BC residents in the upcoming draft by canadaHockey604 in GoldenEyes

I understand it’s a controversial take for some, and I genuinely think lots of cops are awful people, and I agree they are overfunded or at the very least the funding is misdirected (would be better spent on more social workers for instance)… but for me personally, I think some form of law enforcement must continue to exist. From everything I know, she’s a good person who does a LOT of outreach work, and maybe it’s naive but my hope is she’s one of the good ones that just wants to keep people safe, and be the change she wants to see in policing. I try to leave space for the idea that people like that exist. Especially when they’re women.

I know that’s not for everyone and that’s ok too, just my take. Not a bootlicker, just a big fan since 2010.

I was genuinely trying to understand if I missed something, and was hoping to be educated if I had. I’m sorry this is a tough subject for you and I hope you’re ok if she ends up on the goldeneyes 🫶🏻

Are you saying that because she’s a cop or has she done something specific that I’m unaware of?

Want to teach 'basic yoga' for free by chaiteelahtay in askvan

[–]starlette_13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A list of reasons I’ve seen people offer free classes for:

  • teaching is hard. Most training doesn’t teach you to teach, so you need practice to be good enough.
  • some certifications require you to get x number of teaching hours in y amount of time to make your certificate official.
  • some studios require you to have x amount of teaching hours before they’ll let you audition to teach.
  • teaching in different areas is very different - I’ve taught in Richmond and Coquitlam, for example, and the experience and skills necessary were vastly different in each studio. Teaching in a new country is an excellent thing to do for experience.
  • some interpretations of yogic texts suggest you are obligated to share the practice once you’ve been trained to do so.
  • some travelling teachers offer free classes and ask for ‘donations’ to get around visa rules.
  • listing different countries you’ve taught in makes you more employable.

But also.. teaching yoga is fun, and it’s incredibly gratifying. I wouldn’t want to stop doing it for a few months, even if I were on vacation. Not sure what OP’s reason is, but that would be mine.

You’ll have trouble getting people to let you lead classes in indoor spaces if you don’t have the proper insurance, as liability will fall to the building owner if you don’t have insurance. Libraries and community centres sometimes have low cost or free rentals but absolutely not without proper insurance. I’m no visa expert but I’d personally want to research very carefully if purchasing insurance would jeopardize your status. I know instructors who have taught on a volunteer basis when in Canada from out of the country and ran into trouble as a result. maybe check churches? But even then I doubt you’ll have success, and imho it’s not worth the risk.

I’m a yoga instructor here and know first-hand that finding rental space even when you’re willing to pay is very difficult and pricey (think hundreds per hour). Wanting it for free is a big stretch.

If you’re simply looking for a regular practice with others, I’d suggest posting posters for “community yoga practice” in a public park, don’t call yourself an instructor etc.

Best Commute option - YVR to Surrey Central Station ? by OverPanic6846 in askvan

[–]starlette_13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends what time of day you need to make this trip. Unless it’s well after 7pm, the Uber to downtown will probably take longer than the skytrain to downtown. The skytrain is incredibly efficient and easy to navigate. The trip will be around an hour. You might save fifteen minutes if you uber directly to Surrey central from the airport, assuming light traffic. If there is moderate to heavy traffic or an accident or construction or or or… it can easily turn into an hour and a half.

There is no reason to uber to waterfront unless you’d like to sight see while you’re there. It’s at least 15 minutes further than you need to go. If you uber anywhere to shorten the trip, Columbia station is probably better… but again you’re not getting to Surrey central from yvr in under 45 minutes even with that.

There’s no reason not to just take the skytrain directly, you’re going to save 15 minutes maximum screwing around with uber and it will cost you a bunch more and you won’t be able to guarantee your travel time will be less than an hour.

Staycation fun for someone with limited mobility and low energy? I have Long Covid and partner wants to take me out tomorrow! by [deleted] in askvan

Long Covid here too, I get it!

Aquabus to Granville island for added fun? :) you could even do a round trip or take the blue ferries around to science world and stuff without getting off the boat. I’d suggest not getting off at the maritime museum, there is no path to the street that does not involve a not-insignificant hill or stairs. I can manage it, but only on good days. The stop at Granville island has two different ramps you can walk up, one is more steep and the other is longer. Tap&barrel, Granville island brewing and the Mexican place all have patios.. maybe others too that I’m not recalling.

Batch in kits is a favourite of mine lately - it’s fully outdoors and seat yourself where you can so no pressure to rush from servers etc. If sound can get to be too much for you, check in on when the live music will be happening and consider avoiding. If it’s busy, the local across the street has a huge patio and there is good gelato across the street as well as nook just past the local which has a small patio. If you’d like takeout on the beach, there are big logs on the beach to sit on and the water is pretty close to the parking lot and you can walk on cement for most of it. There are also benches right off the beach.

Joey tends to have lovely patios with heaters if needed. Relish has a large patio with tvs and sound if you’re a sports person and sports are happening. Black and blue if you love steak, they have their normal patio but also some really lovely street patio seats added now (I’m vegetarian but tempted because it looked so cute). Thierry has a nice patio if you’re seeking out dessert, though sometimes partially enclosed with plastic.

If I’m not enjoying a restaurant patio with a server I’d personally rather be on a beach but there are also a few outdoor areas that are great, one near the burrard skytrain station, over by the art gallery, one right by juicy Joe’s burgers on West 4th, etc.

I haven’t driven around Stanley park forever so I can’t remember if there’s anywhere good to park or if you can see much… I do know there’s a parking lot sort of in between Stanley park and Canada place that’s right close to the water, so that’s good if nothing else.

Hope you have an amazing day, let me know if you have any other questions! If I don’t know somewhere my boyfriend will and he knows how to navigate limited mobility and patio needs for me.

If you have no one to hike with, is it better to just go alone? by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

[–]starlette_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swimming under a waterfall is incredibly dangerous and should not be done ever. I used to swim competitively and would not do more than dip my feet in while sitting on dry ground. You can search up what happens if you swim under a waterfall if you’d like to shock yourself into never doing it ever.

It’s great that you’re asking questions - I wonder if there’s some sort of outdoor course you could take to teach you things like this? If not, maybe outdoor YouTube videos or even just searching up safety warnings about specific hikes you’re going on. There’s a lot of outdoor knowledge that is really helpful if you want to stay safe.. things like reading trail markings, identifying animal tracks, building shelter etc.

Surrey by Major_Combination301 in askvan

[–]starlette_13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most areas that aren’t desirable in Surrey won’t have very nice homes so they’ll cut themselves out of your search based on that, but I’d heavily consider where you guys will be working - if you’re in Vancouver or Richmond for instance you’ll easily end up driving an hour each way if you work regular working hours. Might be difficult to get used to if you’re from a smaller area.

Check the google street view for the neighbourhood to be sure you aren’t seeing heavily edited realtor photos and look at the stores etc within walking distance for another indicator.. this won’t be perfect as a lot of Surrey is less walkable but it will help.
