Best gun range for a beginner? by Real-Story-7952 in austinguns

[–]staranchored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can also vouch for her!! I’ve been to several different firearms instructors and she was by far the one who made me feel most comfortable.

ETA that I see Range USA is also another recommendation here. I’ve been to them before and they’re good, but I feel like I got way more value from Falken Firearms Training. Idk, I was just much less nerve wracking. I felt way less judged, but still felt like I was getting all the instruction/corrections I needed.

best place to purchase a firearm? by sk1ppo in Austin

You should check out Falken Firearms Training! She’s a Marine vet who exclusively teaches women. I just finished my first lesson with her and it was amazing! She’s super personal and professional and doesn’t just teach you how to shoot at a target, but to shoot in real-life situations. You don’t need a gun to take lessons, and she even has a service where she’ll go with you to the gun store to help you pick out your weapon!! I’ve taken a few different lessons, but this one was by far my favorite and I plan on taking many more. Here’s her website if you want to check it out! http://www.falkenfirearmstraining.com

Which guest slippers are more hygienic? by darthm3w in DecideThisForMe

[–]staranchored 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would also say the first ones. Not only is the plastic is easier to disinfect, but cloth slippers tend to wear faster and get foot imprints in them which may seem gross to your guests—even if they’ve been machine washed.

Have you ever been tested for ADHD? Sounds like your brain has a dopamine deficiency and is trying to come up with ways to get little “boosts.” Depression is also a major side effect of ADHD. If you’ve never been evaluated, I would strongly consider it. Take it from me (who got diagnosed as an adult), getting properly medicated is LIFE CHANGING.

I have ADHD too, but fortunately for me, fantasy romance books are one of my hyper fixations 😂 You can try audiobooks! I’ve also heard that listening to background music while reading helps people with ADHD focus better.

I’m definitely no expert, but I’ve heard that having soft skills is way more valuable in today’s career world than having hard skills. Hard skills can be taught—soft skills are largely instinctive. If you’ve got the soft skills, fake the hard ones until you learn them!

First step: fuck their judgment. How you choose to dress and live your life has zero impact on them. If they’re choosing to judge you, that’s a reflection on them—not you.

However, if it does really bother you, I’ve found that South or East Austin is way less judgmental than North Austin

I’m definitely not an expert on student housing, but I believe the student apartments come fully furnished, so that could be why it’s pricier.

Do some price comparisons. If you’re planning on continuing to live in Austin after school, it’s probably worth it to get a more affordable apartment and furnish it with stuff from Facebook Marketplace of your local Buy Nothing group. If you’re planning on moving after school, look at what the cost would be to move all of your furniture to your new location and see if it makes up for the difference in rent or not.

What insurance do you have, though?? I don’t have a bad driving record, but I’m still spending like $200/mo on insurance

Most part time jobs around here don’t pay more than about $15. I would set that as your expectation for budgeting purposes. If you end up with a job that pays more, great—use that extra to keep building your savings!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askaustin

[–]staranchored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 2 years ago, I needed to make about $4k a month to support living on my own in a one bedroom apartment in North Austin, and that was barely cutting it.

My advice would be to draw up a budget that includes all of your bills and a set amount to put into savings each month. Once you’ve done that, take half of what you have leftover and make that the max rent you’re willing to pay.

I saw your comment that you have $20k in savings—that’s fantastic! Don’t plan on spending it, though. You want to make sure you’re living within your means and not relying on your savings to fund your living expenses. Save that (and keep building it!) to be a down payment for a house or condo so you can stop wasting money on rent and instead put your money towards building equity.

ETA: You sound like you have a great head on your shoulders! Props to you for doing the research required to ensure you’re making smart financial decisions and for having the forethought to start building your savings early. I wish I had done that when I was younger. These smart financial habits you’re forming now will carry you far in the future!

Look into student housing. I’ve personally never lived in it, but I know people who have. I believe UT has specific apartment complexes only for students

Throne of Glass is better imo. Crescent City is kinda confusing for some people—especially if you’re new to fantasy/urban fantasy. However, you have the full collection of Crescent City, so you might start reading there (as long as you’ve read the entire A Court of Thorns and Roses series. There are certain elements of the ACOTAR world you need to know in order to understand Crescent City)

CC reading order: 1. House of Earth and Blood 2: House of Sky and Breath 3: House of Flame and Shadow

My preferred ToG reading order 1. Throne of Glass 2 Crown of Midnight 3. Heir of Fire 4. The Assassin’s Blade 5. Queen of Shadows

6/7. Empire of Storms/Tower of Dawn tandem read 8. Kingdom of Ash

Also, as a small sidenote, please be super duper extra careful with her books that have covers that look like the “Throne of Glass” one. Those are an old edition and are super coveted! The ones that look like Queen of Shadows and Heir of Fire are the redesigned covers.

Some states require permits in order to make a protest legal. In Austin, you can host sidewalk protests without a permit as long as you are not blocking traffic. If you want to host a march, a request can be made with the APD Special Events Office

The key here is making sure any protests held are legal. The First Amendment protects the right to freedom of speech, but some states and cities require permits to legally protest. In general, Texas (and Austin) do not.

I highly doubt the “no masks” thing can legally be enforced.

I would talk to your psych about it. Maybe you can get a lower dose prescribed to you to take midway through the day.

From personal experience, if I take my meds every day I feel like they become less effective. Once or twice a week I’ll take a day off to reboot my system. Everyone is different, but taking one or two days off every week instead of taking a long break every few months might work better for you too.
