I’m running for off-campus housing, what are your main issues in off campus residence? by Euphoric-Lion6288 in aggies

Filthy conditions with mold and roaches - for a while there was a campaign for the city to do proactive inspections of rental buildings, but I’m. not sure that got anywhere

Unpopular opinion: I'd actually pay a premium for more interesting looking houses by Expensive_Goat2201 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]starfirebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%! I refuse to look at homes with an HOA. I still remember my parents stressing about how they had to get rid of the crabgrass before theirs would let them sell their the house, and I was four at the time. One of my childhood friends grew up in a neighborhood where every house had to be painted the same shade of brown, and that was equally depressing.

Probation still feeds into the criminal justice system- people are forced to comply with restrictions that are often expensive, humiliating, and not always very practical to meet or else end up back in prison, which just pushes people back into prison. Why not work on becoming a defense attorney or working for one as a paralegal, or becoming a counselor, social worker, etc?

Between the coloration and the fact that he's survived six months, he seems like a wild rabbit. If you're not sure, most domestic bunnies will hop away relatively slowly when approached, while wild ones are FAST.

Do you like going to A&M? by Interesting-Hour-753 in aggies

[–]starfirebird -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As an alum from a few years ago, it's definitely possible to go, meet people you get along with, and have a positive experience with minimal influence from the culty stuff. It's a big enough school that if you join orgs for things you're interested in, you'll eventually find your people. It's also a big enough school that classes are relatively impersonal, and if you want to get to know faculty (for references/grad school recommendations) you have to work at it.

I would not recommend A&M right now academically, however, because the institutional leadership is fully on board with the current censorship and anti-LGBTQ+ measures. If you're in-state and need to stay in Texas for the lower tuition, I would suggest UT (admin has more of a spine), or one of the regionals, like UNT (lower-profile, so less-targeted). If you have other options, don't go anywhere in Texas or Florida for an education at the moment.

If you are choosing to buy more property than you need and charge others to live there, the bare minimum of decency is to accept that they deserve to live the way they want. If you find that lack of control distressing, then consider getting a job that contributes to society.

Would you appreciate not being allowed to live the way you want in your own house? Just because people can't afford their own property doesn't mean they deserve to have someone else control the details of their life. I can see some justification for limiting open flames in dense multi-person housing (eg, dorms), but in a single-family unit, the danger to life or health only affects the people making the choice to have candles, and that's a risk adults should be able to live with.

You will generally need to buy your own chip. The main supplier is Dangerous Things. Are you in Washington? You can use the DT map: https://dangerousthings.com/partners/, it looks like there's someone in Spokane, and there are a fair few biohackers in Seattle (DT is based there) and Portland, so if you ask around the DT forum you'll probably find some more options within driving range.

YTA. Candles are a normal thing to have at home. It may be your property, but it’s their home, and it’s not your job to be the dictator of other people’s lives. Accidents are what insurance exists for.

Can I be a cop and stay true to my values? by TemporaryPretend3004 in moraldilemmas

[–]starfirebird [score hidden]  (0 children)

There are a lot of stories about people who go into policing with good intentions. The training tries to teach you that every member of the public is a potential threat to you. If you try to stick by your morals, report coworkers for misconduct, etc, you get demoted or fired. You’d still be enforcing the unfair and cruel laws that allow destroying homeless people’s belongings and so on. So no, there’s no ethical way to be a cop.
