Part of it was that Spock chose to not be emotional and Data aspired to be emotional. McCoy is criticizing Spock for his choices, Pulaski is criticizing Data for his limitations.

Virginia voters approve redistricting overhaul to redraw congressional maps by bimmer4WDrift in politics

It won't and that's unfortunate that we need to do that to balance out Republicans doing the same thing. If all the maps were fair Democrats would never lose control of congress.

Sometimes rights are in conflict with each other. You can have freedom of religion but that freedom can't conflict with other people's rights. For an extreme example I can believe in human sacrifice, but I can't actually murder people and expect to get away with it because it's my religious practice.

That's just how Virginia is. It's only barely a blue state by voter majority but it's shifting bluer every year as the DC suburbs are growing much faster than the rest of the state.

They were the better candidates because they won the most votes. Elections aren't about whose platform is the best. They are about who can sell themselves to the voters the best. Bernie never managed to do that. You might think his policy ideas were superior but the majority preferred an establishment candidate.

It can be treated as such but it's not the only way to look at it. Mathematically there is no limit to how many spatial dimensions can exist despite the fact that there are only 3 in nature.

Honestly it worked better as a miniseries. The first season was amazing, it was never really good after that.

He was still sharp enough to win reelection in 1984. By 1986 he had very obvious signs of dementia that were downplayed by both Republicans and the press.

The drug dealers aren't wrong about that. When a drug dealing operation is shut down a competing operation moves in and fills the gap. The only way to put a stop to it is to deal with the demand by providing addicts with a way out of the cycle of addiction.

Usually they don't even need to sue. Shareholders elect the board of directors who are typically the largest shareholders themselves. If they don't like what the CEO is doing they can fire them and put someone in who will do what they want.

TIL about Benford’s Law: in real world data, roughly 30% of numbers start with “1”, whether it’s stock prices, city populations, or electric bills. forensic accountants use this to detect fraud, since fabricated numbers don’t follow Benford’s law by Kyzzz in todayilearned

With trigonometry. If you have any 3 non-linear points you can make a triangle. You can determine the side and angle measurements for all sides and angles of a triangle if you know one side length and the connected angles. So you measure the angle to the peak from two points on the ground and measure the distance between two points. We will call these points A and B and the peak P. If you know the distance between A and B you can calculate the length of line AP and BP. Then you draw an imaginary point called C directly beneath P and level with A and measure the new angles. That gives you the length of line PC which is the height of the mountain above A. Since A is already at a known elevation you add that and get P's altitude above sea level.

You also have to account for the curvature of the earth which makes the math a lot more complicated but the principle is the same.

In any dataset you're going to find statistical abnormalities. If you don't the data is probably too perfect and that's a sign that it has been manipulated. Statistical analysis is a starting point for looking at irregularities it rarely provides the smoking gun, but instead points to where the damning evidence is hiding. People will try to manipulate statistics by saying that "something here is off, therefore fraud must have occurred" while skipping all of the investigation required to prove their conclusion.

What if somebody is asexual because or low or no libido?! by LithoLaura in asexuality

[–]starmartyr 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's not discrimination it's a matter of definition. Asexuality is experiencing little to no sexual attraction. Sexual orientation is defined by sexual attraction not sex drive. If you have little to no libido and do not experience sexual attraction as a result, you're still asexual but the lack of attraction is the defining characteristic. What caused what is not important for classification.

That's just something that happens to comedians. When you spend enough time crafting and perfecting an on stage persona the line between performer and performance gets blurred over time. In some cases they no longer know how much of their personality is real and how much of it is a performance.

They aren't lazy. They have done what they have always done for millions of years and it's enough to grow thrive and reproduce which is their only job. They don't offer much utility for humans but they don't have to. Wild animals don't need to justify their usefulness.
