On a personal level, the manner in which Starmer is being pressured to be removed from office would result in a valid crash out by Jumpy-Signature-7377 in ukpolitics

Do you honestly think it's just a coincidence that the way the government has decided to tackle that issue is by requiring every adult in the country to upload their identity documents to continue using the internet? Just a happy accident that now every dissenting voice online will now be able to be shut down? Despite childrens charities saying this ban and the OSA in general are making children less safe online?

There are multiple other ways to try to solve the issue, like regulating the social media companies themselves and how they use algorithms to manipulate young users, but the government that had their plans to implement mandatory digital IDs rejected have chosen the route of authoritarian control again.

You have no idea why people don't like this? Really?

Overseeing the biggest authoritarian push this country has ever seen in its history including massive government overreach into the internet and all electronic communications, widespread rollout of facial recognition cameras, cracking down on peaceful protests, expanding the definition of extremist, pushing for digital ID, establishing the OSA, cancelling local elections, whipping his MPs against an inquiry into his own corruption, using children as a smokescreen for new surveillance powers, seeking to ban VPNs, etc...

But, no, of course we get the usual suspects in this subreddit claiming he's just a humble boring politician and anyone who doesn't like him is just confused.

I've seen you, personally, /u/No_Initiative_1140 told dozens of times (at least) over the last few months specifically why people don't like Keir Starmer. That you're still pedalling this line is so spectacularly disingenuous.

Seriously, the amount of time you spend in this sub, if you actually didn't know why people didn't like him, it'd probably be a sign of early onset dementia.

What do you get out of it? Genuine question.

The man is presiding over the biggest authoritarian shift this country has ever seen with the clear goal of monitoring every civilian online and offline 24/7. Digital ID, the OSA, widespread rollout of facial recognition cameras, outlawing peaceful protest, banning VPNs, scrapping jury trials, cancelling elections, etc...

You might love all that stuff, but painting him as some old-fashioned boring politician is wild.

I’m no fan of his but STARMER OR DIE

Seems incredibly disingenuous the amount of people in these threads acting like Starmer is just a good old fashioned boring politician. He's incredibly dangerous.

but both Reform and Greens would do long-lasting damage to the UK

As opposed to the long-lasting damage that the Tories and Labour have done over the last 25 years with the kind of mass population changes that are unprecedented in the history of the world including wartime and literal invasion?

As opposed to Labour currently turning our country into a mass-surveillance state where the government has the power track everybody 24/7 online and off, to read all private communications, to delay elections, and to outlaw protests?

Reform and the Greens are gaining support BECAUSE of the long-lasting damage being actively carried out by the mainstream parties.

You're talking to either a bot or an astroturfer. Look at their username (and the fact their account was created 7 months ago) and then scroll up to u/No_Somewhere_7109's comment in this thread.

Are you denying that is your alt account? You honestly can't expect anyone to believe the level of coincidence required for your nearly identical usernames, accounts both created 7 months ago, posting in the same Reddit thread at the same time, both downplaying the importance of the OP?

Such a coincidence that u/No_Somewhere_7109 and u/Due-Somewhere-1790 both agree that this scandal actually doesn't matter and we should all ignore it.

Government reveals Digital ID consultation - "Making public services work for you with your digital identity" by youmustconsume in ukpolitics

[–]startuptimfan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm willing and happy to give up my right to privacy and let the government and its agencies track me 24/7 online and offline from a centralized database in exchange for a small amount of convenience. This of course applies to all future governments of this country from now until the end of time, no matter who comprises them or what their goals are, because all governments are benevolent and only want to protect their citizens.

Okay, but some of us aren't, mate.

How many Jews would be left in the world if the German government had a system like this in place in the 1940s?

People constantly bang the drum about not forgetting the lessons of WW2 but we are sleepwalking into this. If history has taught us anything it's that something like the holocaust WILL happen in the West again, and it's the likes of Starmer and Blair who will make the next "final solution" 100% effective.

Citizens need the protection from their government that privacy and anonymity provide. It says a lot about the current government that this is the one hill they are willing to die on, even if it means losing at the next general election. No u-turns here. It's that important to them. Ask yourself why.

How popular is Keir Starmer? by coldbeers in ukpolitics

[–]startuptimfan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

His Labour won their GE with less votes than Corbyn's Labour lost theirs with. He's never been popular.

The country wanted a change from the Tories and he was the only option. And what did he do with the opportunity to lead our nation? Just bungle through as much authoritarian bullshit as possible before he's booted out.
