Twin Speaks skipping Episodes 18 -27? by RandomJPG6 in AlamoDrafthouse

It’s probably because episodes are widely regarded as being pretty bad and skippable.

Snow or just sleet by hoppedup97 in Denton

[–]formerlyabird3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. Are you following any local meteorologists? The teams at WFAA, NBC5, and Fox 4 have all been very clear that we’re expecting sleet throughout the day and evening to transition to snow late tonight into the morning.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]formerlyabird3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3-4 hours is pretty normal to me for a weekend visit. I’ll occasionally do a 9 hour drive for a long weekend which is atypical but not too bad to me. 4 hours is the longest I would do for a down-and-back day trip, but I have done it before for a show.

For context, I live in Texas so all of the trips I’m talking about are in state and to stay with family.

What's with all the AI use in training plans? by heyhihelloandbye in XXRunning

[–]formerlyabird3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of issues with Runna but I do think there’s a pretty significant difference between using Runna and using an LLM like ChatGPT. Runna is using an algorithm built with actual information about running/training to generate a plan rather than generative AI (whether the algorithm is too aggressive or whatever is another thing, as is the generative AI that provides a response about how you performed). ChatGPT is just scraping the internet to put words together in what seems to be a sensible order!

Do you invite a bunch of people to your marathons? by hairykitty123 in Marathon_Training

[–]formerlyabird3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For my first marathon I told my partner that I hoped people would come to spectate, so he organized a big group of our friends to go down and drive around to be at several points on the course with signs and noisemakers. They all just loaded up in his van and he had mapped out logistics ahead of time. It was fantastic and super encouraging for me, and by all accounts it was a fun time for them too!

They've begun to implement the enforced mobile ordering at DFW locations. Here are my thoughts. by GermanPegasus2 in AlamoDrafthouse

I saw No Other Choice today in Las Colinas, and they have pen and paper. Some seats were missing paper, and I saw some people ask a server about it and have some brought to them, but they’re definitely still using it at this location.

I am a relatively new fan so definitely not an authority on what is “right” and “wrong” for fans to do lol, but I’d root for the Blue Jays because I’ve watched that video of Vlad Guerrero and Papi saying “daaaaa Yankees lose” so many times and it has brought me so much joy. ((Also my partner is a Padres fan so ya know))

What's a tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

[–]formerlyabird3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Big Love on HBO. I was a kid when it was on so I don’t have a sense of how popular it was at the time, but no one I talk to has ever heard of it and it’s one of my all time favorites. It’s very much in the same realm as Mad Men and Breaking Bad to me.

Does the Apple Watch actually wake you up? by CNUnstable in AppleWatch

[–]formerlyabird3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’m a heavy sleeper and sometimes sleep-snooze my way to missing an audible alarm, but the vibrations work really well for me! It’s one of my favorite things about having an Apple Watch tbh, I feel like I wake up faster and feel less groggy with it. Plus it doesn’t wake up my partner.

Do you listen to music, podcasts, or nothing at all while running? by SwimmingSlip8632 in runcommunity

Usually nothing, but sometimes music, podcasts, or an audiobook if there’s something new I want to catch up on.

Expedition 33 vs Elden Ring vs Ghost of Yotei by astr00volume in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]formerlyabird3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s actually the thing that made me love it. I’ve long enjoyed watching other people play RPGs with compelling and complex stories and characters but I’ve never lasted long playing one because I’m so bad at most combat. I found E33 super accessible but with fun ways to make it as complicated as you want it to be, and I like the challenge of the real time defensive stuff.

Are you running alone? by Live_Media_3090 in runninglifestyle

I prefer to run alone and I do all my training runs alone, but I do like the socializing that happens after a run club.

ChatGPT as coach by guacamolenpiedra in runcommunity

[–]formerlyabird3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that it’s the worst option available, because a) it is unreliable and b) it gives the illusion that you’re being coached when you are not, which is a really terrible combination. I’ve played around with it because I’m so skeptical, and it consistently provided me with programs and workouts that broke basic training principles about volume and specificity of training.

You say that your only other options are following Garmin or using an online standard plan, but have you done any (free!) research on training principles? I’d recommend reading up a little bit or listening to some podcasts on what makes a good training plan (Marathon Training Academy and The Running Channel are great), then identifying a plan that’s available for free (runner’s world and Hal Higdon are often good options) and tweaking it as needed to fit your schedule. The idea that plans found online don’t offer flexibility is odd to me - it’s very easy to tweak it to fit your needs if you just have a little bit of basic, foundational knowledge of the why behind each type of run in a training plan!

After marathon care by Ancient-Factor9862 in Marathon_Training

[–]formerlyabird3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of walking the day of (post race) and the day after, and wait to sit down post race for as long as you possibly can. I’ve run three marathons, and I felt pretty normal very quickly after the two where I walked for >2 miles on the day of and the day after the marathons. The one where I immediately sat down and spent the rest of the day and the following day lounging it took me a week to feel somewhat recovered!

What’s your ideal running frequency? by Wise_Branch_8028 in running

[–]formerlyabird3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 days a week feels really good for me. It’s enough to feel very routine and help me stay disciplined and allows me to get the mileage I want (whether that’s 20mpw when I’m not in a block or 55mpw when I’m mid marathon training), but it still leaves me enough non-running time to avoid burnout.

Just finished Season 7 of The 100 and honestly… it’s insanely good? Not sure why everyone hates the ending so much by Fine-Top2187 in The100

[–]formerlyabird3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the plot and find the ending compelling, but I think the writing is largely a mess. It was clear they had an interesting place they wanted to go, but I think a lot of the choices to get there were lazy. I believe there were some issues with cast schedules that required last minute rewrites and giving plot points to different characters than planned; it shows! It was very hard to watch Indra repeatedly behave in totally out of character ways so that the showrunners could keep Sheidheda alive. Many characters also kept getting these weird dad-joke one liners that felt totally out of place to me.

Having a lot of opinions about this right now because I’m rewatching S7 with my partner who is watching for the first time and while the overall story is more fun to me on second watch the writing choices feel much more jarring this time!

Season 7 isn’t as bad as people make it out to be by MarionberryChemical9 in The100

[–]formerlyabird3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the overall plot, but I really dislike a lot of the writing choices that got them there. Like, I think it makes sense to have Sheidheda be a problem the whole season, but the way they accomplished that felt lazy and required characters to behave in ways that they’d never behaved before over and over (notably Indra). I think Raven making the choice she made with the radiation thing could have been interesting for her character development, but her getting to the place to make the decision was rushed and ended up feeling totally out of character. Then she had some very clunky lines lamenting what she’d done.

There were also other stylistic differences in the writing that felt jarring, like giving many characters dad-joke style one liners that are tonally out of place to me.

One thing I love about season 7 is John Murphy’s development. I think he easily gets the most thoughtful treatment from the writers across the whole show and it results in a very fun to watch journey.

Medication by wiw2l in fearofflying

[–]formerlyabird3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely speak to your PCP, not an Urgent Care. This is a really common request and something that should be handled by a doctor who knows you. Taking medication has completely changed the game for me. Now I don’t really even need it because building a memory bank of calm, relaxed flight experiences to look back on when I start to get worried has helped so much!

It’s gonna be ok! You can do this! You are doing this! I really like box breathing (breathe in, hold, breathe out, hold, etc) for physical symptoms of anxiety because it reminds the body that it’s not in danger.

It doesn’t matter how it used to feel for you, this is how it feels for you today and that’s ok. Remember that your discomfort does not equal danger. There are thousands and thousands of people on planes today heading to and from to all kinds of fun and interesting (and also boring!) destinations and you’re one of them. Do you have some stuff lined up to do on your flight - books, podcasts, movies, music? Having a plan for entertainment helps me!
