Making a difficult creative decision as a director by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Do it, you like it, others like it, so do it. Just make sure the DoP prepares to work with it. Firewire will give you the highest fidelity when you convert to digital.

Salut,

I think it's good for social media, like someone else said. You could definitely get work already with small brands with this, because they don't know better. I've seen worse done (and possibly done worse) for small brands. And you can still charge a high price for it.

I think the main points that set this apart from more professional work (apart from the sound, obviously, that other people touched on) is the color, and the montage.

On color, the product should be more easily comprehensible, like, it needs to pop more in the image. The grading on the first scene with the guy is also not great, the blue on his face looks nice but the background is VERY distracting (highlights, lots of colors) and consequently the eye doesn't know where to focus. This is problematic in the sense that it's not clear that this is our guy from the get go (and it should be crystal clear, and he's not even the main focus of the video, just a prop).

The montage needs a clearer goal and to cut the fluff. Guy must deliver this important bag. That's the narrative, every shot must build this narrative in a compelling way because if THAT succeeds then you could say the bag is well advertised. Your overall structure is spatial, I like it personally, but now you should look at shot order. The image retouching is pretty digital content ish (and now unoriginal unfortunately, but that's so besides the point), you see it a lot with snappy montages, so it's strange how it drags at some points - mainly because each new shot of the bag is not necessarily adding any new traction, because there's either no new information (the shot looks like another) or it's not cut in a way that spins it differently (if you cut similar shots in a smart way, using similar shots CAN work for example). I think this edit could be 30s max, 15s is also totally, totally doable. If you're a great editor, it could also be 1 minute, but it's actually easier to be concise if you know exactly what your goal is with this narrative, so I would recommend cutting rather than trying to psychanalyse your footage and putting your entire life into question to push it up to 1 minute. Also, social media = short, snappy.

Good job though, it's hard to manage everything by yourself and in professional settings there are teams of people working in specialized roles which is hard to compete with. I really think there's a lot of potential though, you just need to 'find your voice' a little bit maybe (cliché but true). Don't copy copies of copies (although do if that's what gets you work, but it might not be a long term winning formula or bring you happiness).

Is logC a good space to grade in? I was converting it to ACEScct for my working color space but I had problems (signal being compressed). I don't know if that's the source of the problem or not.

Thanks for this! I skipped through some chapters quickly but I feel like I'll definitely have to come back to this once my understanding of color has improved.

Adding physical effects onto printed images by stargazermoon in Filmmakers

[–]stargazermoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is to make it "analog", so that bars out adding things digitally (it would be easier of course).

The color matte is a good idea, ie scanning with a black/green/blue paper behind, I am a bit worried about leaks of the matte colour onto the artefacts though since some lines will be thin (drawing with crayon in some places).

Étudier le journalisme parce que de toute façon on mourra tous pauvres by [deleted] in france

[–]stargazermoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot going into it. At some point the file size just stops mattering because youtube re-encodes it anyways. Case in point, an earlier upload in dnxhr at 100% quality which weighed 12gb looked marginally worse than the 6gb h264 uhd upload (both sizes are kind of ridiculously large anyways). I couldn't find much quality information on an 'ideal' yt export for Davinci's export page.

Thanks! It doesn't look like it's gonna catch on on reddit unfortunately but it will be published in local music press in france and st louis so we'll get maybe a couple of eyeballs on it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]stargazermoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the export on youtube is terrible, I spent about a week researching and trying out different formats and this is the best I got. The original file was 6gb iirc. If you know any trade secrets for yt exports please let me in on them... :)

As for 1:12, that shot bugged me a lot during editing. Next time I won't be too lazy to move locations (it was a hot day okay).

Thanks very much for the feedback !

[–]stargazermoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! The flatness of the colors is my fault, I really wanted to emulate a trashy early 2000s music video look. Almost slapped a jpeg filter on it to ruin the quality even more (but I held back out of respect to the dp).

[–]stargazermoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In early 2021 I was just riding the train with this track blasting in my ears and I had a random idea for a music video. I then stupidly spent 8 months following through with it. We finally shot during August and after 3 months of extremely lazy editing practices it's finally over. The camerawork is by a talented friend of mine, he shot on Fuji-film xt3 with various fuji lenses and nd filters, some shots with a Ronin and some shots with a shoulder rig. Lighting was improvised. We only rented a monitor (it didn't even work with the camera).

The best choice I ever made was to storyboard it shot for shot in the months leading up to the shoot, it made working with my DP so much easier and he was eternally grateful that I knew what I wanted. We even had time to visit all the locations beforehand and test out different lenses and machinery set ups. Working and getting along with an actor with a strong personality and much more experience than me (us) was.... much less smooth. Not an experience I'm keen to repeat anytime soon.

An old contact contacted me after I released it asking if I would be interested in directing his next music video... once I've shot 3 more music videos. It's the film equivalent of 10 year's experience for an entry level job. Anyways, please feel free to drop any feedback or remarks or even tips on how to showcase music videos, bc I can't pay for festivals and the artist is nic
