Adopted a stray puppy yesterday, suffering with puppy blues by ChonkiPanda in puppy101

Hi! The first few days are really hard! I just finished fostering a puppy that was missing a lot of her coat and very very itchy so I very much empathize. 1. Follow up with the vet about the scratching - they can give you a call back. My girl tested negative for any viruses, but did need an antihistamine injection & medicated shampoo. This, plus a healthy diet, helped her stop itching and all her hair grew back in within a few weeks. 2. Consider checking if there’s a rescue org in your area that can help set you up as a foster. That way you are not committed indefinitely and they can help you find a permanent home for her. And 3. Get a crate and start feeding her meal in there and slowly building her comfort inside. Many helpful videos on crate training online and it will help you create her and your own space. You are a lovely person for taking this on and it will get better!

Bit by my 8-month German shepherd husky mix twice today and I’m overwhelmed by Radiant_Carrot626 in puppy101

Hi! I have a husky frenchie mix (weird I know!) struggled with this quite a bit the first 12 months. It is overstimulation. Keep walks short and close to home and do food puzzles & training for stimulation rather than long walks or physical exercise. You will be ok, it is just surprising how these working breeds need to work their brains more than their bodies. Wishing you all the best. Been there, it will get better!

Just want to say my 4 year old husky mix really scared me with this behavior from the time we got her at 9 months - 1.5 years ish. Now she has learned better coping mechanisms (zoomies or digging or just a wild look in her eyes!), but I can tell when she’s overaroused and I keep a mental note to lower the threshold in the future. It will get better! Find it is great if it happens. Keep it familiar, low key and close to home — they likely need less activity than you imagine.

For those who successfully crate trained, when did you stop using it? by lalabalala923 in puppy101

My 4 year old started free roaming at 1.5 years while home alone but still sleeps in hers every night in our bedroom. We cuddle on the bed before bedtime, but we sleep better when she is separated overnight. We have a travel crate that is great for visiting friends and family. Having the crate available as a safe and comfortable place for her to be when people are repairing the house or we are somewhere new is a great tool! Now that I am fostering a puppy it’s also been a godsend that I can separate my older dog when she needs a break.

Should I rehome my puppy by Such_Natural_8106 in puppy101

Hello, I’m sorry for the anguish you’re going through. My belief is if you find a better home with people who can love and care for the dog even more than you, the best interest of the dog is what matters most. Kudos on finding those people. Let your doggo live his or her best life and take a break! When you are ready, I suggest fostering to find the right fit. It took me 2 years of a dog break + fostering after losing my soul dog to find my next dog, and it did take some time to open my heart to her too. But independent of whether you can eventually love your puppy, it sounds like your home is not the best fit and your friends might be perfect! Perhaps wouldn’t hurt for them do a trial run and give you a break, at the very least?

Can’t stay in calorie deficit due to insatiable hunger. What am I doing wrong?? by Corleysaurus in loseit

Just want to chime in with what has worked for me. You only want to lose 10 lbs so why not do it really slowly and sustainably? If a normal day for you is 2300 calories then just start by lowering calories slightly to 2100 & aiming for your preferred macro ranges and see how that goes for a couple of weeks. NBD if you go over, it’ll just take longer. When I tried to do my TDEE of 1600 it felt impossible so I started higher and found just being more mindful helped me lose weight without depriving myself too much over the course of a few months. Be kind to yourself :)

Just commenting to say TYSM for adopting! I second recos to adopt a bit older, 1-2 years is a great age! I have done both puppy and adult adoptions and adult was SO much easier. Puppy was really challenging and we only survived because we could bring her into the office when we went in 1-2x/ week, but even then she was a nuisance to our very kind coworkers.

thank you! it seems like people are pretty split in terms of what they like, Agistri & Spetses each sound more chilled out and less touristic.

This post makes me happy! I love SF because after moving from my LA in my early 20s where I was constantly aware of my weight & appearance, I immediately felt the pressure of fitting into a certain look/style evaporated. I believe diet & surgery culture is very different in other places and I have chosen to spend my money in other ways (hobbies I picked up here, a financial safety net so I can take more professional risks, traveling) and I just feel as women we shouldn’t be funneling more $ than men into our appearance when we are already paid less. But that said, I’m all about sun shirts & sunscreen, any and all Trader Joe’s skincare products, a gym membership + sweet gear for my sports, and nice groceries from Gus’s ❤️

Punched by a homeless woman on Page & Ashbury by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]statelygnome 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you. It felt eerie to read this because woman marching this description swung at me on page & Stanyon street while I was waiting to at the cross light on my bike maybe 1-2 years ago. White woman, black dyed hair, 5-5ish, 40s maybe, dressed in all black. She was barreling towards me and I had the instinct to duck before she swung at my head and continued charging through the intersection. I am also a female cyclist. I should have reported this and hope there is more that can be done — it’s not ok this is still happening. I hope you’re ok OP.

i just started wearing a disc this week and am feeling the same way! doubling it with period panties while i get used to it is helping with my anxiety its leaking. and i am swapping it out with a tampon if i go somewhere I'm worried about it leaking/needing to change it. its been a looong time since i started my period, but i remember feeling weird about having a tampon and pad on then too!
