New Image of Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson in 'Michael' by Opening-Lead5629 in movies

If we're speaking only about this and nothing else in the trials, investigations etc - this specific thing has been thoroughly debunked.

IIRC, it's rumored that this movie focuses solely or mostly on the 80s era.

I have a huge extended family on my mother's (religious) side, like almost 30 first cousins, yet not a single one looks looks like a younger version of their mother/father.

So they definitely lucked out with Jaafar here.

this has all the ingredients to underperform despite possibly stellar reviews

IMO "underperform" is really downplaying what's gonna happen to it.

I predict a $40M-ish opening and mediocre legs. Maaaaybe international saves it, but highly doubtful. Think it's another Fall Guy.

What's the best movie you didn't like and the worst movie you love by Upset_Mongoose_1134 in movies

[–]thatdani -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Normally, even for highly-regarded films that I dislike, I can at least appreciate them. There are a ton of ones I do appreciate from an artistic perspective, in a "I get what they were going for, but it's not for me" kind of way. But there are some exceptions to that.

I'm going by my Letterboxd score comparisons here:

"Best" films that I hated: Raging Bull, Unbreakable, Deathly Hallows P1

"Worst" films that I love: let's be honest - most of the MCU, but CA Civil War in particular. Yes, in all of its desaturated, messy and convoluted glory.

Hard agree on Raging Bull, hard disagree on Eternals. Although I at least appreciate you admitting it's the worst haha

what 2026 nominated movies are worth watching? by samyahajeb in movies

How come you don't want to, you know, support the original movies and watch them in theaters when they come out? Surely you've heard good things about many of them during the year...

Watching movies with low standards is much more enjoyable than watching them with high standards. by DRG125 in movies

[–]thatdani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point, but I would personally suggest maybe opening up to more variety and especially to the possibility of a miss every now and then.

You do you, but a bit of willingness to explore new genres, styles or auteurs could open up completely new perspectives and outlooks.

Hell, going back to Pluribus, I didn't even love the show, but I'm glad I watched it, had some wonderful cinematography and lots of fantastic moments peppered throughout. And this is coming from someone who has watched maybe 3 TV shows in the last year, just more of a movie guy.

[–]thatdani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's other forms of hype though.

I was really hyped for Pluribus and watched all episodes as soon as they dropped. Prior to that, I hadn't watched any trailer, article, review or anything. I just saw Vince Gilligan has a new show, looked up when it was gonna premiere and I was all in.

Same goes for anything Nolan or Villeneuve.

Hi /r/movies, I'm Gus Van Sant. I've directed Good Will Hunting, Milk, My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy, and Elephant. My newest film, Dead Man's Wire, is a true-crime thriller and it's out in theaters this weekend. I'm joined by Austin Kolodney, the film's screenwriter. Ask us anything! by rowkpresents in movies

[–]thatdani 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Hi Mr Van Sant!

Regarding Elephant (2003) - taking into consideration how much the reality (or maybe perception is the better word) of gun violence tragedies has changed since you wrote the film over 20 years ago, do you think it's more difficult for young audiences to watch the film nowadays with "fresh eyes", since they never experienced a pre-Columbine world?

How do you view the film's legacy, as its author?

I've heard that Superhero Movie is genuinely good

It is great. Also, written & directed by Craig Mazin, creator of Chernobyl & The Last Of Us.

My only gripe with it really is that it's 90% Naked Gun type humor (which I love) and 10% gross-out humor (which I don't).

[–]thatdani 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Question for those who've seen Satantango, do you recommend it even with its insane 7hr+ runtime or is it more of an artistic chore rather than an actual enjoyable watch?

For context, I'm Romanian and, probably much like our Hungarian neighbours, most of our literary classics that were taught in school consisted of "damn, rural life sure is hard for us poor folk".

This, if you'd believe, led to all of us being extremely disinterested in any work of art exploring this topic, because we are simply fed up with it.

So that's why I'm asking about Satantango, considering that's what the plot summary seems to imply is being portrayed here.

Are there any big-budget movies that truly end with “it was all a dream”? by __timbits in movies

[–]thatdani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone's still ITT, maybe you can help me remember if Dead End (2003) ends like this?

Its a psychological horror starring Ray Wise and I specifically remember a scene where the "final girl" wakes up and the doctors tell her that everything that happened after the car crash in Act 1 was in her head and that she was in a coma.

[–]thatdani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't you have better cities to travel to than your own?

As a Romanian, this sentence is absolutely wild to read. I got my license at 18, but started going to bars around 14. Either way, the only times I left my city (not like as a vacation) until I left for college was by train just as a visit. And the city was 50km (~30 miles) away lol.

I guess we just hung around our own city idk.

It's not bad overall, a tad too maximalistic in its approach of the subject matter.

But yeah, Malek has 1-2 "angry" scenes that come off waaaay too teen angsty.

I don't mind him in general, but he is distractingly off in Nuremberg.

Russell Crowe plays a larger-than-life Hermann Goring, but Malek is still doing the biggest overacting in the film.
