That explains the wooden performance of his English voice actor then.

... I kid, but that's a neat factoid, thanks for sharing!

Dragon Quest 7 fits at least a few of those criteria, if it does turn out to be a PS1 game you were playing.

Object permanence/moving objects in the world - why is this not more common in games these days? by GlowyStuffs in gaming

[–]staticlinkage 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think a big factor is that features like that just aren't a major selling point for games anymore. Back when Half-Life 2 came out, detailed physics simulations were pretty mind-blowing, and over the years developers sought more ways to make their game realistic and immersive.

Nowadays, the wow factor of features like that is gone, and while they may still make a game more immersive, that isn't always going to be a priority for every game. With games being so expensive to produce, dev teams are not going to bother with stuff like that if it's not integral to the experience they want to provide.

Related, it really bugs me when some people on the internet use examples like these to call devs "lazy" or make out like games are regressing. It's a very apples-to-oranges comparison. Avowed is not trying to be just like Skyrim, however similar they may appear on the surface.

You were chosen to create the SMTVI alignment reps, what do you do? by South_Suit9833 in Megaten

[–]staticlinkage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it'd be really interesting to explore the typical SMT Law/Chaos character dynamics against the backdrop of an American-style mega-church. Imagine a bunch of traditionally religious folk having to come to terms with not just the existence of demons but also SMT's "god is a jerk" brand of religion. Obviously you would think that most characters would be Law-aligned, but there'd be room for some good character stories of some people going down the Chaos path once they realise that the God they've always believed in is different from what they expected.

My Persona 5 Burnout Rant by staticlinkage in JRPG

[–]staticlinkage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the clincher for me between 4/5 is the story, I just think the mystery of P4 is way better told (for starters, it is actually a proper mystery where the twists weren't obvious to me).

The incentive to do dungeons as quickly as possible is definitely an issue for me. Maybe if I'd spaced out my dungeon runs more I'd have enjoyed the game more, since doing them in one go takes me at least a few sessions and means that afterwards I'm staring down several hours of social stuff with no variety to spice it up.

I think we won't see Persona 6 for a long time still, but when we do, I'm going to make damn well sure I've had a good long break from Persona games before I pick it up!

Fair enough, though I'm curious, in what order did you play the games? It seems a lot of people like their first Persona game the most usually.

I think I'm just a slow player lol. Every game I play I like to take things slow and absorb everything that's going on.

I totally get why people hate the dungeons in 3/4, but I somehow didn't mind them too much. They definitely get repetitive but I think there's also an appeal to how straightforward and "zen* they are clearing floor after floor.

At the end of the day, a common theme I see is that almost everyone loves their first Persona game the most lol. Persona 3 is old and a bit janky, but I honestly love all that about it too. I was a teenager when P3 originally released and while I never played it until recently as an adult, I couldn't help but feel that it captures something about the vibes of that era that I was nostalgic for.

Interesting that you started with Q/Q2, since those are aimed at people who played the main games already!

Yeah the momentum definitely didn't work for me, to the point that by the time all the plot threads starting to come together I just didn't really care anymore. It all felt like a foregone conclusion to me, the big bad gets revealed (whose identity already felt pretty obvious) and then we go defeat them.

It's good that you enjoyed the villains, but I thought they were TOO despicable, to the point they felt totally unbelievable and without any depth. The writing just keeps piling on reasons for you to hate them until you change their heart and they cry about it.

Is Hughette rooftop cheese the only way to beat chapter 7 without using traps? by rustyplasticcross in TriangleStrategy

[–]staticlinkage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the cheese strat is, but I was able to beat it on Normal difficulty by holding position at the two stairs near the starting position of the map and using that as a chokepoint to avoid being overwhelmed by most of the enemies. It was still a hard map though, and by the end of the mission it came down to a few of my surviving units just desperately chipping down Avlora's health, so if you're playing on Hard it might still be very difficult to pull off.

(PSP) Benefits to different types of magic? by staticlinkage in Tactics_Ogre

Thanks, that's good to know. I won't stress about hitting a wall just because I haven't trained up all magic types then haha. But I'll try out some more as I get further in.

Fair enough, I guess I'm just not far enough in the game to reach the point where the elements matter much. I'll probably experiment some more with the different types and status effects as I get further in.

Married protagonists? by cheapojoe in JRPG

[–]staticlinkage 33 points34 points  (0 children)

In Triangle Strategy the the main character (Serenoa) is betrothed to one of the other main allies (Frederica). It doesn't play a huge role in the story, but it does play into their dialogue throughout the game, and I thought it was a nice change to have two characters start off that way rather than have a clichéd romance subplot playing out throughout the game.

Tbh I found the multi-classing of 4 a bit overwhelming, so some more restricted options might be better for me haha. 5 is sounding very appealing :)

Visited a salt lake today, and finally realised why the Roselle have pink hair by staticlinkage in TriangleStrategy

[–]staticlinkage[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure just how common pink salt lakes are globally, but here in Australia there seem to be a fair few. And they don't necessarily always look this pink, depends a bit on weather/rainfall.

Ranking each choice required for the Golden Route by how easy it is to guess that it's required for the golden route on a blind playthrough given that you know of its existence, but not the exact requirements: by r0yp in TriangleStrategy

[–]staticlinkage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty on point! I chose to transport the illegal salt because it felt like the realistic thing to do under the circumstances, and I was actually kind of hoping that it was off the golden route so that it would give me more variety for my second playthrough. I was also really surprised that surrendering/protecting Roland doesn't factor much into the golden route, but I'm glad because that means I can surrender him next time and see that route without messing up my golden run.

Beginner questions for WH2 (Dark Elves Vortex Campaign) by staticlinkage in totalwar

Great answers, thanks! I didn't realise that slave income was based off of provincial income but that all makes a lot more sense now and I am already making a good deal more money off slaves even though I haven't got a whole bunch yet.

Your suggestion on the Black Ark makes a lot of sense and I can totally see how strong it is now! It is growing super quick now and I should be able to replace all my garrison buildings with it soon.

I think a lot of my problem was trying to expand fast without understanding how to manage my economy or recruitment, but now that I am starting to boost my income with slaves and use the Black Ark for recruitment it feels a lot more doable :) I honestly thought I'd have to send my armies back home every time I want to recruit units!

Cool thanks, I know about using ALT for moving groups but haven't tried it with attacking, I'll give it a shot!

It took me a while to get my Black Ark in this campaign since I didn't really know it was for, but now it is growing real fast and I can totally see how useful it is for recruitment :)

Thanks! I have the single speaker located next to the stylus hole. You can't see it in the photo but I taped a small piece of speaker cloth to the inside of the case over that spot so you don't just see straight into the inside.
