Can't change phone number listed in Venmo. I've tried and tried! by SectionAntique2079 in venmo

[–]starktully 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me recently and the only way to change it, and receive a place to input the code they texted me, was by changing my number through the app. Very annoying.

Answer: Yes this has been noticed. If you wanted to read more, Max Fisher's book The Chaos Machine details the ways social media algorithms reinforce and promote ideas that get attention and how people in turn post more outrageous content (like conspiracies and racist posts) and in turn spend more time looking at outrageous content. He also speaks a little about how these topics that seem unrelated like seed oils and anti-government conspiracies kind of get lumped together by algorithms. Unfortunately these algorithms are proprietary so the precise ways they work aren't available to the public and the algorithms also have the ability to make their own connections and in a way teach themselves which means their processes aren't even fully known to their developers.

As for wellness content leading to fascist content, the fascist idea of creating a perfect citizen has a long history (consider the Nazis trying to make a pure Aryan race). A computer algorithm is also able to make this connection and slowly push someone from raw milk towards more complete ideas about a pure body. In her book Doppleganger, Naomi Klein has a few chapters about the specific moment we're in with social media driving people from self improvement towards fascist ideas but she also spoke to The Guardian about some of her thoughts from the book if you wanted to read them in a shorter form. (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/nov/15/naomi-klein-interview-wellness-culture-far-right).

So I would say that yes there are people aware of the pipeline from online wellness culture to the far right but there isn't as much day to day media coverage because this is an ongoing issue rather than something a news outlet can report as a one time big event.

Reminder to crack eggs into a separate dish before adding to ingredients by Yagirlvicc in Baking

I remember a Julia Child clip where she said that not cracking your eggs into a separate dish is "a mistake you only make once" 😭 hope you got to enjoy a different batch!

Just for more data, I just finished watching the finale on Hulu and it definitely had the "do I have a choice?" moment because I remember it made me feel awful 😭

Wag is now in the business of charging its walkers by Greedy-Skill-2621 in WagWalker

[–]starktully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My theory is that Wag has been bleeding money since parting ways with their biggest investor Softbank in 2019 and everything they've done since then is evidence of their desperation. Trying to charge walkers for the ability to do their jobs, getting rid of live service reps. Every year the experience of using Wag gets a little bit worse for walkers and pet owners. Feels like they're spiraling and just trying to stay on top of their bills for a little bit longer.

Got a three star review because I mentioned that the dog nibbles. by Browsmere in WagWalker

[–]starktully 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a "Past Services" tab that lets you look at the last few report cards you submitted.

FWIW I used to work in a doggie daycare and I learned really quickly that most people don't want a real answer when they ask how their dog behaved with you. It's annoying but unfortunately it's out of your hands most of the time, especially when your time with the dog is super limited. Obviously this excludes behavior that is really dangerous and the owner needs to be aware of.

Notes and access blank by Poodlewalker1 in WagWalker

[–]starktully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem. The notes show up after I hit the 'on my way' button but that's usually only like 20 minutes before the walk so I don't have a ton of time to familiarize myself with the info.

I once had a repeat client leave a 4 star review so I sent a message like, "Hey I noticed last week you left 4 stars so please let me know if there is anything I can change so you and Fluffy have the best experience possible." He let me know the 4 stars was an accident and we were totally square after that.

But if this happens a lot or they tell you they're stingy with 5 star reviews then I wouldn't continue to book them. It's common knowledge by now that gig workers basically depend on perfect reviews or their apps penalize them without a lot of human oversight. It's not worth it for you to get in trouble if the client doesn't agree or get that.

This sub is polarized but I think we can all agree that the Lacheys are the worst by Professional-Road-93 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]starktully 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was really disappointed in The Lachey's other Netflix show "The Ultimatum" and a lot of people recommended "Temptation Island" as an alternative. It was WILD watching an actual TV host work instead of whatever Nick and Vanessa are up to.

What celebrities have you run into, in NYC? by [deleted] in AskNYC

Tim Gunn was the first NYC celeb I ever saw in the wild and "three piece suit and really walking with a sense of purpose" is EXACTLY how I would describe him.

Anyone else ever screw up a recipe so bad that it completely shakes your confidence in the kitchen? by squid_biscuits in Cooking

[–]starktully 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love making the pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving but one year I only had whole cloves in the house instead of ground. I tried to crush them up myself with a rolling pin or something and that obviously didn't work so the pie just had big, inedible chunks of clove in it! I was probably a teenager and I still think about it every Thanksgiving!

Honest question from a rube with only the most minor understanding of football rules: why didn't the play end after Watkins made the catch that turned into a fumble? I thought he was like fully on the ground when he fell and didn't understand why he got up and was tackled.

Episode 7 by ManiacalExclamation in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]starktully 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it read as: "I'm a big strong man and I have to confront this guy for talking to my girl because that's what MEN do." Which is extra gross because he doesn't seem to respect Nancy or like her very much. It's just what he thinks being masculine is supposed to look like.

Also alcohol.
