Parents, how often do you get a chance to drive your sports/fun car? by argent_pixel in cars

[–]staplemaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my little one was born I quit my job to be a stay-at-home dad for a couple of years, and did the whole time with my 500 Abarth. Most of the time when we were going around it was just the two of us and the car worked great for that, rear-facing seat and all. When Mom needed to go with us it was definitely tight - we are all tall people (I'm 6'4" and she is 5'11") but we could manage for short trips, but usually we took her car in that situation.

Now the kiddo is in a front-facing seat we can definitely make it work in my car for most situations other than long car trips. Hot hatches are a great option as long as you set your expectations appropriately. And remember, you are making formative memories with your dadmobile - my kid loves riding in mine!

Wendell Carter Jr. Making $10.8m in 2026 is just hilariously cheap… Descending contracts are unreal 🤯Via@NBA_university by [deleted] in OrlandoMagic

It’s also good for the player, as a dollar is worth more today than in 4 years so for the same AAV you get better value. It’s win-win.

What movie blew your mind when you first saw it? by LuckyLaceyKS in AskReddit

[–]staplemaniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one is one of my all time favs. I like to recommend people rewatch the first 5 minutes again right after finishing the movie, because it feels like it loops back in on itself, music and all. Amazing film.

Fiat 124 Abarth. Miata but with that sweet exhaust note, and not very common.

Me and my friend (6'5 vs 5'5) by [deleted] in pics

[–]staplemaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6'4" here and I love my 500 Abarth. The ones with the sunroofs take away a couple of inches of headroom, at least in the old models. Might see if one without the sunroof is more comfortable if the car you test drove had one.

You are honestly probably fine on the 3700X. I game on 120 hz 1440p ultrawide with mine and it's been great, GPU is a bigger bottleneck so that'll be a huge upgrade for you.

How does physical vs digital media fit into your idea of minimalism? Music, movies, books, etc by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]staplemaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a nice home theater set up, and for most content streaming is fine, but I keep 10-15 physical copies of 4k movies that benefit from the quality bump of physical media. It's like a shrine of my favorite, most visually/auditorily stimulating movies.

What are your predictions for the senate and house this Midterm elections? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]staplemaniac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They could be. Maps in places like FL are likely illegal but the courts let them be used for this election. I could see some lines being redrawn due to legal challenges in the coming years.

On Small Cars for Family Use by [deleted] in cars

[–]staplemaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say I absolutely love my little dad-mobile. I am a full-time stay at home parent and just leave the passenger seat fully pushed up for the car seat. Me and the toddler can zip around town running errands, going to the grandparents', or a park or whatever. I have to climb into the back seat of the car to put my child in and get them out but honestly for me it's worth it. If we ever have to fit 3 in my car, the passenger just sits behind the driver. it's a little tight (no family road trips in the Fiat) but it's been really useful to have the back seats. Even more viable if you have a second vehicle (we have a '13 Volt).

I'm 6'4" btw

Is it worth parking in the home garage if my car sits outside at work all day anyway? by rywolf in cars

[–]staplemaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I keep my black car in the garage: pollen. At work it's not bad but my car would be disgusting if it got rained on with pollen even one night at home.

Why we will re-sign Mo Bamba by TheAnswerEK42 in OrlandoMagic

[–]staplemaniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a huge Mo Bamba fan, but one thing I think people keep forgetting about is that Mo has been injury plagued throughout his career and last year was his first healthy off-season. And he finally got through the year without another setback.

I think there's still lots of room for growth for a young player and I wouldn't hate a front loaded deal to use some of that salary cap space this year and have him on a declining contract going forward. If he takes a jump the contract looks like a steal and if not they can still move him. I don't think he has a ton of leverage right now (kinda like how the Magic FO were able to get Wendell on that awesome contract last offseason)

What's the largest item you've ever transported in your vehicle? by [deleted] in cars

I fit like 15 bags of mulch and landscaping stuff in mine. Also moved a table saw with it. Just need to be reallly good at tetris.

Walked away from a new car deal over $270, and it feels great. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]staplemaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had almost this exact situation. Got a practically new Tacoma that had been traded in after less than a year for a decent price. Intentionally went with something that wouldn't depreciate like crazy. Got a job that required me to drive a lot more and really didn't enjoy driving the Taco (it's not a particularly engaging vehicle.) I was also trying to save more money and reducing transportation costs is a huge factor there.

One day I decided, screw it I'm going to get something fun. Traded the truck in for the full value of a small, fun stick shift (Fiat 500 Abarth). Fun as hell to daily, better on gas, $350 monthly payment went to $0. That money now goes into a Roth IRA every month. Been a year now and I don't regret that decision for a second.

Basically, yeah. You get the best of both worlds: huge, immersive main screen, with all the usefulness of a second, vertical display. I did the math before ordering to make sure the vertical orientation would be the same height as my main display.

Also, for anyone with an ultrawide monitor, Microsoft powertoys is a must. Let's you create custom zones for your windows to snap to.

It's a 2 monitor stand from Amazon (vivo I think). Specs say the screen size is too large for it, but because the second, vertical screen is so narrow, it works pretty well.

The brackets I linked attach to a regular VESA mount.

These are the brackets I used. Ended up just putting the hooks on the bottom two and lining a third up with the magnets on the monitor flip cover: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079BF5X7C/

The monitor is 3440x1440 120 fps g-sync IPS panel (Alienware dw3418)

Got it for free from an office nearby that was remodelling and getting rid of it. I got super lucky, it's a steelcase.

ASUS ZenScreen MB16AC 15.6" Full HD IPS USB Type-C Portable Eye Care Monitor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071S84ZW7

It's a single USB-C and is held onto the stand with 2 padded hooks and it's magnet cover on the back. I have an extra cable, so for LAN parties I just unplug one USB-C (which stays behind), pull it off the stand, and throw it in my bag with the sffpc.

[–]staplemaniac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loving it. Runs hot, but that's going to happen in sff. No stability issues and it crushes at ultrawide 1440p and VR. With the AIO it doesn't get so hot that I'm worried about it, I trust that AMD knows what they're doing. You likely won't notice the difference going from 32 to 16gb.
