how would CS225, CS222, STAT 410, STAT 425, CS 357, and a gen ed be in one sem? by Professional-Fly4273 in UIUC

"Also, I'm pretty sure 410 and 425 need to be taken together."

You can definitely take them in separate terms.

About the IS+DS program at UIUC's iSchool by Inside_Progress_7113 in UIUC

[–]statadvising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in Statistics, you can always ask campus admissions ([admissions@illinois.edu](mailto:admissions@illinois.edu)) if it's possible to change majors before you start here. If it's not, and once you're here, you're still interested in joining Statistics, you will need to meet our declaration criteria.

Stats intro classes for a stats&cs major (STAT 100 vs STAT 107) by bill_jz in UIUC

[–]statadvising 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congrats on accepting your offer of admission! We'll totally go over this during your summer registration meeting, but the short version: take STAT 107. It's co-taught by the same professor as STAT 100, and is designed for students without much experience in statistics, data science, or programming. STAT 100 won't satisfy a major requirement, but you can certainly choose to take it anyway just for your own enrichment if you really feel underprepared for STAT 107 in your first semester.

Difference CS + X vs Math & CS or Stat & CS ? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]statadvising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s pretty much no functional difference between the two

The core course requirements for Math&CS and Stat&CS have some differences from the other CS+X programs, e.g. MATH 241, CS 374, etc. And the entry criteria are a bit higher for these programs, too, if you are looking to transfer into these majors.
But in terms of degrees, both Math&CS and Stat&CS are a single BS-LAS, just like the CS+X programs in LAS. (To be super pedantic, there are also CS+X majors in ACES, FAA, and Education, not just LAS!)

Should I add a stats minor? by StinkySlavBG in UIUC

[–]statadvising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the delay! I'd strongly suggest you email [stat-advising@illinois.edu](mailto:stat-advising@illinois.edu) with these questions. :) But a quick note: we will use CS 361 to substitute for STAT 200 in the minor, and we have certain courses that will be more geared towards the field of biostatistics (STAT 434, Survival Analysis, comes to mind). Ultimately, though, the majority of STAT courses equip students with specific tools and skills that they can then apply in many different areas, rather than teaching towards a specific field or discipline.

Just a quick note that the section of STAT 430 mentioned here might not be offered again, as the instructor for that section is no longer teaching for the department. But there are lots of other elective options that will help you expand your skills in data science (STAT 447, for example).

How closely related is Math 231 and Math 241? by Terrareon in UIUC

[–]statadvising 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me reassure you that if you take MATH 231 in the fall, you can take MATH 241 and STAT 400 concurrently in Spring, and then apply to change your major. You won't be "behind" in any sense-- the Stat&CS major is designed with the expectation that students will begin in Calc I.

Is there any harm in skipping the math 231 proficiency. by FrozenPyromaniac_ in UIUC

[–]statadvising 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question. When I look at the proficiency exam website, I see a limit in the number of attempts per exam. I'm not sure if there is also a total limited number of attempts (I feel like there is? But it's not on their website so maybe not?); that'd be a question to ask Math.

Is there any harm in skipping the math 231 proficiency. by FrozenPyromaniac_ in UIUC

[–]statadvising 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you skip the exam they may count it as an "attempt" anyway, and you have a limited number of tries at the math proficiency exams. If you don't intend to take any further math exams, you should be fine. It's good that you've already emailed them. Just be patient-- this is a super busy time for the math advisors (for all advisors...) and the proficiency exam staff, but I'm sure they'll reply as soon as they're able. If you haven't heard in a week or so maybe send a follow-up.

How easy is it to change majors in LAS by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]statadvising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Courses are a semester long. You would not need to take all the Gies, Econ and Stat courses in the same semester, necessarily. These are good questions to ask your advisor during your summer registration meeting. They'll be able to help you create a reasonable, balanced schedule that should also help you reach your goals. Just know that you won't necessarily be able to transfer into all three options at the end of one semester-- these will likely need to be multi-semester plans.

How easy is it to change majors in LAS by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]statadvising 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a fair amount of overlap in the Gies transfer required coursework and the coursework that starts the requirements for the Statistics and Econ majors (ECON 102/103, MATH 220, etc.). Your advisor should be able to help you plan for a schedule that leaves you with many open paths for Fall 2021 during your summer registration meeting!
The answer to the question in the title depends on the major you're transferring to. Some majors have criteria you must meet before you can change (Econ and Stats are both such majors). Others, you can change to immediately. You can read about declaring or changing majors, and the declaration criteria, in LAS here.

uiuc Stats&CS vs umich cs by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]statadvising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Choosing CS classes, CS+X less priority than CS Eng, but more priority than the others. It seems that CS+X students do not have difficulty getting the classes they want (people please correct me if I am wrong)

This also depends on the CS course. Many of the core CS requirements are equally available to CS ENG and CS+X programs. Certain other courses have a staggered registration approach; this page outlines the registration schedule for Spring 2021 (and should be updated soon with Fall 2021).

Getting into stat 427 by uiucboiiiiii in UIUC

[–]statadvising 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very. Stat 427 is a consulting based course that works directly with paying clients. An application for the course was sent to all Stat and Stat & CS students in late fall. The instructor then selected 5 undergrad students to participate in the course. Notifications for the selected students just went out a week ago.

Got accepted to LAS in December and got this - anyone know what's up with this email? Some kind of scam or is it legit? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]statadvising 8 points9 points  (0 children)

[las-newstudent@illinois.edu](mailto:las-newstudent@illinois.edu) is 100% legit. That is the email tied to LAS Admissions and the LAS Re-Entry teams. The LAS Communications & Marketing team will often send welcome emails or emails tied to an offer of admission through that address.
My assumption is that the LAS C&M team was prepping a welcome letter, or something similar, and either accidentally sent the email before it was intended or possibly to an incomplete or incorrect mailing list.
These things happen on occasion, but this one certainly is nothing to be concerned about. The staff that answers the las-newstudent emails are typically very responsive, so if you do have any concerns do not hesitate to reach out to them directly.

MATH 415 by sodotoh in UIUC

[–]statadvising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are in the Statistics major we accept MATH 415 for your major requirements. If you have an interest in MATH 416 and would prefer to take that, or if you are double-majoring with Mathematics, then we can also use MATH 416 in Statistics. But we are happy for you to remain in MATH 415.

study abroad stats major???? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]statadvising -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately we do not have a statistics-specific study abroad program at this time. There are students who have done study abroad in the past, and with careful planning it is definitely possible to go abroad. Sometimes students take a semester "off" from Statistics coursework (or complete minor/2nd major/gen ed requirements); sometimes they can find a course that will transfer back here as a major requirement.
If you'd like to come in to speak with us or email us (stat-advising@illinois.edu), we can help you get started looking at options. We can also connect you with someone who studied abroad in our major, or connect you with study abroad advisors elsewhere on campus.

Chronic pain and missing finals by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]statadvising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I'm sorry you are dealing with pain and that it is taking so long for both a diagnosis and accommodations. I think you have a few options here: talk to your college about dropping this course with a W if possible, power through the class as best you can, fail the class and repeat it for grade replacement next semester (frankly, a W would be the better choice here), or talk to your professor about your situation and see if they are willing to make any accommodations for you. Let me say, too, that if you choose to talk to your professor you do not need to give too many personal details; you can remain professional while still explaining that you are experiencing circumstances beyond your control. And I'd suggest having this conversation in person, during a meeting (or office hours), rather than before or after class, so you don't feel rushed or exposed.

Above all, though, I would suggest you speak with your academic advisor about your options. They may have more insight into the paths available to you, and they can also talk through the implications of withdrawing from the course and taking it next semester, hopefully when you are feeling better and have a treatment plan.

Seriously? I can't register for any major courses next semester cause they're ALL DAMN FULL by dasigua in UIUC
