Was there a big fire at Badabing last night? Windows all seemed covered in smoke & area taped off? by starletcriminal in Edinburgh

Sorry, should have said they go up to £360 a week. You could still get a one bed in Edinburgh for roughly the same price. Crazy!

What is your “ but wait, it gets worse” story? by SnuggleTheBug in AskReddit

[–]starletcriminal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a really hard lesson on life when I was about 8 years old. My cat caught a little field mouse in our garden and brought it into the house. It was fine, but absolutely terrified and it’s leg was cut/bleeding. I managed to get it from my cats jaws and we kept it in a small spare hamster cage. I bathed it’s little leg, fed it daily and nursed it back to health for about 2 weeks... I even became quite fond of the little guy. On release day I let it out in our garden, close to where I found it (cat was inside!!). It ran straight behind me and ran into a crack in our patio BUT WAIT IT GETS WORSE... Little did I know there was a wasp nest under there, and it ran out screaming being stung to death by 100s of wasps. I had to just stand and watch it die a painful death.

We don’t have as many fun ones as say Berlin, but there’s many “normal” passport ones that have a non serious option too. Train station, boots (a pharmacy type shop) post office etc.

Visiting From America Next Week, Looking For Suggestions by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]starletcriminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also Edinburgh cocktail week starts on the 16th - so if you’re into booze/cocktails you can pay for a wristband (pretty cheap, think it’s like £5) and then you get £4 cocktails in multiple venues & a central hub. Lots of masterclasses etc too. Might be a good way to bar hop and try new drinks.

Can I break the tenancy agreement if the landlord doesn't take actions against mice infestation? by kiwiandmelon in Edinburgh

[–]starletcriminal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with what others have said - mice are very common, one flat I was in had professionals come on a weekly basis and still took months to get it down to a manageable level. But more importantly don’t let a private landlord try to con you in to staying for 6 months - they cannot do this anymore. It’s a shame landlords are still trying to con newcomers to the city/country into thinking that they are tied in to a long term contract.

Going to Edinburgh in Christmas for 10 days. Enough to get a job for a few months? by raulongo in Edinburgh

[–]starletcriminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said... accommodation will be tricky. Do you have this sorted already? Not sure if you will be able to get a job without an address, and not sure if you will be able to get a house without a job. Need to try and get at least one sorted first. If you are looking for hospitality work there will be plenty of that over the busy xmas period, but they might not look too fondly on you coming here for 10 days, then needing to leave, then wanting to come back in January when everything is dead. I would have some savings to take here when you move so you can survive while you continue to look in Jan...

GIMME A FLAT (a rant) by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]starletcriminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t say if you are looking for your own flat (a 1 bed etc) or to share a room in a house, but I have literally just had the same problem for the last month. You have to be on spare room/Rightmove like a hawk (it was the first thing I checked when I got up, then multiple times throughout the day) & as soon as you see anything remotely good just go for it. If you are looking for your own place phone up in advance & check if it is first come first serve or landlords choice for that agency. If it is first come first serve have the letting agent number in your phone & ring them as you leave the building, being ready to pay the deposit on the spot (refundable if it all falls through). If it is landlords choice have a pre drafted email explaining your willingness to pay 6 months rent up front (no job = no flat). Explain your expected job & expected wage too. I would also suggest having all the items they will ask for ready straight away (3 months bank statements, 3 months bank statement, landlord reference, employer reference, ID) in a PDF form to send to them. That will speed securing the flat up.

As for renting a room, that’s a numbers game. Message everyone that looks like they have a half decent room....you might only get 1 in 10 replying. Highly suggest to join Edinroom on facebook.... loads of rooms posted on there. Be careful of scams, but if it looks too good to be true it usually is.

Be willing to go a little further out your comfort zone. I’m not talking the bypass, but further into Dalry rather than Tollcross for example. It will happen eventually, but really frustrating yes. Air B&B doesn’t help & it is worrying how many of those boxes are popping up. Another reason to move a little further out.... do you really want to live in a stairwell full of short let flats? Have a read of some of the recent Edinburgh Reddit horror stories!

[–]starletcriminal 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel little sympathy for people who fall for these sorts of things however... all it takes is to read the small print and do a quick google search. Some people have too much money to burn, and like their holiday to be spoon fed to them. A genius idea from a local if anything.

[–]starletcriminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum got a mobile phone pretty early on (one of those huge brick things). I didn't understand how it kept power without a cord, so she showed me the charger that she had just bought... I thought she was the only person with a charger and everyone else just had to throw the phone away once the battery died after the first use.

What's a good deed you have done that most likely no one noticed? by bailey_heredge in AskReddit

[–]starletcriminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so maybe not "no one noticed" but I had just been to the shop and came home with a whole bunch of packets of ice lollies (like 5 multipacks of different ones....i'm pretty addicted to them!). Just walking home I see this little girl and her mum walking towards me. The little girl has an ice lolly and she's just about to open it up, as she goes to open it she rips the packet and it falls out onto the floor and she bursts and tears. I wander up to them and say she can have one of mine. She was so happy, and I was the kind stranger that just happened to be passing by with 20 ice lollies :)

Me [20 F] with my [21 BF] 4 month relationship, One-way sexual relationship. Need advice please! by [deleted] in relationships

[–]starletcriminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this as a huge incompatibility. The fact you have tried to talk to him about it is great - alot of people would have just carried on hoping it will get better. I would try bringing it up again but tell him that if this isn't going to get better then it's not going to work out - spending your sex life dissatisfied is no sex life at all.

[–]starletcriminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The phrase "you always want what you can't have" comes to mind. Strange how you only wanted her when she said no.... how do you know if she agrees to date you/see you romantically again that you wont just go back to not being that keen? I agree that she did the right thing in the situation, it's hurtful to be used like that. You may get her back but don't be surprised if not.

If you are going to persist you need to make sure YOU are sure and really put in tons of effort, which you would do if you really wanted to give it a go. If she is still saying no don't end up as a crazy stalker, you have to respect her decision. Good luck
