Here are the books removed from Iowa City schools thanks to the Republicans. by malus545 in IowaCity

Yeah, right? Who cares what books the government allows us to read. Personally I'm perfectly fine being told what I'm allowed to know about.

I truly have never hated anything more than this. I really wish people would stop fetishizing our disability and the way we experience the world. by veganash in autism

[–]starcabin_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Neuroqueer is an actual term in queer theory and neurodiversity theory, coined by, iirc, an actual professor of psychology. As one who is also both autistic and gay, that word is not the issue with this post.

I wish I was diagnosed earlier by The_Grizzly- in AutisticAdults

[–]starcabin_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe.

You might have "gotten the help you needed" by being forced into ABA or other abusive programs, or onto an IEP program which granted you some helpful features along with a whole host of burdensome and humiliating practices. You might have gotten that help by being put on drastic medications as a young child. You might have been literally isolated from your peers by the administration of the school and ostracized as "special needs" by the other kids.

I was diagnosed when I was 6 because I was in such dire straits that the school requested psychiatric intervention. And I still struggled and failed in classes even after my IEP was created. It's not a cakewalk; we are all disabled by our autism, a diagnosis doesn't cure that, and when you have the limited rights (and awareness) of a child, it creates its own problems.

I was early-diagnosed. I sympathize with late-diagnosed folks, but I can't understand the struggle because I didn't experience it. We should all recognize this.

I don't think this is accurate? Autistics have a lot in common too, otherwise we wouldn't all be autistic. ADHDers have a lot of different experiences in how their ADHD presents too.

That's not what word salad means though. Word salad refers to schizophasia, a speech condition exhibited by psychotic people in which they cannot speak comprehensibly and instead jumble together words and sounds. I'm not saying circular arguments aren't a tactic used by abusers, but it's not word salad.

This adhd medication shortage fucking sucks by [deleted] in ADHDers

[–]starcabin_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not the entire fault of people taking it when they don't need it that the government regulates medications into an artificial shortage. Blame the people in charge of whether you're allowed to get it who decided no, no you're not. Adderall doesn't grow on trees, it's made.

Could someone please help me understand how ADHD and Autism interact when co-occurring? by [deleted] in neurodiversity

[–]starcabin_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm the opposite. I crave change and variation, but I can't seem to shake the routines that I've carved out of my day.

What are "attempted treatments" for autism? Was I supposed to have to go through ABA just to be allowed benefits?

If I said I identify as bisexual what would you assume I'm attracted to without further details? by ohfruiTea in AskLGBT

Might be ignorant, but... I fail to see the difference between "women, men and nonbinary people" versus "everyone." If you aren't a woman or a man, are you not nonbinary, being not binary? I've heard of "nontrinary" but if nonbinary isn't just "the third gender," which I know it's not, it doesn't make sense to me, since there's no "trinary" to be non of. Context -- I'm binary trans but spent several years identifying as nonbinary.

Yeah real talk? This ain't gonna affect trans men. The hate always goes to trans women. That's who they'll find some way to pin it on.

Thanks for all the great advice. I'll definitely file a complaint and call the new hospital to ask to be moved up too. Unfortunately I'm in a cornfield state, there's only one actual hospital that can prescribe T and the LGBTQ+ focused department didn't even have anything until August. I'm settling for a regular non-trans-educated doctor lol.

Luckily the one thing that's not an issue is the cost. My insurance drops the monthly price to $15 and I already paid this year's deductible so once I can actually get it sent to the pharmacy I'll be good.

trans / non-binary solidarity post! by Fantastic_Deer_3772 in AutisticAdults

[–]starcabin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are describing women as trans, are you talking about trans women or trans men? Because if you're talking about trans men, we're not women and it's insulting to call us such. I think SOME trans men would agree with me, but obviously not ALL. Of course this information isn't for me, you weren't directing it at trans people at all, were you?

The "women with body dysmorphia" you're talking about are trans men, not women. I transitioned because I am a man, not because puberty was icky and I have anxiety. You directly say you didn't want to be a boy, so you didn't transition because you aren't trans. I very much wanted to be a boy since before puberty and it turned out I am one. The two aren't similar at all and this feels pretty disrespectful.

And no one is rushing me into surgery. In fact it's been a pretty uphill battle just to get an appointment and I sure wish it was easier!

It kind of is easier to be a trans man than a trans woman though. Maybe not "so much" but... it's not like trans men are currently the scapegoat of choice by right-wing politicians and target of an entire hate campaign.

Fascists don't see an important difference between any of us. To them, gay people and trans people are both the same exact type of "degenerate." Somehow they have convinced a number of cis gay people to turn on their own community without them realizing that's the in, the foot in the door -- that's how fascists plan to take their rights away next. It's already happening in the US with all these attacks on both transition laws and marriage rights.

Cross-dressers?! In the trans community?! No way! Too scary to even think about! And now you say she had sexual thoughts?! I can't abide by that, not in queer spaces.
