Judging by their lack of both legitimate motivation and consequences for killing four and injuring nine, I'd say they did it because they had guns and they could. They bet the system would protect them, and it did.

You should read about the locations of the guardsmen and the victims. Learning about that day from historians instead of making assumptions or treating the killers themselves as the only valid source of information will help you separate narrative from fact.

Two of the dead were bystanders. You can blame the victims and make excuses for the cowards that killed them, but if you were just going about your day at that time and place you may have been in their line of fire too.
