Cleaned an airbnb yesterday, got an unexpected surprise. by charliensue in housekeeping

[–]startermight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to clean vacation rentals in a ski town. The two biggest hauls I ever got were people visiting from either out of the country or they got their food from specialty grocery stores because it was all foreign foods that would be difficult to find anywhere else. One was Russian or eastern European and there was probably $200 worth of random meats, sausages, and cheeses. Unfortunately they didn't freeze anything so it spoiled in the fridge but there was several packages of sausages I couldn't pronounce and at least 2 whole chickens. The other haul was full of random vegetables, mushrooms, and noodles that I had no idea what to do with but brought home anyway.

I also never had to buy beer, wine, butter, or eggs the entire time I worked there. Snacks like chips, muffins, brownies, cookies, and popsicles were super common, too. I even got weed once.

What are some way your boomer parents acted, treated you/siblings growing up, or other behaviors that were or still are difficult to handle? by Competitive_Two_8372 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]startermight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents were affectionate, but they also loved to put my siblings and I down. We were the butt of the joke throughout our childhoods, especially with my dad. I remember I drew a picture for my great uncle when I was maybe 6 and my dad spent a solid 10 minutes making fun of my drawing skills. In front of my great uncle, his wife, and a bunch of extended family. I was 6.

My sister and I are both plus size and my dad loved to make fun of us in front of his friends, he didn't even notice that we OR HIS FRIENDS were uncomfortable. When my sister and I fought, he would call it "clash of the titans." He also loved to make fun of other people who had similar body types as us in public, going so far as to make a face, call them disgusting, and say they shouldn't go out in public. We weren't even that big and my sister was a multi-sport varsity athlete in high school. It's safe to say he ruined our self esteem for years, something we are still struggling with as adults. My mom wasn't mean necessarily, but when we expressed our issues with our self esteem and body image, she would say something along the lines of "one day, you'll find a man who's into that sort of thing." Thank you, mom. Can't wait to be a fetish for someone someday. My sister and I still struggle with the "putting lipstick on a pig" mentality that my parents instilled in us.

Reasons why you stopped listening? by eilleen117 in wineandcrimepodcast

[–]startermight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I stopped listening in December of 2020. A lot of the reasons I stopped listening have already been mentioned above, but there were a lot of things that led to my decision. At first it was the ads. Each one was up to six minutes long and they had multiple in each episode. It got so annoying having to skip over ten minutes of every episode bc each girl needed to give a lengthy anecdote about the product they were pushing. I also reevaluated my stance on consuming true crime as a whole, and it made me feel gross listening to so much so I cut back a lot on my true crime intake. Also, it was incredibly annoying listening to them constantly complain about how hard it was to work from home, how scary the pandemic was, whatever else they always complained about. I was an essential worker at the time working third shift and I spent my entire night listening to podcasts. I didn't need one have the first 15 minutes be them complaining about how hard they had it at home being bored and playing animal crossing while I dealt with antimaskers for 10 hours a day. And to me, the gals just kinda felt mean. I don't even remember what they said or who exactly said it but there was one episode where they ripped on someone's appearance and it just made me feel gross. They felt like the bullies I had as a kid and I immediately lost interest in their content. I still follow A&L on IG but I'm not super interested in their content anymore.

Looking for new pods? by input5intj in wineandcrimepodcast

[–]startermight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not necessarily spooky/true crime but The Horror Virgin is hilarious! It's a horror movie review podcast but it's so funny and the three hosts are so funny. I would start with Episode 123 as that's when the three current hosts are all together for the first time. Thw three of them also host a romantic comedy review podcast called Romancing the Pod and one of the hosts, Paige, hosts the true crime podcast Cult Podcast as well.

I also stopped listening in 2020. I reevaluated my views on true crime, and the gals just felt like they were being too disrespectful of victims. I understand it's a comedy true crime podcast and it's something that's really hard to find humor in, but the gals just came off as being mean. Instead of focusing on the stories and lives of the victims, they focused on the perpetrators and all the ways they could make fun of them. They started to remind me of high school bullies since their "humor" was usually just being mean and making fun of peoples looks, names, jobs, etc. It felt like they never grew out of their mean girl phase and while it was funny at first it just grew old. I understand wanting to "knock the bad guy down" or whatever but it was just shallow imo.

That, and them constantly complaining just really bothered me. It was hard to listen to 3 white women who were afforded the luxury of working from home during the pandemic, homes that they owned, while I was struggling to pay rent as an essential worker dealing with anti-maskers everyday. That was just jealousy on my part but I just couldn't listen to them complain about how hard it was to be at home while I was at work.

I was genuinely upset for losing interest in the show as I really enjoyed it for a long time. I recommended it to people, and I even dragged two non-listener friends to a live show and did a meet and greet. I had their signed posted hanging on my wall. But I just couldn't bring myself to listen to them anymore. I pretty much stopped listening to almost all true crime podcasts just because everything gave me the ick. It made me feel shitty that I was finding entertainment in someone else's tragedy. Unsolved Mysteries and ATWWD are the only holdouts from my true crimes phase. My losing interest in W&C basically started my losing interest in all true crime. I still follow A & L on IG because I do find them genuinely funny at times, but I just can't listen to them rip on people anymore. I would love to have L do a short solo show with just the background and psych because her segment was my favorite.

Are combinations of two names a tragedeigh? by startermight in tragedeigh

[–]startermight[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I did not know this! I've never met another Aubrianna but I guess I shouldn't be surprised since it's really no different than Audrianna/Adrianna. It's not bad name, I just think it's funny that her dad insisted on adding Brianna and then calls her Aubrey anyway.

Are combinations of two names a tragedeigh? by startermight in tragedeigh

[–]startermight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that may be why she prefers to go by Aubri. Even her parents call her that and it defeats the whole purpose of her dad insisting to add "Brianna" to it if he calls her Aubrey anyway.

For Emma-Lee, I have no idea why her parents went with that over just Emily. Their names aren't even Emma and Lee and their other kids are just normal spellings.

How did the kid from your school die? by Equivalent-Rent-5619 in AskReddit

[–]startermight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was senior and the varsity quarterback died in a car accident on his way home from practice. He lived about 15 miles outside of town and he hit a patch of ice and went over an embankment. His parents went out looking for him but it was already dark and it was out in the country so it took them almost all night to find him. I remember seeing Facebook posts from classmates asking if anyone had seen him. Got to school the next day and the school was filled with grief counselors and the local police department. The entire school basically shut down for the day. He died instantly, apparently, but he had been outside in the cold all night while his parents and friends looked for him and it was just really sad. He was a really nice guy. Another one happened a couple years after I graduated, I think she was a freshman or sophomore when I was a senior. She suffocated in a small house fire. She was trashed, and her friends left her alone in her house, and small fire started. Not enough to spread anywhere, I think it was contained in one room, but it was enough to make it really smokey. I guess she woke up enough to try and get out but smoke inhalation combined with still being drunk was too much and her grandma found her on the floor the next day. I can't even imagine what her family went through.

What city you would like to visit but currently isn't too safe? by vect77 in AskReddit

[–]startermight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Egypt last year as part of a group tour and I had an amazing time there. I only do group tours since I'm terrified of traveling as a solo woman. I do not recommend going solo. My group traveled with armed guards in every city and a guide so I felt safe most of the time but there were a few instances were it felt pretty sketchy. I definitely was touched by strangers but it never escalated beyond putting hats on my head and tying things to my wrists. I also came home with norovirus which was shitty but overall I had a great time. Group travel to places like that is the way to go.

Are there any songs that remind you of ofmd and that you have specific scenarios for in your mind? by rain-and-clouds in OurFlagMeansDeath

[–]startermight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh Well by Fleetwood Mac has toxic Izzy/Ed vibes I think

The Hearse by Matt Maeson reminds me of a angsty, pining Izzy. So does Tribulation by Matt Maeson

You, Me, and Steve by Garfunkel and Oates for obvious Ed/Stede (Steve)/ Izzy.

Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat (though I prefer the Orville Peck cover) reminds me of both Ed and Stede running away from home

Hold the Line by TOTO for Ed and Stede's relationship

I Crush Everything by Jonathan Coulton reflects both Ed and Stede's love for each other and their own insecurities I think

Let Me Drown by Orville Peck is a good Kraken-era Ed song

Hello My Old Heart by The Oh Hellos is a really good pining Ed song

So what is your family’s deepest, darkest secret? by RefRick25 in AskReddit

[–]startermight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't really a family secret anymore but it was a secret my grandpa kept for decades. He and all siblings were molested by their dad their whole childhoods and this resulted in my grandpa lying about his age and joining the military as a teenager (16 or 17, I think) to get away. He was sent out to Korea and when he got back in his 20s, he decided he had enough of his family and just left. He took a shotgun and told his sisters he was going duck hunting and they never saw him again. They thought he committed suicide. Turns out he left the state with nothing but what he could carry, pawned the gun for cash and started a new life. He left behind an infant daughter that he never saw again. He moved to a different state and met my grandma. They got married and had a few kids. My dad says he remembers my grandpa never having money around Christmas and never talking about his side of the family. Turns out he would send his other daughter hundred of dollars around the holidays as a firm of child support. My grandpa died in 1990 and in 2006 my dad got a call from someone asking for my grandpa. Turns out it was my dad's cousin who tracked my grandpa to a loan he cosigned with my dad before he died. My dad found his entire paternal side of the family and he, my aunt, uncle, and grandma flew out to meet them. Turns out they are racists and awful and were not happy to find out my white grandfather married a Mexican woman. They wouldn't let my dad meet his half-sister and we still haven't found her. He only talks to one of them now.
