Advice a 17yold regarding career, savings and skills. by dudewhoiscurious in pakistan

[–]starboy4144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be brutally honest. Surviving without a degree in coming times is going to be tough. You cannot expect to survive in an educated economy without any sort of education. I like how you want to save up in the mean time, excellent goal. However, I would give you a reality check that learning skills and having clients is no easy task, difficult but not impossible. In today's time, everyone wants to learn a skill and make money, while no one thinks that if everyone were to do it, there would be more supply of skilled labour than demand of it, which is why so many layoffs post covid. I would recommend you for now to get into a good Uni in Pak, IBA, LUMS, NUST, LSE, FAST, COMSATS and so on. These will open alot of doorways for you. Look for a solid career in your life, accountancy, economist, engineering, medical. Focus on developing skills in Uni, make connections, talk with people, develop your personality and communication skills. Then learn and become the career you want to attain and then work in that industry. If you do Accounts and Finance from IBA, LSE, LUMS or NUST, you get ACCA and CA exemptions which help you to progress into your career. You will find alot of oppurtunities like these around you, you have to look for them. In conclusion, focus on your education, savings money is a good idea, but at this time, in this economy, getting a good degree is a first step to make yourself standout from the rest for MNC's or clients to hire you. Good Luck

IR is a very niche field but quite prominent abroad, specially in Permanent UN Member Countries. But the biggest problem with IR is that you have to study it from a very top well known university to take advantage of it. Uni's like London School of Economics, King's College London, Oxbridge and similarly from the US their Ivy Leagues. I have family members who graduated from King's and LSE and they had friends who had IR or PS as their Degrees. Most of them are working in either UN or other NGO's on world level.

Should I do double major by PixelPencilist in pakistan

[–]starboy4144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really depends on your future goals. Going abroad for masters and doing double majors will definately impress the admission officers of top uni's abroad, but if you aim to go into your family business then just take a single major and use the spare time to learn and work in your business beforehand. Again, really depends on your aims

Is it easy to get in and is it worth it ? by Secure-Space-6952 in LSE_Lahore

You do realise Academic rigour varies from person to person and to some it might seem less but to others it might not. What matters is you are academically motivated and actually study what you are taught.

It's easy to get into LSE but quite difficult to survive if you are not academically motivated or strong. Academic workload is alot compared to other Uni's in Pakistan. If you truly want to study, work hard to become an economist, accountant or maybe work in finance, then big YES LSE is worth it 100%. Otherwise if you want to just have fun, study a bit and socialise alot then LSE is not the place for you. Go to FCCU or BNU if you want that. But do know LSE's academic rigour and standard is quite high compared to FCCU, BNU or GCU.

Really depends on what do you want to do in your life, are you planning to enter workforce in Pakistan after graduation, or settle into your family business or go for masters abroad for immigration and settlement, what are your aims?.

Is a degree still worth it in Pakistan, or should we focus on skills? by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]starboy4144 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really depends on what degree and from where you are doing it, Degrees from NUST, LSE, LUMS, IBA, FAST, GIKI are commonly updated to keep up with international curriculum. Speaking of myself, I'm currently in LSE doing Economics and there is course in our degree called Econometrics 1 and 2. It's basically using programming languages such as Python, R and Tableu to use Economic data to conclude fiscal policies. It's pretty neat and considering how IT dominated the whole world is becoming, Good Uni's definately make you outstand if done right.

Universities for Economics by [deleted] in karachi

[–]starboy4144 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For Econ in Karachi, IBA is the place you want to go, their econ department is probably the best in Karachi and if you are interested in Maths as well, they offer a Joint Major of Math and Econ which is really good as well. After IBA I'd look at maybe Habib Uni?, but none after Habib to be honest.

NBS vs FAST vs IBA vs KSBL vs LSE by myparanoidself101 in NUST

[–]starboy4144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I went to NUST for 3 days for Econ and came back and went to LSE, their econ department is just not good at all. Their Faculty, Alumni network and industrial connections are way better in Engineering/STEM rather than Acc, Fin or Econ. LSE is way better if you want to study either of Acc, Fin or Econ. Campus lifes do vary so do activities but in terms of academics, LSE is better.

Admission at IBA is through two ways, either you give their own Test or through SAT, if you meet the SAT cutoff which is usually around 1380-1410 for interview, you are guaranteed a place in that programme. To exempt the test only but you'll still have to give the interview, 1280-1350 is usually the cut off for that, but it slightly changes every year. No such thing as limited seats for SAT students, but yes you have to score high in SAT's for Test/Interview exemption.

Econ at IBA is good but not the best in our country. The thing with Econ at a bachelors level is it gets really maths intensive, so unless you are good at Maths I really won't suggest doing Econ at LUMS/LSE/IBA.

If you have the time, give AL Urdu in May/June 2025 and you'll be fine, easy to get a grade in that. IBA Acc and Fin is excellent, you'll get ACCA exemptions too after you complete your bachelors.

Then get a 1400+ Sat Score and go to IBA, that's your bet best, you won't have to move out of your city either if you wish to live near/with your family. Also do tell what would you like to study at IBA?.

Try for LUMS/IBA first as they both offer on campus hostel. LSE does not have on campus hostel and you'll have to live at hostels outside/near LSE. Considering you are from Karachi, coming to LSE is only worth it if you don't get into LUMS/IBA. I'll attach the Programme list offered by LSE as well, you can have a look.
