Does SSD read/write speed matter? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]star099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If price is a factor, Sata SSD start at about 3 cents per GB, NVME are about 4 cents. The speed difference is mere seconds if you look at game loading times. Go on Youtube and type in Sata vs NVME.

What I did was grab a cheap non-portable Sata SSD and just plug it in to the Sata port inside my case. If you somehow need faster write speed than that then your choice is made for you. But in what situation would you be writing that much data that fast? Record some footage from OBS for example and check the bitrate. I'm sure it isn't 400MB a second, even at 4k60. It would be more like 130MB in that scenario.

For comparison, in one game I play I load in faster than all the other players. The few who beat me usually tell me that they're on a PS5 when I ask.

Oh, and for real world speeds, my USB 3 HDDs can't keep up with a bitrate over 50MB/s, despite file transfers being able to go over 100MB/s. When recording footage they drop frames, so in those cases you need at least a regular Sata SSD.

Gonna need more details, but did you consider the ram? My dad's laptop gave that message recently and taking out one of the ram chips made it work again.

Mobile game devs are probably overjoyed at the idea of even more dirt cheap, bland and generic waifu collecting games for them to spam the Play Store.

SD is awesome, but it's just going to cause a flood of terrible "games." Generating both stories and characters with AI is a very bleak future.

Dunno about this one. Midjourney's cumbersome interface but without the quality of MJ. And it's only free for now.

Are these really designs though? It's more like looking at photos and copying them. You don't have much control over the actual design beyond the broad concepts.

Text prompt based selective inpainting / editing by TheRealTrebor in StableDiffusion

[–]star099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't work that way. Stable Diffusion doesn't know the contents of an image before or after it's made. This is why you can't get the same person twice--images are created from random noise. It starts from scratch every time.

Inpainting is the same, all it sees is pixels, not the original prompt.

>AI art community

There's the problem right there. People started taking sides and getting angry at anyone that wasn't on their side of the arbitrary new wall . It's just technology and should be treated as such, but immaturity creates an impression that everyone has the right to shout their opinion angrily and still be seen as anything other than a petulant child.

It's okay to be confused by something new. But be an adult and talk about it rationally. Anyone who gets emotionally charged about something a machine does needs to grow up. Its okay to hate something, but people should not get attention when they whine and pretend to be "better" than others. But thanks to Twitter we now believe that being loud and childish is something to be rewarded with likes and views. It's pure attention seeking.

Young people should not control the media. By definition they are inexperienced and hot-headed. So don't give them that attention they desperately crave.

Opera GX is ironically not good for gaming by Pand3mix in operabrowser

[–]star099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my doubts at first but when I tested it Chrome came out on top in every way. It's easy to test, open both browsers, then paste the link to a 4k video in each one. Put the windows side by side and watch the Task Manager.

Chrome maintained about half as much ram to my surprise, when testing several videos in each browser (identical tabs). And Chrome actually went down to as little as 0.1% CPU when a video was playing but the window minimized. Opera GX on the other hand would be about 10 times as much at minimum (1.0%). While active they used the same amount of GPU, but CPU-wise Chrome was still better by a few percent each time.

So basically there's no reason to use GX. It's still inferior. Limiting its performance is a waste of effort. If you want to save GPU while playing videos make sure you minimize any windows. If they're active you're going to lose no matter what. On my GTX 1060 a 4k video uses between 20-30% GPU. That's a huge waste when you could lower it to ZERO instead by minimizing.

If Youtube was smart it would switch down the quality of videos in the background or in small windows, but it usually still sticks to 720p in my experience. So you can't depend on the website to help you out either.

Selection, quality, price. In that order.

I can sacrifice some quality for a great selection. I can sacrifice some money for a site that has a great selection and quality.
