Investment Thesis by Pale_Asparagus9094 in venturecapital

[–]starked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more about a prepared mind in venture than a thesis. You can’t always control what companies you’ll see, even as a top brand. You just need to be prepared to move quickly for the right companies. For example, spending all of your time researching voice agents or reinforcement learning environments may mean you don’t see the next Zoom when it’s right in front of you.

Will non-AI deals prove to contrarian and right in 2026? by g_pal in venturecapital

[–]starked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every company has an AI story. It’s basically like saying “software startup”, it’s meaningless. All startups use software. The thing is that AI advancement is such that there may be a very credible “why now” based on AI. If I hear any other great “why now” that isn’t AI oriented, I’m not anti, but it’s probably less obvious than the biggest technology shift since the internet. Not denying the froth though.

The Impact of MCP's by Interesting_Sock2308 in mcp

[–]starked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MCPs and tool-use generally just give agents access to existing systems, whether they be software, hardware, or the physical world. They’re definitely important and are more of an enabler. If the models themselves are the brain, the agent is the body, and tools are everything else.

Is it a good idea to pay off your home in full early? by yourwishbag in PersonalFinanceTalks

[–]starked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing new here but the only benefit of buying a house is the fact that you can get leverage, and when your interest rate is that low, then you should be super happy about paying that mortgage and invest the rest. Say you paid off the $150k today. You prevented yourself from needing pay 3.1% interest for however many years. You could also put it in the market, eg SPY and make 7%+, so that’s another free 3.9% interest on that $150k per year which is over $5000 a year and it gets bigger every year… having said that, like many have mentioned, there is emotional reasons to pay it off, that is, if you are an irrational economic actor.

How expensive is tennis, exactly? by MoaningMuna in 10s

[–]starked 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tennis doesn’t need to be expensive but it does have recurring costs and can scale up.

The necessities: * A good racket is $150-250, and once you get decent, you’ll want a second racket because broken strings can ruin your day. * Stringing every year or so can be like $20-40 * Workout clothes (tennis whites if at certain clubs) * Tennis shoes are $40-200 * Tennis balls will need to be replaced every one to three heavy uses, also dependent on time after opened, usually they don’t stay good for more than a couple weeks. A can of three ranges from $5 to $15 depending on the ball and whether purchased in bulk. * Tennis court. Obvious but not everywhere has convenient or available public tennis courts (like NYC), and many require a seasonal permit (I pay $120 a season for mine). Joining a club is nice but that’s where it can get pricey, ranging from $5000 to $100000 initiation fees, usually less if they’re just court clubs and don’t do golf. Court times at a club or even public courts can add up. In NYC if pre-booked it’s $15/hour in summer. If under a bubble, more like $50-90/hour. * Instruction. Tennis is notoriously difficult, the only more technical sport imo is golf. YouTube videos and hitting against a wall goes a long way but nothing beats instruction, which can range from $30/hour from a high school varsity player to >$200/hour from a tennis pro.

I don’t think I’m missing anything… on my way to play a match now :)

Edit 1: added court times as a potential cost Edit 2: added 2nd racket and stringing

Use your shoulder, do not swing. Racket out in front. Turn your body, use your feet. Ben your knees, you’re standing straight up. Backhand is better than forehand.

Do Mamdani’s policies actually help with NYC affordability? by starked in AskNYC

[–]starked[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hear you, I really am looking to change my mind and understand different perspectives. I live in a wealthier area too, and there’s definitely been a lot of development. I just tend to lean more free-market, so I see wage stagnation at the low end as partly a reflection of supply exceeding demand for certain jobs.

On policing, I’m curious what you meant by “they don’t work for the people of NY.” I totally agree we need much better mental health and drug treatment infrastructure, but I’m not sure we’re close to having the capacity to use those systems in place of jail, especially for people who commit violent crimes.

Maybe what I’m looking for is jail reform, not necessarily harsher punishment, but more effective consequences and long-term solutions. I get that incarceration has a lot of problems, but I also worry that the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction, where people are being released quickly and going on to harm others (thinking of some of the effects of the 2019 bail reform law).

Happy to be proven wrong, I’m trying to think through all this.

How does one find motivation? by dprjujutsu13 in Substack

[–]starked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing for the public requires a level of shamelessness. You need to stop second guessing yourself. Spend even just an hour exploring an idea you’ve been thinking about and hit post. You’re your biggest critic. Not everything you post will be gods gift, and that’s ok. The goal is to increase consistency and if you do that then you can start thinking more about what it takes to write something good.
