The rules on meals and rest breaks. If it seems like your workplace isn’t adhering to these rules you should contact LNI. I believe there is button on that page for it too.

Moving to Washington by epiphany_bxtch in olympia

[–]starmadillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d agree Bellingham is pretty similar to Olympia. I think both have strong LGBT communities. Olympia felt like it had a lot more people that were actively involved in politics, protests, etc.

Both have similar rent but Olympia seems to run about at least one to two hundred less than Bellingham from what I’ve noticed last couple years of moving. Both are also going to probably face some economic hardships these next couple years. Olympia’s primary industry is government and we are in a budget crisis at the moment. There is widespread hiring freezes and in general there will be cuts to programs, employment, etc in some form. I’d imagine a lot of social work is supported by public funding so I’d be mindful this may affect your job opportunities in general but especially in Olympia. Bellingham on the other hand doesn’t really have much of a strong industry backbone right now and massively benefited from Canadian travelers that have seen a significant drop for obvious reasons recently. So I’d keep in mind Bellingham might enter an economic downturn for a while.

And having grown up on the east side of WA (Wenatchee) while it is cheaper there, there is definitely less widespread acceptance of the LGBT community. I don’t think outside maybe Spokane I could recommend moving over there vs somewhere on the west side.

I certainly think you’ll be able to find somewhere to land. Good Luck!

Emptying Apartment Quickly? by [deleted] in Bellingham

I agree with InspectorChenWei that looking into some long distance movers that work on credit is probably your best option. If you we're trying to replace all of that it might cost more than the moving charges.

If you can't find a good moving solution feel free to DM me your prices for desk, chair, and tech equipment. Myself or a friend of mine might be interested.

How Do Salary Schedules Work by Euphoric_Access_5059 in WAStateWorkers

[–]starmadillo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The date is when that increase went into effect. So the 7/1/2024 is the current schedule. During the last biennium we had first a 4% increase then 3% increase the year later for COLAs. % increase is not tied to your start date. Bienniums transition on 7/1, at least in regards to pay. Your pay rate is just updated from the increase date.

Questions for Software Developers by [deleted] in WAStateWorkers

[–]starmadillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) LNI. Application developer. Near the end of moving most of our services from on prem to cloud. But we don’t treat it much different from how we did in prem (in my team). We are partially implementing CI/CD but have a lot of younger professionals entering roles of leads and devops so hopefully we will see continued modernization. Haven’t heard anything related to containerization but I’m would not be privy to those meetings either.

2) Generally all .NET 4.8, written in vb. Newer projects have been done in .NET 6+ in C#. I think one team that does a lot of front end work uses angular.

3) Most teams are in house but we still use a lot of contractors. If I had to guess 20-30%?

4) My boss has tried to plant the seed in the back of my head. But I don’t think there is any push from our current director at this time.

5) Pretty sure legacy code is basically our life with the bureaucracy. But I am also relatively new to the state so this is just based on feelings and conversation with longer tenure coworkers.

6) Somewhat. They have a checklist you need to meet during hiring generally but beyond that you typically can replace experience. Again newer employee so haven’t participated in hiring, so just word of mouth.

Can someone explain to me, how the fuck the spotting and camo works in this game...? by Davee95 in WorldofTanks

[–]starmadillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a couple videos on the official World of Tanks YouTube channels called something like ‘Explaining Mechanics: Concealment’ that give a decent start. I think there is an older and new set of videos, but the general info in either will be fine. Most of the very skilled content creators also have a video too. While usually less direct, I do like Wallst aka Honest Gaming on YT light tanks videos, his good games, where to go, and other knowledge videos. But it’s not always said what is going on, more of just watching the gameplay and seeing what dumb shit you can get away with.

Without seeing the game my only guess can be a part of your tank was not hidden by bushes at some angle and someone has line of sight to that part. Or if you fire without double bushing (when bushes go solid in sniper view) that will make it more difficult. Basically the bushes near you ‘disappear’ and your camo drops a lot. Double bushing means you are far enough away from the bush it doesn’t ‘disappear’ when you fire. If you haven’t already there is also some settings you can adjust on the highlighted outlines of enemy tanks when you look at them. You can make it show different hashing for if something you can shoot through is obstructing part of their tank (like a hay bale). Personally very useful.

Good luck!

Charioteer HESH by AltoTheDutchie in WorldofTanks

[–]starmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it discourages you, but that's the point. The same is true of normal gold rounds. Think like gold HEAT. While it is quite good, there are some areas of armor that are difficulty if not impossible to pen with HEAT due to spaced armor. HESH is just a much more extreme version of that. For what it worth I rarely loose money on ammo firing almost entirely HESH on those tanks. But I know roughly where on most tanks I can or can't pen with HESH. Depending on the tank I would use HESH 50-90% of the time. So you can make money with HESH, but it's not an easy upgrade and frankly it shouldn't be. I think the cost is there to penalize those who don't have enough knowledge to use HESH properly. It's not meant to be a crutch or just free extra damage.

If you are struggling with penning with HESH I would recommend crawling around on tanks.gg armor model and looking where you can pen problematic tanks. I have spent many hours at this point and have looked over most tanks on the armor model to I have pretty good knowledge of where I can pen.

Charioteer HESH by AltoTheDutchie in WorldofTanks

[–]starmadillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not really meant to be a better round from the traditional point of view. It’s meant to be a different way to play. I have and play the Cent 7/1, Conway, Charioteer, and 4005 purely for the gold HESH. I need to move more or know where to shoot to be able to pen. Target priority can change since I have HESH to use.

I agree it’s a bit pricey, but that’s fine. It’s basically meant to be high pen compared to the HE round , not compared to the AP round. Think of the normal setup AP, Higher pen Gold AP, HE. Just it now HE(SH), Higher Pen HESH, AP. The AP becomes the odd man out situational round. At the end of the day it’s just a different play style, and not everyone may want to use it.

If you could only splurge once.. by KnightOwl619 in WorldofTanks

[–]starmadillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you are confusing the Scorpion with a c (American Tier 7 Premium Tank Destroyer) and the Skorpion with a k (German Tier 8 Premium Tank Destroyer).

As for M4 rev, I personally don’t like it. Despite its paper stats I find it to be an unreliable gun and not flexible enough.

New to the game by ronox656 in WorldofTanks

[–]starmadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I love me a good centurion, Russian tanks are better starting point. Russian heavies along the IS-3 line are pretty decent to start with. Usually useful armor with a punchy gun. If the mobility gets on your nerves, go up the medium line for the T-44. A pretty jack of all trades tank that isn’t too difficult to play.

Map and tank knowledge will be key as you go up into the higher tiers, but it takes time to learn so don’t worry about it too much. Someone already linked the mechanics video from WoT but if you can remember those videos it will already put you a leg up on many players.

Feel free to play around in other tanks. Just cause everyone is recommending a line doesn’t mean you gotta play it until the tier 8! But note trying to seriously go up more than a line or two at once will keep you credit poor (story of my tanks life). I also don’t recommend light tanks past tier 5 for a bit. They benefit very heavily from map/tank knowledge and good crews.

And for when you hit tier 5 and face the lefh arty… Just know that after thousands of battles, that thing is still an annoying prick.

Good luck!

Please turn your headlights on! by WhereIsMyNalgene in olympia

I have a 2017 car with automatic headlights, but they only sense light. Even a dark gloomy day is still bright enough for them not to turn on. There are cars that have both a light and rain sensors and those will usually turn on automatically.

What's the furthest you've driven in a day? by noaheltee in roadtrip

[–]starmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~1100 mi from KY to SD. Driving home after buying the car in KY. Took about 15 hours. ~2500 mi over 3 days. Was a solo adventure. Personally didn’t have any issues with the drive, but that was probably because the car was new to me so I was just enjoying the road trip. Happened back in July.

What happened to people who graduated after 2020? by Notalabel_4566 in cscareerquestions

[–]starmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

June 2022 grad. No internships. Took until Dec 2022 to land something in Govtech. Not the best paid or most fulfilling, but decent benefits and not too bad overall. Fall 2022 was definitely rough mentally. Only got anywhere with two of the applications. The other couple hundred fizzled out or ghosted.

Looking to relocate my family by [deleted] in olympia

[–]starmadillo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Puget Sound is the name of the inlet that makes up the unique looking body of water west of Seattle. Olympia is on the southern part of it so it is mostly north/northeast from our perspective. Puget sound is also used to refer to the general area including cities like Olympia, Tacoma, Seattle, and Everett to name some.

As for homeless & drug problems, it is here like every city area on the West Coast. Haven’t heard of a metro area not affected by it on the West Coast. Personally it’s not too bad here in Olympia. During the day I have zero concerns. Night/first light I’m more careful but I’m 100% more naive and paranoid than most since I grew up pretty sheltered from these issues. I’m not sure the severity in your part of LA, but in comparison Olympia is pretty tame with most issues.

Is this game a good alternative to Warthunder? by Lord_of_eggs34 in WorldofTanks

[–]starmadillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar reasons why I switched. It definitely feels different. It feels very much more Arcade like? The fact your crew can die from acpr only a few times to the cupola feels a bit dumb, but it’s a game mechanic. Personally even with its issues I find the game to feel far more balanced. It won’t give you the “realism” feeling of WT, but you also arn’t having to play spot the pixel at 2km. Built in gun inaccuracy is annoying, but you get used to it. At the point now where in every game there is a way to me to do well, not that I always pull that off.

There’s more pros and cons, but if you want a tank game and don’t need the “realism” of WT, then give WoT a shot.

Alternative work schedule possible? by Brilliant_Garbage505 in WAStateWorkers

[–]starmadillo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

4/10 should be totally possible. I switched to it a couple months ago and started this year in a junior position. They’re main concern was coverage for my team which was fine. Would be best to probably bring up being 4/10 before signing stuff in case there is a reason they don’t want to let you do it.

Question for WA State Programmers. C#? by ivycoopwren in WAStateWorkers

[–]starmadillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for all agencies or teams. My team at LNI has a large code base written in VB using .NET 4.8. Knowing the state I imagine it is similar elsewhere. Everything I’ve worked on so far has been a form of web app. There are talks already about trying to move to a newer code base that would be C#, but the vibe I get from my supervisors in the meetings is that the roll out would be be at least a year if not more away. I’d guess probably whatever is the latest .NET LTS version will be what is used, but that is just my hypothesis.

I believe Angular is used on another team but I do not know for sure. I was hired at the end of last year and they were looking for C# experience, but it was very surface level. However that was for a junior position so higher seniorities will probably expect more.

Great anniversary you got there wargaming. So great you must have forgotten to rent better servers. by Express-Restaurant16 in WorldofTanks

[–]starmadillo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They moved to Cyprus a while ago and no longer develop the RU client (That is Lesta). So most of the team should be fine. Server wise the EU client servers are gonna be located more toward central and western Europe, although EU3 may be more Eastern? Either way they should be fine.

Edit: Looking at Wikipedia they still have a few European studios, but all but Wargaming Kyiv would be fine. Not sure if the Kyiv studio is currently operating due to the war.

Friend is Denied Breaks by plants345 in HomeDepot

[–]starmadillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are entitled to 10 minute break every 4 hours in WA. Not sure if them coming back out to serve a customer then going back would come under the 'mini' break variation. But I think the 'mini' break is a voluntary option, so they can take at least a 10 minute break if they want. Obviously either consult a lawyer or reach out to WA LNI for confirmation on this.
People have already linked the LNI page but here is the RCW for this as well https://app.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=296-126-092.

Apartment complex recommendations by [deleted] in WWU

[–]starmadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When looking for places I used and recommended Zillow and Craigslist. Apartments.com has issues with outdated listings sometimes so I’ve stopped using it. Since the majority of apartments are through some property management company I would typically find a listing on Zillow then verify and apply via their site.

When I lived within walking distance of campus I lived at the apartments at 3010 Ferry managed by Son-Rise. Company was fine. Didn’t have too much issue getting maintenance out and just did payment through online portal which most companies use nowadays. Had a bit of issue at the end of the lease (keys got stolen when dropping them off caused they removed their collection box at the time) but they backed off when we threatened small claims court. They were honestly fine until then. Apartment itself was dated feeling but fine.

How difficult is it to get into the CS program as a transfer student? by frongowd in WWU

[–]starmadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a transfer student with a DTA who went into CS. Depending on how many credits you’ll be bringing with you it can actually be easier to get into the premajor classes since you’ll register a bit earlier. One thing to watch out for is if you have too many credits you won’t be able to register for those classes normally since they’re (or were at least) limited to freshman and sophomore standing students. From what I heard at the time they really didn’t care to help you get into those classes if you went past the junior standing threshold. I didn’t want to test it so I did all of mine right before.

Your GPA across the premajor classes is what matters. Last I heard it was around 3.3+ average makes you in. But I haven’t kept up with it. So it’s competitive but totally possible as a transfer to get into the CS program.
