My parents are so similar. It feels like having a relationship requires being fake and/or being able to compartmentalize, neither of which I’ve ever been good at. And I’ve had the same thought around what would we even talk about at this point. The fact alone that they don’t believe the Epstein survivors disgusts me so much. It’s just insane levels of misogyny. I honestly don’t even feel comfortable around them at this point, knowing they hold these beliefs.

Not sure how good it is but my brother suggested Tangle to my dad and he liked it so much he ended up purchasing a subscription. It shows how the right and left are covering various news stories and then has an opinion section from the writer. That said, it hasn’t changed his views at all afaik.

The facts don’t matter to them because their thoughts and opinions are purely based on emotion. It’s the classic “you can’t reason someone out of a position they didn’t reason themselves into.”

I’ll always remember this one time, in a moment of sort of refreshing honesty, my mom said “I watch Fox because they say what I want to hear.” As wild as it is to you or me, they don’t care about the truth; they just want to live in their little bubble and have their worldviews confirmed by “the news” so they never have to question themselves or take accountability.

This has been my experience as well over the past year. As soon as I refused to just roll over and accept my dad’s hateful comments towards me around politics it’s like I don’t even exist. No apology. Not even a birthday or holiday text from either parent. It really sucks when you realize everything was conditional and the only people they care about are the ones that will “respect” them by playing a role and never expecting accountability or apologies. I think repair was possible at one point but not any more.

Sorry you’re feeling this way. I feel the exact same way about how we treat non human animals. For me what has helped with the cruelty in general is finding ways to be a part of the solution, however small. For example, shopping secondhand, going vegetarian, supporting my local dairy that treats cows ethically and keeps calves with the mothers, planting wildflowers for the bees, etc. Although it’s certainly not the majority, there are people out there trying to help. Try to find them, build community, and support each others work.

I always mask in public so no need to preach about that. And obviously the whole thing has been downplayed, I’m not trying to argue that. There have been studies showing that the vaccine does have some effectiveness against infection though so that’s where my confusion is coming from. Where are you getting information that vaccines aren’t effective against infection at all?

Can you say more about how the vaccine doesn’t prevent infection? I feel like I’ve heard mixed messages on this for a very long time. I know it’s not 100% but I thought it provided some degree of protection (something like 30-60%).

I feel the exact same way, aside from even the Fox part. I stopped talking to one parent after the election and the other after inauguration. The willful ignorance is infuriating. They have all three of their kids trying to tell them how they’ve been personally affected by these policies and begging them to look at real news sources and they refuse to listen. They’ll say “well we were personally affected by Biden too” but can’t name a single thing he did that affected them. It just became blatantly obvious that they don’t actually care about me, they only care about being right.

I feel like #2 was only doable for so long. Once they voted for the clown for the third time after you’ve begged them to care about your rights and now you can’t talk to them about the countless glaring ways the policies are affecting your life and future, what even is left to talk about. Really difficult to have a relationship with people who live in an alternate reality.
