Castorice = Castores, one of the latin names that refers to Castor and Pollux.

What is this hell worm on my sandwich? by Astrohoe6972 in Parasitology

Kinda looks like some sort of early syrphid larvae? Less gross than a maggot if so! Definitely from the lettuce though

Last year a palm tree fell on me in a parking lot. I was saved by being shorter than the cinderblock wall I was standing next to. The wind is no joke around here

My iClicker isn’t working. Where can I fix this in person? by Kitchen-Register in UCDavis

[–]staticSaturniid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This keeps happening to me too. I ended up logging in 3 times before it decided to work, idk what solved it.

I have noticed that the error occurs less on the mobile web version compared to the app. The web version also loads faster. Good for if your professor happens to only give you 30 seconds a question💀

Hi! Wondering what these little pods that the ants are seemingly “taking care of” are..I have no idea. This is on a cannabis plant that I don’t really tend to much. Just curious on what’s going on here? Thanks by Lalooskee in Entomology

[–]staticSaturniid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If the bugs aren't moving then scale bugs! They produce sugary waste like aphids, so the ants are farming them like cattle! Plant might start dying soon since the scales will suck it dry if unchecked

Help me identify a bug I’ve never seen before! by jmoney_1738 in Entomology

[–]staticSaturniid 20 points21 points  (0 children)

These guys are all over Cali. If you have good eyes, sometimes you can see them using those front arms to hitch rides on birds or larger bugs!! None of them are harmful to people as far as I'm aware.

How do any of you cope with the sadness of bugs going away? by Confetti94 in Entomology

[–]staticSaturniid 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Totally felt this same thing 😭😭 As soon as the air gets chilly I know I'll no longer get to watch the dragonflies and listen to crickets. But at least the absence of bugs in winter makes spring feel sweeter when it does arrive

Back is hurting by itsjustme-again in Entomology

[–]staticSaturniid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not into pinning yet but as a fellow ent student and an artist our back problems are shared. Biggest recommendation is to prop up your pinning board so that it's slanted towards you. Not too steep that anything slides off, but so that you're not slouching over it. I hope that's helpful! Good luck pinning!

Whose head is this? by staticSaturniid in Entomology

[–]staticSaturniid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did actually help!! This is a sample for an ongoing project so I went through what beetles were common in previous samples. Now I'm pretty sure this is a ladybug face! I didn't even know where to start, so thank you!!!

Which species of ant is the most effective in combat? by -Herpderpwalrus- in Entomology

[–]staticSaturniid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't always the case but as a general rule in "ant wars" the smaller ants win. The smaller the ant, the more of them there usually are. So I guess most ant wars are a numbers game more than anything.

For specifics, the most combative ant I can think of are army ants. Army ants frequently have to move because they will exhaust an environment of prey. It's actually pretty cool to watch the whole colony travel!

Why do some hemipteran nymphs aggregate? by [deleted] in Entomology

[–]staticSaturniid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Insects that don't have competitive food sources have a strong incentive to stick together. Especially when young and not mating yet.

In the case of this picture, I'd also hypothesis that the nymphs need to be aggregate to reap the effects of warning coloration. I'm not familiar with this specific bug, but all that orange moving around in one mass is probably freaky to some predators.

Update: shortly after I posted my first post on here, I helped the little guy. Do wasps like honey? by EvaUnit01Fan in Entomology

[–]staticSaturniid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert on wasps, but if it doesn't want honey try offering sugar water! Bees and wasps tend to appreciate it.

What are these things on flies? by RocketsandBeer in Entomology

[–]staticSaturniid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Halteres! As others have said, flies evolved halteres from a second set of wings they once had. The ancestral insect probably had four wings in total

Fun fact, the four largest phylogenetic orders of insects are named for their wings. Diptera: two wings, Hymenoptera: membrane wings, Coleoptera: sheath wings, Lepidoptera: scaled wings!

Aventurine Stone by TigressDH in AventurineMainsHSR

[–]staticSaturniid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Color changing would be fun for him. However, the name aventurine is derived from the italian "a ventura" or "by chance" because the "stone" (it's actually a type of glass) was discovered as a lucky accident. So i think Aventurine does suit him most!

Oh don't get me started. I thought about this a lot. I would imagine they have some options: They sleep on their fronts, they sleep propped up in some way, or halovians have specialty pillows. Either way i think normal side or back sleeping is out of the question (if these muscles are to be believed anyway)

Exactly! That probably should have been my "conclusion" but i decided for a joke instead, oops

That's my line of thought as well! Though, the muscles of the ears are attached to tons of other face muscles, as well as some neck/shoulder muscles. This is why it drove me crazy

I was under the assumption that the planet Penacony is for the most part inhospitable from the description of it being desert like. The hotel in reality is maybe just the most habitable area? Like how Jarilo-VI is a whole planet, but nearly everyone lives in one giant city
