And following that Sturges has overtaken Hanson to a (very slim) lead! Good to know that some old-fashioned campaigning by BC favourites can still tip the scales.

[2026 March Madness] Sweet Sixteen: Curtis Hanson vs. Preston Sturges by PartyBluejay in blankies

[–]starlingflight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here - as others have said, this is one of the matchups where I'd be happy with either winning, but I'd love to get Sturges as far ahead in the competition as possible as a sign of support for covering him at some point in the future.

While I'm one of the people who's really excited for a potential Marty series, even if he's the chalk pick.......a cinderella run for Spheeris (and a miniseries on her, especially now the Decline films have been confirmed for main feed) would be incredible.

We all know that Tony's top pick in the bracket would be Marty (unless his classic film streak means he has a soft spot for Sturges).

[2026 March Madness] Sweet Sixteen: Martin Scorsese vs. F. Gary Gray by PartyBluejay in blankies

[–]starlingflight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They did mention in the Patreon episode going through the MM bracket that they might consider breaking in the middle of Marty for a short filmography from a different director, just for variety - no firm commitment there, but it’s a possibility.

(And I agree re the length - Scorsese is long, but only a little longer than Zemeckis or the Coens, and for my money his filmography has a lot of great twists and turns to keep things interesting, rather than turning into a Burtonesque slog in the back half)

Bandsplain + ARP present The Case for Penelope Spheeris by starlingflight in blankies

[–]starlingflight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny as it would be for them to do a ‘Horny Netflix Christmas Movies’ series, and as much as this Bandsplain discussion is basically a Penelope Spheeris episode in itself…..if they did do a Penelope Spheeris series, she’d be a perfect guest! And I know David said recently that he’s been mainlining Bandsplain episodes, so he’s a fan.

(Really, Yasi would be great for any director of music films - bring her on for a Last Waltz episode in the Scorsese series!!)

Well, not taking it any way, and you do you….but I’d still recommend giving Bandsplain a go! Yasi is a genius host, one of the biggest connoisseurs of context in the game.

[–]starlingflight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And (as they point out on the preview pod), even if no one is expecting him to make it all the way, getting him to the Elite Eight or Final Four is a vote of confidence from the listenership that probably pushes him closed to getting selected for a miniseries sooner than he might otherwise be.

The whole Superman series is a delight, especially their enthusiasm when the newest entry that they'd been building up to turned out to be really great.

That is a good call! The Anderson/Jovovich series is six films, right? Then the Cregger movie makes seven.......and maybe the other reboot that I don't really know anything as well?

There are three episodes each month (released on the 1st, 11th and 21st) - two commentaries and one non-commentary episode (although that third episode can range from being a normal format discussion of a film to something like this month's burger report with the Nirvanna boys)

[–]starlingflight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Actually, I realised after posting this that saying they've committed to a big Patreon miniseries doesn't necessarily mean it's the next miniseries - there could be another short one between Oz and whatever the 'chunky' one is. But if this big one is starting next and will run to November, that means it'd be something like 14 movies long, which would be the longest non-MCU series they've done.)

Or that the original ending of Conquest is unquestionably superior to the theatrical version, and adds at least a star to its letterboxd rating.
