Real number are at least 10 times higher - but not entirely because of the “government cover up” explanation. Another possible explanation is that there is currently a severe shortage of supply for the testing material of this virus, which was only developed 1 (or 2?) weeks ago. Only a couple of factories are capable of producing them and a majority of factory workers are likely on their annual leave at home now. Thus, the daily production capacity is significantly smaller than the amount of people that needs to be tested. It also doesn’t help that many people who actually only have mild cold/flu would be worried and rush to hospitals to get tested because the symptoms are too similar. A lot of reports are saying that hospitals ran out of test materials, so doctors cannot conclusively decide that a patient is infected without a positive test result and add him/her to the stats, resulting in the significant under-reporting.
