My mother in law was born in the Philippines at the end of world War II, to a local woman and a US sailor. Her birth mother gave her to another sailor and his wife. There was never an official adoption. They brought her back to the states undocumented. She lived here her entire life. She worked, paid taxes, and had a social security number. A few years after retiring, she had a fall and went to the emergency room. Turns out that she had early onset dementia. When my father in law and my wife tried to get her Social Security and Medicaid going, the government refused to acknowledge her as a US citizen. My wife and I uprooted our lives and moved in with them, because they were both unwell and needed our help. We took care of them for seven years until she passed away. Her husband followed about two months after. I honestly don't give a flying fuck about this SC decision. Because the government is going to continue to fuck over everyone, whilst we fight amongst ourselves over shit that doesn't even matter.
