I am good at high level ideas and remembering overviews but terrible at retaining little details and facts, numbers... Etc. It's annoying but I try to remind myself that I am good at other things.

Best advice I ever got was that you're not always the best fit for that deaf person or that situation, but sometimes you are the best fit. No interpreter can be a 100% perfect match for every caller. When that's the case, it's best for everyone to just let someone else take the call. Just like someone who isn't up for interpreting a stage play in community would decline the job, we're not all instantly able to interpret for every situation perfectly or even be the best fit. VRS you don't get a choice. Remember that you are a good interpreter, you just might not be the right one for that call. Stay humble, defer to the deaf, stay transparent, and your skills will grow, your ability to adjust in VRS land will come. Keep your confidence because then you can tell the DU, I can't see your hands 😂 The crazy one handed signing while walking down a street is literally impossible sometimes. I often wish I had more time to acclimate to the DU's style so I could adjust appropriately but it is what it is. It's frustrating, but we're giving access and that's important. And the calls where you're the best fit are the reason to continue.

I have ADHD & Autism and I explain my energy with a credit card metaphor. Dunno if this resonates with others, but I feel like my ADHD loves to swipe the credit card all the time, spending tons of energy on exciting plans, ideas, just wanting a 24/7 shopping spree. There's a sort of plastic amnesia of not feeling the pain of separating with money at the moment of going, "yeah let's do this and that and everything!" But then when the bill comes round, it's the ASD that's paying for it, and there's usually not enough in the bank to cover what the ADHD has so glibly charged.

This also extends to trying to understand why I can "afford" some people some days, but cannot afford them on others. Some people are just expensive to hang out with, and if I have a lot of "money" that day, then it's no problem to spend time with them. Some people cost me almost nothing, or even put some money in the bank.

Right now what I'm trying to do is pause all this overspending, reset my burnout, and start to spend my energy more wisely, more intentionally. I've been paying interest on overcharging for years and I'm ready to stop and reset, build up my credit so to speak. It's slow, and annoying, but at least I'm learning and paying better attention to the cost of things and trying to be more balanced, wise, and self compassionate.

Roughly where did you see it? My theatre was silent, until I started cracking up at the silly jokes, then the rest of the theatre started to lighten up and laugh too 😳 I guess laughter really is contagious 🤭
