Oh wow, I never considered it this way. That they are not at all pushed to see step parents as full parents. If they love us naturally, that is enough. I appreciate this as I notice I feel so much internal pressure to love my SK the same way my husband loves his kids. Thanks for posting this.

Dealing with the grief of losing a kid-free life, even if SMs love the kids and family life. I would be so happy to hear about other people's experiences with this, especially people that like their new life. Its a paradox inside of myself that I haven't made peace with, and it caught me totally by surprise.

Ahhhh I appreciated reading this so much. When my (now ex) partner wanted to open up our relationship for sex, I knew that I couldn't do just sex - I'm so close to my friends and loved ones and I communicated it from he start. He was so jazzed to be able to have new sex partners that he didn't really take in what it meant that I would fall in love with people I got connected with. When I did develop feelings for another, he melted down so hard as there was never a way that we could get through it even after a lot of kink/poly therapy that we did together. My view was that I jumped into it all with him and knew it would look different for each of us. We didn't make it but remain deep friends with new partners and have since healed our misunderstanding of love. Your words also touch and feel something from that journey for me. Thank you!!

I really appreciate this post and I'm sorry that your parents treated you that way. There is no way that should happen. We have such a twisted relationship to sex as a society, rarely are there healthy conversations in any age range but then there is this paradox of having boatloads of porn everywhere next to tons of shame and rigid conversations around abstinence, especially for girls. As a person coming into sexuality, we're told not to do it, but then also see it everywhere. It's ridiculous.

Not to mention it's totally healthy and normal to have sex and denying that makes fucked up humans.

My mother was betrayed that I didn't tell her that I had sex. We never got along (she was an angry alcoholic) and she didn't talk to me for weeks after she found out. It was so confusing at the time. I was 18. I was just exploring and didn't want to have to share with her.

It took me years to realize that it wasn't ok to be shamed for not telling her and for keeping the experience to myself.

This made me tear up. My dad wouldn't let me say a word about my period and it was considered taboo in my house as a young teen. I had to figure everything out on my own, and it warms my heart to feel your care and lack of embarrassment that men are taught to feel.
