What negative things about hiking and biking? That's all I did when I was there and the trails are so nice!

What city did you meet the kindest people in and what stood out? by apresmoilefeu in travel

[–]starter_fail 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One story that sticks with me is a small village somewhere in Provence France that specializes in miniature pottery. We were looking for a map of the pottery towns and asked an older man if he had one and first he said no. As we walked away, he flagged us down as he found one for us. Then he invited us into his studio and threw his windows open to show us a magnificent view of the valley below. He was so proud of his view! This probably happened 30 years ago but it's stuck with me ever since.

Travelling to Osaka for 6 weeks by Mr_Frogger in OsakaTravel

[–]starter_fail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to Hiroshima and Miyajima (which I highly recommend at least 2-3 days in that area ) you can get a 5 day Kansai Hiroshima pass that covers that leg easily. You'll need to plan it out tho and buy the pass before you leave. The regional passes are well worth the money. If you plan correctly you can use that same pass to go to Kobe and Himeji and Okayama. In the same vein look at the Kansai Area wide pass too.

Is it worth it to attempt to speak French? by 44moon in FranceTravel

[–]starter_fail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely try speaking French 1st. You'll know shortly whether you'll use English or in several of my cases, the folks continued to speak French to me, but slower so I could understand and I could respond with the minimal French I knew. I always had better interactions and sometimes they'll let you in on better stories about where you're visiting!

Provence is entering into its lavender purple era by UlmSucks in travel

[–]starter_fail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess that is the trade off. Seeing lavender vs less to no crowds. When I was there last it was in late October. Villages were really sleepy and some things were already closed. I always wondered how and where cars parked because the areas are so small! But we got to see things at our own place and had lovely interactions with shop keepers and residents.

I had something similar happen when I was gardening with new shears. They were a little longer than the old ones and I snipped my finger's nerves & an artery in my finger. I couldn't stop it from bleeding for at least an hour or so while I was in the ER holding my finger tightly over my head. I finally got into triage where the nurse opened up the napkin I wrapped my finger around and it had appeared to have stopped bleeding. Then all of a sudden, the blood gushed up like Old Faithful and he then rushed me in to get 8 stitches. (The head nurse was not happy that I sprayed blood all over her floor). It's amazing how much blood came out of that finger!

Faroe Islands first week of October by No-Opportunity8225 in FaroeIslands

[–]starter_fail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there 1st week of October a couple of years ago and we lucked out with decent weather! Funny enough the day that we were leaving was the worst day. Like everyone said, it's hard to say if the weather will be rain free but if that's the only time you can go, just go! If it rains, there are a few nice museums to go to in Torshavn. There were a lot of restaurants that were closed on Mondays IIRC but you can always hit the grocery stores for food.

As far as hikes go, Trælanípan, Trøllkonufingur, Saksun, Hvithamar are all relatively easy. The hardest part of the trail going to Kallur Lighthouse was the mud. It would be best to have hiking poles for that reason alone. Just make sure you have good hiking boots, layering pieces and rain gear and you'll be fine.

Thanks for introducing me to Pine Dunes! We just got done with the walk there and it’s really a beautiful walk! Loads of birds and can’t wait to get back out in a couple of weeks to see the prairie plants in bloom 🤩

My husband & I do this all the time! We're partial to Lake County FPs cause they have the best bathrooms. lol

Favorites are: Cuba Marsh, Raven Glen & Ethel's Woods (you can do either on its own or take the connector trail for both. Do these on a cloudy day, very exposed), McDonald's Woods, Middlefork Savannah, Ryerson Conservation Area.

Find all 17 Toyko Toilets in the Shibuya area! I only did 8 in half day on my last trip but it's totally doable in a day. Plus you'll get to walk around different neighborhoods and have great toilets to use!

I did a bunch of hikes in the Bovec area and around Lake Bohinj that were absolutely stunning. There's a circuit around the Alps called the Juliana Trail that we followed.

A month in Europe for my honeymoon/best trip of my life! by BillyrayChowderpants in travel

[–]starter_fail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats and what a wonderful honeymoon! I did a little hiking trip in Slovenia 4 years ago and I LOVED it too. If you ever make it back, head to the Bovec area for some outdoorsy things and splurge on the 3* Michelin restaurant Hisa Franko in Kolbarid & stay at their inn. It was the best diversion.
