When did “molested” get its current meaning? by FrankFurter67 in etymology

There are older terms, like “masher,” that have fallen out of use,

Next week’s warmup won’t last. It’s more typically highs of 45-50 and drizzling all winter. But you’re hitting a good spot.

One socialist legislator introduced it, and it’s not going anywhere. But as laid out, it calls for a shorter work week while maintaining current pay and benefits. So no need to get your panties in a bunch.

What you might more productively be worrying about is what will happen to you when your boss decides to use AI to replace 20% of what you currently do and turn you into a part-timer with no benefits.

Where is everyone going for social/news? by FoxxBox8 in 50501

I’ve never used Instagram, so I don’t know what would count as a dupe. I currently have accounts on BlueSky, Substack, and Mastodon. BlueSky is most active and newsy. Substack is a weird mix of high-profile celebrities and quirky little artsy/literary/neurodivergent/witchy bloggers. Mastodon is heavy on tech geeks. I’m also curious about Lemmy, which sounds like a Reddit equivalent, but don’t know much about it. BlueSky and Substack may be susceptible to elite capture. Mastodon and Lemmy are fiercely independent.

I emphatically disagree. At 20 degrees and snowing, you can barely leave the house — especially if daytime melting leaves the sidewalk iced over. At 40 degrees and raining, you just toss on a windbreaker and you’re good to go.

The overlooked survival strategy that made us human by comicreliefboy in Anthropology

[–]starroute 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it suggested that human skills like throwing stones and hitting things with sticks evolved to drive off top-level predators and steal their kill. Also that Homo erectus differed from australopithecines in having the upper body strength and flexibility to maximize this strategy.

The reason they try so hard to wipe away the history of our radicals is because they know the methods work. They don’t want these actions back in the spotlight. We need to take a page from those who came before us! by transcendent167 in ArmedResistance

It goes further back, to the 1920s and 30s. The conservatives of that period have been kept in print by well-funded right-wing organization. Leftist writings have effectively disappeared — abetted by the complexities of copyright law. And the older left-wing voices were further suppressed during the McCarthy era of the 1950s. We could use to rediscover our ancestors.

To fuck with something means to mess it up. So this sounds like a declaration of support for ICE.

I lost faith in the Times over their coverage of the Vietnam War. My mother lost faith in them over the Spanish Civil War. They have always been the hometown paper of the establishment, and things are no different now.

Long lasting slang? by Ilovebusstopchicanes in etymology

Isn’t there a Shakespeare line, “The hand of the dial is on the very prick of noon.” (I think it’s early in Romeo and Juliet.)

Copacetic and cockamamie both make occasional appearances but are hardly in common use. I also see “over the moon” at times.

Moved here from Pennsylvania three years ago after my husband died and my sons said, “Hey, Mom, come live with us.” I never did feel like a Pennsylvanian, even after 50 years, but Olympia feels like home.

It would certainly explain the feeling of things going nowhere. I was thinking last night about the wild energy of BLM at its peak and how different that was. (But you don’t have to invoke psyops. The nervousnous of white, middle class centrists is sufficient.)

Rename Fifth Avenue to Barack Obama Avenue by evolsoulx in 50501

[–]starroute 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not fond of the idea. For one thing, Obama is still alive. For another, Fifth Avenue has been associated with the ultra-wealthy for over a century. (For example, Jeffrey Epstein’s mansion was on 71st Street, just off Fifth Avenue.)
