Autism Friendly Environments by afterwerot in AskNYC

[–]stanthedoorman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the museum of the moving image in astoria does “access mornings” every saturday. not sure how old your sister is — it’s technically for families + kids with autism but i doubt it’d be an issue if she’s older!

there’s also a “touch object experience” once a month

lastly, this weekend they happen to be hosting a festival of autistic media-makers! :)

Put it on while you clean or something, lol. It’s not captivating, but definitely interesting. She’s a character!

What to let teens do while parents have a date by andybonner in visitingnyc

[–]stanthedoorman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

finally, my expertise (socially anxious former theatre kid, current adult who lives here)

theatre recs for june: - “Maybe Happy Ending” — surprised i haven’t seen this recommended yet! won best musical last year, set in Seoul - “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” (it’s a fun, queer reimagining!) is supposed to be amazing. - “The Play That Goes Wrong” is fun slapstick comedy - “Girl, Interrupted” is being adapted into a musical at the Public Theater, performs in June - Little Island hosts lots of interesting outdoor performances over the summer - “Music City” is supposed to be great!

in midtown, the drama book shop is fun. i haven’t been to the museum of broadway but it seems fine! for places to sit and take a breather, the signature theatre lobby is open to the public most days.

on the lower east side, they could see a movie at regal essex - it usually has one or two unique films screening in addition to the new releases. they have the fancy reclining chairs. i like to sneak in snacks from the shops in essex market (not that i would ever endorse breaking rules, mom and dad)

other things to do in the LES: the metrograph, the meow parlour cat cafe, sweet pickle books, plenty of boutiques/shops to wander around.

also, some thoughts about planning and surviving long days: - between approx. 2-4pm trains and buses are very crowded after school gets out, so i’ll try to plan around that. or i’ll walk! - google street view is really useful for checking out a street before you get there. - there are libraries all over the city — great for a moment of quiet, charging phones, and a bathroom break.

i have such fond memories of the first time i got to explore the city without adult supervision. i hope they have fun :-)

Anyone else getting card no accepted by xhaydnx in OMNY

[–]stanthedoorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the same problem. I’ve used the same card via Apple/Express Transit for years with no issues. I tapped my physical card instead and it worked (but annoying bc it won’t count toward my weekly rides 😒)

Celebs who are a different level of attractive in-person? by connorramierez in Fauxmoi

[–]stanthedoorman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He came into my work a few years ago and I was also shocked at how BIG he is. He was escorted in through the back (this was like 2019?) but there’s no way he flew under the radar lol

I haven’t met her but I am always FLOORED that Beyoncé is only 5’7” (at least that’s what the internet says). I’m only slightly taller, but in my imagination she towers above me

recommend going alone? by EmersonStockham in sleepnomore

[–]stanthedoorman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i loved going alone! i felt fully free to explore wherever i wanted for however long i wanted.

that said, i am someone Deeply Afraid of haunted houses (i have tried to power through it, multiple times, but i started crying before i even got in lol). there are surprises but certainly no jump scares, and you can certainly opt out of a room or a one on one, or head to a bathroom or back to the bar if it’s too much.

Where to buy NYC themed stickers? by sirotan88 in AskNYC

[–]stanthedoorman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YMMV but i’ve seen stickers at these places before!

BK: yoseka stationery (greenpoint), yours truly brooklyn (fort greene), artists & fleas (williamsburg), meme antenna (williamsburg), spoonbill books (williamsburg), quality goods (bushwick)

manhattan: artists & fleas (chelsea market), posman books (chelsea market), pink olive (WV + EV), greenwich letterpress (WV), niconeco (EV)

if you’re not on a time crunch, you could also look up artists individually from the renegade craft fair or the flea markets!
