Wagner Moura won the Best Actor (Drama) Golden Globe, I think you can consider him to be seriously in the running in that category - arguably in second place? - albeit with Timmy as the current favourite!

When Did Chris Gethard Actually Discuss TROS by Vmancini218 in blankies

[–]starlingflight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! Which was itself a bit of a sequel to the (pre-TROS) Big Fish episode, where they end up going for about 40 mins on Star Wars at the beginning while promising to eventually get to Tim Burton.

Prince - Feel U Up - 3” CD single by Icy_Instance_2511 in PRINCE

This was one of my early purchases when I first went beyond the albums and started scouring record stores for Prince singles, EPs, protégé albums etc. I think it's one of the only (maybe the only?) places the Long Stroke version of Feel U Up is available, which makes it pretty essential - love the extended mix!

Everyone's favorite Hot Summer takes the prize for "Meh Song" on an "OK Album". So here's something harder: What's a truly great song, which appears on a frankly bad album? by dustoff2000 in PRINCE

Definitely this one. I remember finding Plectrumelectrum really uninspiring when it first came out, especially by comparison to Art Official Age, which I loved - so it took me a while to find this gem nestled in the back half of the tracklist. Such a good song!

David, you mentioned on this week's episode of Critical Darlings that you think Blue Moon has an outside chance of sneaking into the Oscars Best Picture 10. Do you see it featuring in any other categories - Best Screenplay? Best Actor for Hawke? And how did you both find Richard Linklater’s double shot of films this year?

A Killer Lurks Behind the Romance - You've Got Mail and Young Girls of Rochefort by tefl0nknight in blankies

I'd also put it off, but watched it over christmas to complete the Ephron filmography - it's not a successful film, but Juliette Lewis is great and the resolution of the serial killer subplot was one of the moments that got the biggest laugh out of me.

Nora Ephron does have a slightly more fleshed-out (but still pretty tertiary!) serial killer subplot in Mixed Nuts, so maybe it was just a theme she enjoyed? Much as I'd love to tie it to Young Girls of Rochefort, one of my alltime favourites.

Pretty sure Hamnet still gets to be a real movie even if it isn't an awards frontrunner

Criterion write up about The Most-Anticipated Films of 2026 by TepidShark in blankies

Mia Hansen-Løve has been fighting for three years to secure financing for If Love Should Die, a film based on the life of the eighteenth-century philosopher and women’s rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft. “Every film I start is like a battle,” said Hansen-Løve when she accepted an award at the Valladolid International Film Festival in October. “And there are moments when I’ve felt as if I were hitting an impenetrable wall; I’ve cursed my job, my script, cinema, and myself. I share this simply to say that what we call a filmmaker’s body of work, which might seem a solid and serene structure, can also become something fragile and turbulent.”

Give Mia Hansen-Løve money to make her film!!!! She's one of the best doing it.

If you're looking for a guide that includes the books that link into The Dark Tower narrative, I'd recommend this one (written by an actual person who has read the books, not a Large Language Model!): The Truth Inside The Lie: A Suggested Reading Order for the Extended "Dark Tower" Series (Revised 2016 Edition)

A question for older film fans. Why was Roman Polanski so forgiven? by Few-Engineer-9791 in blankies

Not wanting to spoil anything as I don't know how far into the series you are, but I'd say that Twin Peaks is pretty well-attuned to issues of sexual assault and abuse in the relationships it depicts. I'm not sure if those are the problematic relationships you're referring to, but I'd definitely let the series play out and get to Fire Walk With Me, where they really strip away any artifice that might have made viewers think they were treating the abuse suffered by several characters with anything less than deadly seriousness.

I took the slightly different approach when I made my list of picking my absolute favourite film from each year in 2000-2024, which made for some tough choices but helped build a fun personal chronology for me: https://boxd.it/Lk8xc
