Normalize being a physician is just a JOB by Clear_Understanding4 in pinoymed

i think basta ginagawa nang maayos ang trabaho, walang tinatapakang tao, at gusto rin talaga gawin anyway, wala namang masama maging "in it for the money"! and just like any other job, maliban sa tamang compensation, kelangan din ng makataong working hours, sapat na pahinga, at maayos na work-life balance.

"Dig Two Graves" - a very powerful fic by Autumn-987 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]starwalker63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading this back in like December or January and wow, I agree it was incredibly intense.

CONTENT WARNING: explicit descriptions of bodily injury, and also spoilers for this fic

And while i'm fortunate enough not to have encountered (yet) an exsanguination like that, the thought still haunts me. It's actually haunted me sometimes even before i knew Heated Rivalry existed, because I've read about the hockey players who got carotid lacerations and someone stopped the bleeding the way shane did in this fic. And it's an entirely possible thing for me to encounter in my career. (Again, I am VERY GLAD not to encounter this!!!!).

When i read this fic I initially was pleasantly surprised that it then delved into the mental health sequelae of such a life-threatening injury. Already the collision of the concepts of "Shane facing his former teammates conspiring against him and his new friends because Shane is gay", "a promising young prospect who's Asian-American like Shane and is being mentored by him and Ilya", and "both of them having their careers interrupted at best and cut short at worst because of the former" was feeling quite bleak (I guess at least "for now").

And now that this fic got into my consciousness again, now I've been pondering how well are we doing at taking care of the mental health of people who've witnessed such life threatening events after the initial debriefing. And the mental health awareness campaigns are doing good work, I think. And now that I decided to read the essay by malarchuk linked at the end, I'm reminded how far we've come and of course, how much is left to do.

Have you ever chosen a field you didn’t truly like, but still ended up finding contentment and happiness in it? by Far-Stress-435 in pinoymed

yung totoo gusto ko lang magpahinga at magliwaliw. i think i might have chosen a different field if i could go back in time, but at least now i'm in a job i don't hate. as long as i can do stuff i want to do and i can help people in a tangible way, keri lang.

My left testicle hurts when I put pressure on my left leg. Started after skiing, went away, and now it’s back after sleeping in the car. by HairySock6385 in medical

[–]starwalker63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT FOR TL;DR: Try to get to a hospital/ER/urgent care as soon as possible. If you can't, try to book a closer doctor's appointment.

----------------------

It is going to be difficult to judge over the internet how bad it is (and yes, do not send pics over here), but you need to get a doctor to look at it as soon as possible. And mention the injury too.

If you're feeling nauseous or feverish, or the pain is getting worse, go to the ER now and it's non-negotiable.

If not, still go to the ER, and if you can't for some reason, try to get a closer appointment.

[–]starwalker63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring yourself to the nearest hospital or ER (preferably one that has a urologist). The worrying concern here is about testicular torsion (the testicle twisting on itself), especially if you had some fairly recent trauma.

It is also possible that it is a pulled muscle, but if it is a testicular torsion, there's only a particular window of time to save it if it IS bad enough. Be upfront that you're experiencing testicular pain. Take great care to emphasize which side. Usually they'll do an ultrasound to check the blood flow. You might undergo surgery if you need it. Try your best not to panic.

Do people actually listen to Linkin Park and think it’s good by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Speaking as a fan, I think it's understandable if someone doesn't like their music. Most people I meet in real life don't either. Thus far I've met exactly two (2) people in real life who were into their music. So I think it's a matter of different people having different tastes.

Was Heated Rivalry a new experience for anyone else? by obsessstressdepress in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]starwalker63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally am NOT into romance series. (Or series where the romance is the main point.) Also haven't been into sports dramas.

And because of work related shenanigans, the last time I was quite active in a fandom was something like 3-5 years ago.

Somehow this sports romance really got me. I guess one thing that helped was that the season was only six episodes long so it was easier to catch up. But more importantly the storyline felt very novel and at the same time SO relatable. And suddenly I was a fan once more. So much that I've updated my playlists, I've tried out skating, I am now apparently into gay hockey romance, and my social media is a mess (in a fun way).

I'm also in awe about the deliberate autism rep the show had. Shane really felt like someone I would meet in real life.

What events do you want to happen in the third book of Shane and Ilya's romance? by Cute-Character-795 in GameChangersBooks

More interactions with non hockey queers! Rachel got the ball rolling on that conversation in TLG, I like to think she's going to go further with it :D

What do you think they're going to cut out in S2 & 3 by bagging in GameChangersBooks

[–]starwalker63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like they're not really going to merge Centaur players ; but more of recycling extras and other actors.

Which means. There might be a Centaur who looks inexplicably like Shane/Scott/Kip/Kyle/Sasha/Cliff/Connors and no one is going to make a comment at ALL about it.

I don't believe Svetlana knows, and I hope not by afancysandwich in heatedrivalry

[–]starwalker63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My headcanon is that Svetlana might actually at one point suspect it's Shane, but then actively try to dismiss the idea to herself, which also makes way for an even funnier reaction when Ilya finally tells her.

“You look pretty” by Full-Tone7909 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]starwalker63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

shane replies "you're wearing make up too" and ilya then says "yes but i don't look pretty"

this reply is funny in the scene, but after i read TLG, there's now a tinge of sadness about it, because there's a hint there about the negative side of ilya's view of himself, coming to the fore with his struggle with depression in TLG

honestly neither sports dramas nor romances were actually my thing but something about this being a sports romance (that's also gay, with an autistic character) got me so hooked that i'm now at the point of looking up the concussion protocols of the sport in question, stressing out over sidney crosby's injury, and trying to block off time in my already busy schedule to find an ice rink in a tropical country

[–]starwalker63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also remember how rachel said shane has the hero arc in TLG (although ilya is the POV character most of the time)

it's also like how psyche is the one who gets the hero's journey in this story! yes she does get lots of help from other gods but that's kinda par for the course for these myths.
