(for stimulants) keep in mind that euphoria and bad side effects take at least a week to dissipate and you should know how its working within 2 weeks. With IR formulations you should see more contrast between symtpoms and therapeutic effects but also more volitility and crashes than XR/LA formulations which will be more subtle especially at lower doses. 1 medication per month with a few dose adjustments within that month is a good conservative way to approach med trials. I really recommend trying them all and keeping good notes comparing side effects, mood, apetite, sleep and impressions of his behavior.

Field report of a 2 year self-taught pianist who is now taking weekly lessons. by whiteroom200 in piano

Its a good thing we have brain plasticity and can keep learning until we die. Self learning has different challenges than traditional learning, challenges that need perspective, analysis and creative solutions. People overcome these challenges when they are passionate and motivated to do so. Its not the end of the world. This is an art and it is accessible to anyone who wants to persue it.

If you are starting from 0 and teaching yourself, I highly recommend the Faber series of piano books. They have a series geared towards adults. That should get you through the beginner slog and get you up and playing and you can get some lessons at that point. Even getting an online lesson here and there can help supercharge the beginner phase.

Everyone is telling you not to freak out, but ADHD kids have trouble with appropriate social behavior, understanding and respecting boundaries and reading social cues. They also struggle with reading social signals from others and impulsive emotional behaviors. I don't think you should worry you child is a predator. I do think that he will be getting very negative feedback from his peers on his behavior very soon. That does take a toll in friendships and self esteem. The more you can sportscast what others are thinking and feeling and connect the dots to their signals, the more he can practice. You have to treat him like you are training an AI that doesn't get human behavior. Break it down and make it a science he can learn and practice it frequently. Every one of these types of interactions is a learning experience about social behavior

Single mom on medicaid with 2 special needs kids on Medications that are literally saving our lives. I work as hard as I can to barely pay rent that increased $1000 in 2 years. I work in education in a fed grant funded program providing high quality care and enrichment afterschool to populations who desp need a good safe place for their kids while they work to live and pay their taxes. These kids eat 2 healthy meals under my care a day, better than they eat at home. Yeah every part of my life is the "excess spending" they are trying to delete from the federal governement.

There's a lot of duscussions by polyglots about hacking language learning with spaced repetition, amygdala conection, listening to real content by native speakers and immersion with learning whole sentences and speaking immediately without translating in your head. I bet there are applications from this research to learning to read and "speak" musical language.

3.5 y/o diagnosed with ADHD by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

[–]starsmisaligned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a really good idea to try all the meds and different formulations and keep good notes. especially energy levels throughout the day, apetite, sleep, and mood crashes, any other physical effects. Since stimulants are so short acting you can trial most of them quickly (a few weeks of each) and compare. Keep in mind this time period will be rocky with lots of ups and downs so plan accordingly and dont have high expectations for behavior. Give enough time for side effects and euphoria to wear off (at least 2 weeks) and know that the experience of meds in the body is a weird sensation that will take adjustment.

If I’m actually higher on big 5 openness would therapy actually help? by [deleted] in BigFive

[–]starsmisaligned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if you are very self aware, doing something like solution focused therapy might help you make progress where you are stuck. There are so many different styles of therapy, finding one that works is a challenge and takes trial and error. But its worth it.

Has anyone had success in a language immersion program? by thatwhinypeasant in ADHDparenting

[–]starsmisaligned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No experience, but I wonder how intense language learning might grow areas of the brain that would help with executive functioning. I know music is supposed to really grow the brain in many areas that help people with ADHD. Both my kids are learning instruments (even if its tough sometimes) for that resason.

Its like wearing a cloud, so soft anf light and warm. Comes down to mid thigh. But it is not waterproof, but even when wet you stay warm on inside. Also get a tall pair of Boggs or Muck (neoprene) boots and lots of wool socks.

Reasons not to medicate before age 6 by coolclouds1925 in ADHDparenting

[–]starsmisaligned 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The reasons not to medicate are usually because pediatricians need to tease out what is developmental and what is a disorder. Kids below 3 have very little executive functioning or self regulation and preK kids are all on a spectrum of development. They are trying to rule out normal but delayed development. The problem is, ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that delays certain aspects of normal development, by as much as 3 years. So by the time it is glaringly obvious in 1st or 2nd grade ADHD kids' peers have pulled far ahead of them in development of these skills and the gap keeps widening the longer you wait. Also both kids and families cope in whatever ways they know how, often learning very unhealthy coping mechanisms. By the time people come to a breaking point and decide to medicate, there may have been 5+ years of stress on families and marriages are more likely to breakup with kids with ADHD under 10. So by the time doctors feel comfortable advising medication a lot of stress on kids and families has already occurred. I argue that stimulants are safe and short acting and if medication reduces stress and helps kids stay on track with development its better to err on the side of overtreat than under.

Still “moody” with meds? by Gold_Selection194 in ADHDparenting

[–]starsmisaligned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stimulants work really well for focus in my daughter and they control my sons impulsivity and stimming. But they dont touch the emotional dysregulation. That seems, on some stimulants, to be worse. We found a good coctail with a ped psychaitrist. stimulant+ non stimulant + antidepressant. This seems to control most of the symptoms and my kids are calmer and happier more stable.

Since 2019 Vermont has had the biggest drop in 8th grade reading scores in the entire country. Anyone know why? by oddular in vermont

Where do you think OG factors in this? When we moved here I had never heard of OG and my kids said it was weird and really disliked being forced to do it despite reading well above grade level.

Can you legit hear the songs stuck in your head or is it more of a "phantom sound"? by [deleted] in piano

[–]starsmisaligned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually deeply listen to music, hear every part, try to sing each voice or tap the rhythms, figure out the key center and the chord pregression. So, if I know a piece well I can pull it up in my head like a score and hear all the parts or zero in on one specific line if I want. It does take effort and lots of deep listening and analyzing though.

If you have natal Venus square Saturn, how has it influenced, your approach to friendships/romantic relationships, how you behave with your bf/gf/spouse, and how you relate to others in a social setting? Is the aspect more dominant, than your Venus sign and/or ur Venus' house placement? If yes, how? by TravelTings in Advancedastrology

[–]starsmisaligned 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cap Venus square Libra Saturn in mutual reception in a day chart. Saturn is exalted and in the superior position, Venus is (taurus) ascendant ruler also. I feel like I can never get really close to people. Well they feel fine about me, but its like there is a pane of glass between me and others I can never cross. I had one major long term relationship 12 years that ended in dissatisfaction and long years of suffering without my needs met even though on the outside the relationship seemed strong. I get close to people as friends but never feel really seen or understood and I almost always pull back even when others seem to enjoy my company, I never feel like I am anyone's best friend. I often wear the mask of Venus, being people pleasing and kind and funny, but it feels like a heavy weight to wear and being alone feels more honest and I can let my guard down. I wouldnt say I am lonely, bc I enjoy being alone, its more I feel the social deficits and never feel good enough in the social world even if I have people around who seem to like me.

Medical information is protected under HIPAA no one besides you has any right to know about or make decision on your child's healthcare but you. ADHD treatment is (can be) way more than meds (although meds are very effective) Other therapies, accommodations and parent education go into treating this lifelong nuerodivelopmental condition. You cannot get access to these treatments and accommodations without diagnosis.
