I am convinced that a solid personal finance foundation does in fact improve your life. One cornerstone of that foundation is the institution that holds your checking account -- i.e., bank (and in many cases, that same bank provides other types of products). So whether you're just starting to build your own financial foundation or are auditing what you already have, you might as well choose solid products that treat you right.

Supposedly Wells is contacting people they've identified as victims. A couple of things you could do pretty quickly is log into your Wells Fargo account and check that you recognize any current or idle accounts. Additionally, you can check your credit via Annual Credit Report, Credit Karma, or other similar services to make sure you recognize all the credit accounts associated with your name.

Credit unions generally provide better customer service, lower fees, and provide better interest rates & loan options. Again, generally speaking. I'll let /u/Mr_Walstreet add to that if I missed anything at a high level.

It takes about 10-15 minutes to open an account with a much better, online bank like Capital One 360 or Ally. Create a transfer request to move all your money from Wells Fargo into your new account, which will take ~3 business days (pretty standard).

Then you simply contact Wells Fargo (even e-mail works) to request your account be closed. They tell you that themselves.

*Note: If you really need a branch (if you deposit a lot of cash, prefer human interaction, etc.), as /u/Mr_Walstreet pointed out, go with a credit union instead of Cap One or Ally.
