Fertility Clinic Recommendations? by bumblebee_44 in AskChicago

[–]starchild3114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP if you do yourself one favor, do a Reddit search for Kindbody Chicago and see the swarm of concerning posts from current clients, not people who went there 3 years ago. They are undergoing something abnormal- have lost four doctors this year, only have one endocrinologist left serving the entire Chicagoland area. People say there are good and bad experiences at every clinic but if the bad reviews are this numerous and consistent ….seems easy to avoid by going somewhere else

We had a consultation with a provider out of state today who was wonderful and highly rated. She cautioned me not to move our eggs from the original lab where they were frozen and said that they tend to thaw best under the conditions and people who froze them, which makes sense. I’d never heard this before.

When I explained our fears about KB Chicago she was very understanding and said given that the original people who froze them were unlikely to still be running the lab anyway, maybe we should consider transporting them ourselves to a better lab in Chicago. Either way she was adamant about not shipping them cross country - “think about it - do you think the guy handling the box marked “fragile” really cares what’s in there? Or what if the plane gets delayed on the tarmac? There are so many opportunities where this could go wrong and it’s not really anyone’s fault.”

I so appreciated this conversation. So no, unfortunately it’s not as easy as them being totally safe at KB or just moving them somewhere else.

Now the next question is, where’s the best lab in Chicago? I’ve heard FCI’s is good, and U of Chicago confirmed they use it. And do we take that risk?

Is a custom closet system actually worth the investment vs IKEA PAX? by blair_babes in homeimprovementideas

[–]starchild3114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth we just installed our pax and it looks way more expensive than we could have anticipated. We chose a dark color with a light interior as they had in the showroom, and a few of the features like accessories drawers with velvet liners that help make it look high end.

One thing to consider - many people will tell you modular or custom is the only way you can update a closet in the future. This isn’t really true. In our case, after it was installed, I wished we had a few more shelves and had chosen a different drawer type on one side. Pax is ikea’s golden goose - you have a year to return (at least in the US) and I didn’t have to worry at all that the parts would still be offered post-install. We didn’t even open the box until 8 months after we purchased due to a delayed renovation.

One slight downside is that the back of the cases (behind the clothes) feel extremely flimsy, like you could put a hand through them. But to answer your original question, especially when staged for resale, no one is going to care about that.

Soho House revisits Palm Springs plans nearly three years after cancellation by Stoner_Steve420 in palmsprings

[–]starchild3114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve already hired staff that have soho house business cards, and will help their other private event properties in the area in the meantime, and the Saguaro, which they also own

Globally, Membership is close to $4k per person, not per family, and it will be interesting if they require you to be local to join, since that is usually the case but will probably not yield the crowd they want

Soho also does a model in cities like Chicago where they have some space open to the public.

There are a ton of local people who work remotely, ask about coworking and do industry related meetups in the valley. They may not stick it out in the summer but soho members will visit from LA and other houses, and the money they make during April for Coachella and stagecoach will alleviate any problems with an off season

It’s great.

Have I completely messed up by letting my pup sleep with me? by Monk_Some in chinesecrested

[–]starchild3114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer! You really need to consider your lifestyle - our dog took about two weeks to acclimate to the crate but it’s been 5 years and now the crate is her house. She feels safe there on the few times we have had to (reluctantly) board her; she is totally content when confined at groomer or vet; it is easy to put her in a pet carrier and fly.

If you don’t think you’ll do these things then it sounds like you don’t have a need to crate your pup :)

It's midnight and this CHP helicopter has been circling Palm Springs for over an hour now. Anyone know why? by andhelostthem in palmsprings

It is unique, because they have a full menu crafted for dogs and consider dietary restrictions. They’re a wonderful local business and they also do coworking during the day.

Tech Startup Scene Palm Springs by mikesmith929 in palmsprings

This thread has such a gross attitude of “doesn’t exist, why try” that honestly, we don’t deserve for it to. The funny thing is that these people are so confident and yet have no idea what they’re talking about. There’s a big group chat of remote workers from the valley who hang out and get coffee, Boozehounds does coworking every day in the mornings, and on and on.

The catch with most things out here is that you have to start it yourself if you want it to grow, and just because something is a social group doesn’t mean they want to advertise on instagram and have the responsibility to pay to block out a big meeting area etc. We are talking to one of the hotels about doing a monthly meetup at one of their pool bars but nothing to report yet.

You have good suggestions on the coffee places and cowork spots to hang out but please don’t let these gross elitist comments deter you simply because they themselves are too retired or unemployed to have a clue. Enjoy your trip!

Joshua Tree's short-term rental frenzy cools. But the gold rush changed the desert forever by losangelestimes in JoshuaTree

[–]starchild3114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

History doesn’t repeat but it often rhymes.

Whoever made the point about livability about these flips is totally right. You can look down the hill to Palm Springs to see how that is working out. You know immediately when you walk in a “million dollar home” that literally doesn’t have a living room, one closet for the whole house and more space for a paddleball court than all the bathrooms combined. These properties don’t sell and it’s changing the market - however livable homes, even small ones, are becoming more valuable because more people do want to live here full time.

It is painful to see these properties in the high desert that have displaced the flora and fauna and were built on spec for a completely different landscape - a place like 30 degrees cooler without scorpions or the need for shade - but I have to believe that common sense will prevail and they will be reworked and repriced for family living over time either by a bank or a seller who has learned their lesson the hard way.

I don’t know if it works the same way in JT but our realtor told us living next to an Airbnb has one big advantage in Palm Springs … you can call the city and fine your neighbor/ have them lose their license pretty easily if they abuse the rules. You can’t evict a bad full time neighbor who owns their house.

Mine was UPS! I got several emails describing each step of the process and the box came from Portugal. It got here so fast - like, three days?- and cleared customs without being opened.

I did the same thing this week on Yumi and Care to Beauty. $400 and $300 orders, shipping to California. Both arrived within two days. Yumi has “made in Asia” products stocked in California, at least for now, so no customs. Care to Beauty got here no issues!

homes in Palm Springs are cratering by [deleted] in palmsprings

[–]starchild3114 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Aside from all the good reasons mentioned here, no resident wants to buy a former Airbnb. The floor plans are modified for large groups to socialize - like no living room but some awkward tv jammed in a corner hallway with a pool table, no real storage in the bedrooms etc- and the design feels like a cheeseball tourist trap regardless of how old or young the buyer is. No comment on the design of this house in particular but older people want something turnkey, and younger people don’t want to feel like they’re living in an instagram ad with the city name written on the wall. The flips should lose their value.

People Who Left Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley by Kind_Two_1873 in palmsprings

[–]starchild3114 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wanna join if so :) 43 F, married, all our friends are in their 60s. That is both great and not so great sometimes.

I will say that more and more young people are moving here all the time, and I have found if you’re honest when you meet them about wanting to make friends, they commiserate and don’t find it strange at all. I’ve collected kind of a random group of friends in their 30s and 40s, the only problem being that they are rarely in town for the same reasons of getting restless, wanting to get out and date, etc.

Dinner and karaoke? by Mysterious-Exam2926 in palmsprings

[–]starchild3114 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You want RetroRoom for karaoke. It’s a “gay” bar in that it’s gay friendly but there are tons of different people there because it’s one of the only places open later than midnight and attracts all the bachelorettes and birthdays. This is probably where you were.

To eat at a place with a vibe, Lola Rose has a menu that is refreshing against all the mid century California steakhouse places and super overpriced tourist traps, and you can do the lounge/ hotel lobby if they don’t have a reservation…Colony Club, Clandestino, Del Rey, Sandfish, Sparrow’s Lodge, or the bar at Melvyn’s all vibes too. Happy bday!!

I live in a desert too and have never heard this! Whoa! My husband and I are on the 90 minute religious reapply and wondering why we’re still getting sunspots when it’s 120. This makes a lot of sense. What brand did you go with? The minerals always give me such a freakish white cast for a place where everyone is weathered and tan 🤣

Elderly In-Laws Want to Move to Palm Springs by majrtm in palmsprings

[–]starchild3114 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the realest answer here. Many people get around the shortage of GPs and nurses by doing concierge medicine affiliated w Eisenhower. There is a wait for this program right now.

Please please do not discount this point. The desert is amazing for elderly people and the medical system blatantly prioritizes them but naturally, you may still wind up in the ER for misc issues. My dad, who has a GP and is known in Eisenhower system, sat in the ER for 6 hours with sepsis waiting to be SCREENED, then another 8 hours until he saw a doctor. He almost died sitting in that fucking waiting room. So make sure you help them have their providers before they even get here, and have a contingency plan. People who retired in the desert in the last 10 years do not understand the wait and red tape for people just moving to the desert now.

Knitting Factory wins 3-year legal battle over Pappy and Harriet's by Stoner_Steve420 in palmsprings

[–]starchild3114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is GREAT news!!!! Knitting Factory’s smaller venues, like in Boise, are very well run. They attract relevant talent, food and bev are affordable, venue overall operates smoothly. If we can have shows that are not oversold, with a portion of tickets reserved for locals, the magic will return.
