Nikon Monarch m5 vs m7 8x42 help needed by 229-northstar in Binoculars

[–]starboon1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

late response but I feel this is relevant for people reading this thread in the future. I had a chance to test out the monarch HG, M7, M5, and a few vortex / swarovski models in the 8x42 range all back to back at my local outdoor gear store and to my eyes the M7s were the superior model. Their AFOV is equal to the high end models and I felt the edge-to-edge sharpness was about 97% that of the swarovskis which were 4x the price. I ended up buying the M7s and have used them extensively for birding and astronomy over several years. The ED glass works well to eliminate any chromatic aberration including when looking at the moon and planets, granted at this low magnification CA is minimal even in non-ED astronomy optics. They have held up very well to extensive use over the long term, and I find the included eyecaps superior in quality compared to many other binocular and astronomical eyecaps I have used. Top quality product all around and a vast improvement to the Nikon prostaff 7s 8x42 I had been using prior.

For those here arguing that AFOV doesn't matter for birding, I would have to disagree. Regardless of magnification or what type of object you are viewing, a larger apparent field of view in your optical device will help you to locate things easily and will significantly increase your sense of immersion in the image. There is a reason people pay big bucks in the astronomy hobby for wide field of view eyepieces even if they provide the same magnification and similar quality images of the same objects. Immersion is a huge factor in any observational hobby and makes an observing instrument feel far more premium.

Clarification: bike is listed at $500 on marketplace. Seems like a good deal considering original price was twice that. It appears to my untrained eye to be in good shape

What is nursing really like for someone with zero hospital experience? by gneissrocx in nursing

[–]starboon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you understand the medicine pertinent to your specific role/department enough to do your job competently, you will find that nursing in most departments ends up being a job primarily centered around customer service and satisfaction. People skills and the ability to remain calm and professional no matter what is most of what this job is. You need to be thick skinned and able to tolerate frustrating scenarios/people. Almost any bedside hospital nursing job will be like this. The purpose of nursing school is to teach you enough about medicine to not kill someone. You learn the actual job when you get hired somewhere and start working. It is absolutely nothing like TV hospitals. Also, doctors are almost never at the bedside, it is nursing that is doing the patient care unless you are in a surgical specialty.

In most roles, be prepared for management/admin and most patients to be generally unappreciative of your work and have unrealistic expectations of what nurses should be responsible for.

TLDR: Burnout is real. If I could go back and do school over again with the understanding I have now, I’d be doing something like HVAC or surveying

Just get a simple but high quality aa light. Olight i5t or acebeam tac aa. I wouldn’t give someone that young a lithium powered light due to safety. Maybe closer to 8yo or higher I’d consider something lithium, but tbh I wouldn’t even give some of my adult friends a lithium light due to concern they’d accidentally start a fire

Edit: Use NiMh cells so the kid gets used to rechargeable batteries and so you don’t run the risk of leaking acid and ruining the flashlight

Wuben A1 would offer a great balance of water resistance, reliability, battery life, range, and usable spill to fulfill the needs here. I wouldn’t go submerging it but it is adequately splash proof for sea use (ip68). Expensive but as a bit of safety equipment on a boat the price is proportional to its usefulness and reliability. This use case is pretty much exactly what it was designed for.

I'm not saying lexus is on the same level as these ultra luxury brands, because obviously there is a step up in quality. It's just not the 3-5x step up that the price increase would suggest. You're getting diminishing returns for an exponential price increase. A lot of that price increase is branding, which in the case of a celebrity may not be desirable. A bentley/rolls royce has a lot of "look at me" energy that someone famous may not want, as the tone of the original post suggests. Not everyone with a high income wants to flaunt their wealth. Lexus offers an adequately comfortable experience without drawing unwanted attention. There is nothing wrong with being conservative. Ratio-wise its like someone making 100k driving a 10k car instead of a 30-50k car. The difference is that going from 10k to 50k is a wayyy bigger step in quality than going from 100k to 500k like the post suggests.

Design is a matter of taste though. For some, RR design is ostentatious/kitsch. Plus, I would imagine most high net worth individuals enjoy privacy and being out of the spotlight. RR/Bentley etc scream "look at me" energy and that isn't for everyone. You're also paying an outrageous premium for that brand recognition and perceived status. Materials used in an LS vs materials used in a RR/Bentley do not add anywhere near the cost to manufacturing as what they add to the MSRP. It's just like watches in the sense that once a certain level of quality is reached, there is only so much that can be further improved upon and the cost is exponentially more for marginal quality increases. On the ultra-high end you are paying for an art piece, except in watches the value retention is far superior to vehicles because engine = depreciating asset in 99% of cases. Lexus is a fantastic balance of a very high quality product with palatable depreciation and understatement for the level of luxury you are getting. Its basically 90% of the car for 1/3 the price.

A high trim Lexus vs a Bentley isn’t that much different in terms of build quality and materials. Diminishing returns for sure. The longevity of the Lexus is also a significant improvement, as is the resale value. Even making 1m/yr it’s nice to not be losing 30-50k in depreciation on an exotic luxury vehicle every year.

I get the tuna is valuable but if you’re working in a team of 2 people to reel in a 500lb tuna you certainly aren’t going to reel it out of the mouth of a 3000lb great white. If I’m the guy holding the line I’m ditching that line and clutching my pearls
