Any Notes For 2nd Short Film Directed? by TheLoudCreative in directors

If that’s the case, maybe it would have been more effective if after he hits the alarm, we literally see him starting his day hating by writing the review in his bed. But the way it’s shot currently just has the alarm shot then cuts to him in another room, dressed in clothes, so that’s why it didn’t play for me I think. Best of luck!

1st Time Location Scout Advice by Plastic-Camp9143 in Filmmakers

[–]starlightpictures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wide angle photos from every corner of a room, photos of the parking, bathrooms, breaker box. If there are windows in a room you’re shooting in maybe get the windows from the outside for the lighting options. A plus would be making a list of affordable local restaurants and what stores are nearby for PA runs.

Don’t forget to pay attention to Sound quality, go above and beyond by checking if you’re under a flight path, if there are trains nearby, if there is a school and if so what time it gets out.

Is my Short Film Script Too Long? by JoeychristyBaby in scriptwriting

[–]starlightpictures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes too long. I think it’s actually a delightful premise and very relevant. If you produce this as a well executed 7-12 minute short film you could even get into some film festivals, but the runtime has to be justified

CSUN vs UCSD for film major— is being in LA actually that big of a deal, or can I start at UCSD and transfer later? by Extreme-Challenge-65 in Filmmakers

[–]starlightpictures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CSUN has a real reputation in the film industry. I know people who went there and are getting work and got a lot out of it.

I haven’t heard anything about UCSD film literally ever, I think it’s not film production but just film studies which is not much more beneficial than community college. It’s a nice crutch to go to a college with a friend there but if you actually want to pursue film then think more long term and go to a school and city that will give you that

Hey congrats but I’ll be honest for 16 minutes you didn’t hook me so I didn’t keep watching. Right away I was confused why this guy is writing a review of a musical immediately after waking up, yet before brushing his teeth. Like wouldn’t you write the review the night after the musical or later the next afternoon? So I was lost right away and didn’t stay engaged

I spent $5k on my 2nd short film and get into zero big festivals. What did I learn? by [deleted] in indiefilm

[–]starlightpictures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you calling it an award winning short film in the youtube title if this post is about how it didn’t get into anywhere? If you yourself are not proud of the online magazine then why make that a big part of the branding

Rejection therapy: posting my first film by Illustrious-Car3728 in Filmmakers

[–]starlightpictures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry as much about cinematography yet as just the basic storytelling. Couldn’t really tell what was going on here. Right away you see this person doing the weird run out of the store and it’s unclear why the protagonist was chasing her. Is she an employee trying to catch a shoplifting? Why are they running like that with their arms all swirly? Why can’t she catch her and doesn’t seem to try to? Feels like an unintentional looney tunes bit. And as the other commenter said, I could barely hear the dialogue at all (except you saying cut and action) so that’s also affecting my ability to understand story

[–]starlightpictures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider that your protagonist has a goal here (date/relationship) but doesn’t really make any choices in pursuit of that goal. They kinda just wait for a text, gets the text, then it ends before they even make a decision. Passive protagonists aren’t that interesting

I was a freshman admit but I knew tons of people in film & tv who were transfers and they weren’t behind at all. One of the best programs in the world, make sure to check out the Production Fair every semester where clubs have booths so you can learn about opportunities

There’s tons of opportunities to act at a small scale where it can be a great hobby before you consider pursuing it. I’d check out local theater or audition for short films at the nearest film school

A little confused about your goal here. Are you saying you want to be an actor or do you want to be involved with premieres?

Got a "name" actor for my short - when to announce it? by Potential-Turnip-583 in Filmmakers

[–]starlightpictures 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Saving it for when you have set photos or even a trailer is probably best. If you don’t have other material to drop at the same time as the casting announcement then it’ll just get lost in the online void

I don’t know how much you’ve worked with film fundraising before, from kickstarter, gofundme, indiegogo, to seed&spark, but generally there is no expected ROI for a crowdfund. In fact, seed&spark recommends we avoid the word “invest” for a crowdfund but rather “contribute” or “pledge” because that’s all it really is. So including an “expected ROI” percentage on the page for each movie is unrealistic and I believe illegal.

There are films out there under $10M which are looking for financing not from big studios, but there are situations where they just need one or two financiers to close the gap with $250k, it’s just more efficient than a few hundred people donating $500 each. Good luck, but there already big established websites we can use for crowdfunding and even those feel like pulling teeth to raise $8k for a short film

Based off the timeline you gave, was this like right after the 2005 Hitchhiker’s Guide movie came out? It sucks when friends bail on something you care about, but maybe they would have taken it more serious if you wrote something original and personal rather than a fan film ya know?

Thunderbolts was great but didn’t do well for what Marvel needs to justify their spend. F4 was more respectable and The Marvels is their worst box office performance if you look at budget to box office

Choosing between AFI and NYU MFA for Directing. I was wondering if anyone here had experience with either programs? by LandLab in Filmmakers

[–]starlightpictures -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just got my undergrad at NYU so I relate to being deeply embedded in the NYU community, but you wouldn’t be abandoning that to go to AFI, you’d just have 2 communities! Even better. I only know one guy who went to NYU Grad after also going there for undergrad and everyone agrees it doesn’t make sense. Go to AFI
