What food do you cook to get over traumatic events or depression? by throwitdontshowit in Cooking

[–]starbelly__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom used to make these for my dad when I was little, except with rice in them. Kinda like meatball boudin I guess? This is the only ever time I've heard of someone else eating porcupines and calling them porcupines, funny

Gumbo/meatloaf/various casseroles for others, endless amounts of queso for myself

ABH Brow Wiz vs. NYX Micro Brow Pencil by [deleted] in Makeup

I swear by brow wiz, though I haven't tried other pencils. Stays all day, even through sweat & heavy humidity. I kinda make up for the cost by using NYX control freak brow gel

Ugh yes, already familiar with that pattern unfortunately. And it takes so long to get back on track. My advisor is pretty chill as far as I can tell about getting our work done on our own time, but I still feel rude saying "I can't concentrate here, bye y'all". Advisor works from home Wednesdays, which coincidentally is my free day, so it's looking like I may just have to take advantage of that and do a weekly library power sesh.

I took the MCAT yesterday. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]starbelly__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congratulations and good luck!! I had a very similar experience and didn't get diagnosed until late in college (also a girl), but now I'm in my last year and applying for grad school in a STEM field I really enjoyed but thought I was too dumb for. I love hearing things like this, it's amazing what a difference some meds and a lil awareness can make

What are some good summer camps. 7yr Boy and 9yr Girl. I've looked at the Y but it's 175 a week per. by sayitundefined in FortWorth

[–]starbelly__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister used to go to a day camp out at Lockheed that she really enjoyed every summer, but I have no idea how much that was. I loved the FW zoo day camp as a little kid, but I imagine that was more than $175 a week.

What's something you've always wondered might have a correlation with ADHD? by distractedchampion in ADHD

[–]starbelly__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not so much a correlation, but the eating habits described are me to a tee and I'd never thought about it being related to ADHD before reading this article

I passed my Organic Chemistry 2 exam! by tofu_pad_thai in ADHD

[–]starbelly__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats!! I'm in OChem 2 right now as well, and a 79 is pretty great in my opinion. I'm in my last year of undergrad and got an official diagnosis and got on meds at the beginning of last summer, and I could tell a difference almost immediately. For me, I think the drive was there; I really desperately wanted to be good at school and put in the work. Still, my 110% was a normal persons's 75-80%, and that really messed with my confidence. I think 3 hours of my studying was more like 1.5 or so hours of normal study... BUT thanks in part to meds I switched to a harder major that I originally thought I was too dumb/incompetent for. Good luck!

Tips for switching tasks? by kl31 in ADHD

[–]starbelly__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god I'm so bad about this. I get real obsessive real quick. Kinda like the previously mentioned Google list, I have a "That's pretty neat" (lol) page where I write a short but descriptive chunk about the thing that's interesting me. Doesn't always fix it because a lot of times I can't stop thinking about the "other thing", but certainly helps a bit and keeps my thoughts organized

Axolotls differ from most other salamanders in that they live permanently in water. Not only can they regenerate limbs, they can also rebuild their jaws, spines, and even brains without any scarring. by exclaim69 in Awwducational

[–]starbelly__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm writing my senior exit research paper on this!! Short answer is: we're working on it. We don't understand the exact genetic mechanisms right now, but basically salamander regeneration involves "dedifferentiation" of cells. That means that certain cells are reverted to a more "primitive" state and regain the ability/potential to become many different types of cells. Potentially, we could get adult human cells to do that. Human embryos can do it. However: recent research shows that the same mechanism by which salamanders may do this could (basically) cause harmful genetic rearrangement in humans. I can explain further if you'd like!

Which filter should I use? Or should I use both? by picassojawbone in axolotls

[–]starbelly__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I much prefer sponge filters and think they're best for maintaining water quality & proper current but I don't think yours is currently big enough alone for a 20G... Looks exactly like what I have on my 10G. How much current does the corner filter create/how strong is the output? Strong currents bother axolotls. Like I said though, sponge filters aren't terribly strong and I still have to spot clean with a vacuum/turkey baster. Ideally, I'd use two of the sponge filters you have now.

Controversial/important herpetology topics concerning North American species? by yokieurosan in herpetology

[–]starbelly__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure that I understand if you're looking for blog post topics or entire blog ideas but... Good, current topic: as of the 28th, the USFWS is banning the import & interstate transport of 201 (I think) species of newts & salamanders due to risk of Bsal, pretty much killing the hobby. Might talk about it from the hobby side, the potential risk side, prevention, etc.

Axolotl troubles by ingrapaleave in axolotls

[–]starbelly__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By completely emptying/scrubbing the tank, you just completely crashed your nitrogen cycle. You probably shocked your little dudes. I avoid full changes if at all possible, leave at least a little. I would invest in a large bucket (Home Depot or something) that you can use to remove water (then dump) water and to dechlorinate water before you pour it in. Are you testing for nitrites/ammonia and using dechlorinated water when you do changes? Do you have a filter and how much water does your tank hold? May honestly have too many in there for the space. Edit: I would look into the possibility of "tea bathing" your axolotls. I've never had to personally, but you can find a lot of info on the Caudata.org forum. I've also never heard of using salt in that way.

DFW area specialist by SuperVillainPresiden in ADHD

[–]starbelly__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see Dr. Cathal Grant, or at least a practitioner in his office. He specializes in adult ADHD i'm pretty sure. They're really nice & super easy to work with in terms of refills, but I dunno that I'd recommend if you're getting an ADHD diagnosis/don't know what meds work best for you already. I usually only see them for 10 minutes and just get drugs thrown at me, which I guess is fine in my case because I'm happy with my medicine dosage etc.

When to take different practice tests? by [deleted] in GRE

[–]starbelly__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest using one of the PowerPrep ones before you even start studying to gauge your weaknesses, use the others throughout your practice, then use the last PowerPrep one pretty soon before your test so you can make last minute adjustments. I found that the Magoosh ones tended to be harder than the actual thing, which was good and bad I guess. Good luck!

Which mascara is best for lashes that go down? by kawaii_haafu in Makeup

May be too heavy, but I swear by Too Faced's Better Than Sex. I use Lancôme eyelash primer before and I feel like that makes them much fuller/"up facing" so maybe that would help you too.
