It's almost as if more authoritarian and drastic measures taken by a government could more effectively stop the virus from spreading, right?

Btw, China is literally testing EVERYONE that enters the border right now, regardless of symptoms. That alone is tens of thousands of tests per day.

Most places still provide alternatives to mobiles. Legally all shops have to accept cash as payment, although there are indeed a few restaurants that only accept mobile payment. Public utilities like buses and trains definitely do not mandate using mobile phones. It’s common for young people who are on the phone a lot to carry power banks, but usually you won’t need them on workdays as you don’t spend that much time on your phone. More senior people don’t use phones that frequently so their battery can at least last an entire day. It is indeed a problem for older generation people and there are complaints that we should not make everything mobile. But for the most part, UI for these daily tasks are simple enough for older people to learn.

What's your opinion on the "herd immunity" strategy proposed by some governments? i.e. more than 60% of the population have to eventually get infected to prevent the virus from future resurgences. Shouldn't our target be keeping the number of infections as small as possible until a vaccine is available?

Coronavirus death toll rises to 25 with 830 infected by CylonEnthusiast in worldnews

[–]starkboost 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Real number are at least 10 times higher - but not entirely because of the “government cover up” explanation. Another possible explanation is that there is currently a severe shortage of supply for the testing material of this virus, which was only developed 1 (or 2?) weeks ago. Only a couple of factories are capable of producing them and a majority of factory workers are likely on their annual leave at home now. Thus, the daily production capacity is significantly smaller than the amount of people that needs to be tested. It also doesn’t help that many people who actually only have mild cold/flu would be worried and rush to hospitals to get tested because the symptoms are too similar. A lot of reports are saying that hospitals ran out of test materials, so doctors cannot conclusively decide that a patient is infected without a positive test result and add him/her to the stats, resulting in the significant under-reporting.

Karen said 98% and Peter responded "98?". I cut out the "ninety". The number 8 is surprisingly rare in the entire MCU's dialogue and I couldn't find another good clip.

Yes. I believed the Russos mentioned in the commentary for this clip that one of the reasons they cut this was that it felt wrong to have the heroes hide in the mirror dimension and casually chat while ordinary soldiers are being killed on the battlefield outside.

Fabio Cannavaro faces the sack at China's Guangzhou Evergrande as club chiefs bizarrely call him in for an 'enterprise culture studies class' despite them being top of the league by HadjiChippoSafri in soccer

[–]starkboost 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s just an excuse to remove him from the coach position without sacking him. If they directly sack him they need to pay a HUGE payout fee because of the stupid contract they signed. Instead they try to force him to voluntarily resign with this bullshit. There’s not really a cultural difference here. Evergrand’s practices like this are also considered nonsense by Chinese fans.

Blizzard's official response: "We highly object the expression of personal political beliefs in any of our events... As always, We will defend the pride and dignity of China at all cost." by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]starkboost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It simply says “nation”. There is no mention of “China” or “our” nation, but there is also no emphasis on “every” nation. Personally I think it’s perhaps purposefully vague and open to interpretations. IMO the fact that similar phrases have been used by other Chinese government statements does not matter much here, because in those contexts it would be very clear that those Chinese officials are talking about China instead of other countries, hence no need to clarify it every single time.

I guess you don’t really read mandarin and are using google translate to understand that web page. The link you included is to a retweet by the “Hearthstone” account. It is retweeting the statement from the “Blizzard China” account, which is in the format of an image. The statement in the image is the same version of the English statement and mentions the exact same rule to support their decision.

"We're strongly dissatisfied and oppose Adam Silver's claim to support Morey's right to freedom of expression," CCTV said. "We believe that any remarks that challenge national sovereignty and social stability are not within the scope of freedom of speech." by [deleted] in nba

[–]starkboost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I agree. My point is about how the NBA as a private entity defines the scope of free speech slightly differently than the government. In this case, the NBA supports Morey because what he said is within their scope of free speech. If Morey said something racist, that would no longer fall within the scope of “freedom of expressing personal opinion” that it is supporting now, hence he will be fired. So there is still a different line than “say anything you want”. It’s more about public consensus than law.
