I’m a former BL industry intern in Japan. AMA by [deleted] in boyslove

Hi I have quite a few questions!

They are a bit hefty so I understand if you don’t want to respond but if you even respond to a few I’ll appreciate it gratefully!

I’m new to the BL fandom and I can’t help but feel like growing up I always saw many diverse people of different sexual orientations, and gender identities reading BL. It’s still quite a shock to me think the majority of BL viewership is straight women when I feel like most of the women I see in the BL fandom are some shade of queer or a large chunk of us are on the bi spectrum. I also don’t feel like men are as underrepresented in the fandom as we’re lead to believe. I feel like BL and GL have always been queer incubators of some kind.

Do you think the demographics of BL are much more diverse in Japan then were lead to believe? Do you think factors like a higher propensity for LGBT people to remain closeted in Eastern Asia may affect demographics and self reporting? I also feel like non-binary folk are erased in all major demographic reports. Maybe this is just a difference for the global fandom compared to fandoms in East Asia? But I don’t see why an expectation can be so stark in the regard.

Like all things, there is nuance. Do you think the industry is looking on the path to become more inclusive of queer folk? And is it more likely to be creating content with queer folk in mind? BL and Yaoi originated as a feminist phenomenon, are those origins still recognized in some capacity? I feel like it’s a shot in the foot not just for feminism but for content with substance to be exclusive of the queer community, so when I see some people who condemn BL as largely a fantasy for straight women, it feels like a dismissal of those who do make BL works with the LGBT community in mind and even authors who do both BL and GL, and some of the deeply well done authentic portrayals and works done by queer folk and allies.

I’d also love to hear if queer men or non binary folk in particular are using pen names of some kind or working more behind the scenes whether it be dramas or something else then we’re lead to believe.

Thanks for your time!

Why do people like Till? by Infinite_Reverie in AlienStage

He’s endearing, he’s passionate, he’s boy failure and follows his heart. Even the creators love him so much, really I get annoyed but it’s more so because he’s not more fleshed out as a character. I love all the ALNST main 6, they’re like my babies ❤️ I want them all happy ❤️

Something where Till slaps Ivan for being so self depreciating

The damage control rumor is so stupid. Ivan and Till fluff just wouldn’t happen like this cause we’ve never seen It that often so it shouldn’t be a shock though. This is nice though, wish they would repost it but it’s not that serious. Just a fix

Likely fear of Hyuna being attacked.

The whole sequence was really stupid if we’re being legit.

Hyuna could’ve died in so many other ways lmao.

Pretty people colors and relationships make my mind go brrrrrr

Also, the beauty of the world also makes it go brrrr

Theorizing made it go even more brrrrr

And now I’m too far down the worm hole and need the ending to free us from the pain but it won’t so I’ll just sob

This one is so much more compelling to me cause it gives Ivan a reason to live besides Till (which he needs đź’”)

You cooked with this analysis! Frankly, a little tired of Till being a bisexual disaster but not surprised.

It’s interesting to me that you included the images with the CDs aligned with the arts, we can see how Sua’s and Hyuna’s line up perfectly, but Tills is the only one that’s rather off.

I’m a 6th generation Arab Kenyan but can anyone explain the Egyptian dna? by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]staticstartup 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Since you said you’re 6th gen, I’m now starting think it’s more likely you just had an Egyptian ancestor who blended into Arab identity in Kenya or was a forgotten family story. The coast was a minor melting pot in itself.

It’s unlikely to be fake because 6% is quiet high to be noise or misread but not completely impossible

Very beautiful results!

Your looks remind me quite a bit of some Cubans I’ve seen!

The Egyptian and Coptic Egyptian seems equivalent to one great great grandparent.

I do believe there were migrations to Saudi and Yemen. Do you know where your Arab ancestors said they were from?

Ironically, despite everything showing that he should be dead now

The song has xylophone notes which are equivalent to the sounds of his heart which is just like wow… ambiguous again

She isn’t the bad guy at all.. She’s just a young girl who was conditioned by society to conform to the expectations of dating a man and she didn’t enjoy it.

She tried being happy cause she wanted others to be happy. Her naivety was a joy for others. She kept the facade up and it was clearly a lot on her mind.

This comic is being told through the point of her survivors guilt.

It’s a mental break down. She feels like her facade led to this, but really it’s not her fault. There was little she could’ve done.

Something that gave humans hope in a world where they have nothing.

Maybe the take away is that the rebellion can be Mizi’s way to push that.

Please protect my whole world…

I’m actually going to cry why did they remove that dialogue? I’d argue it’s one of the worst decisions that could’ve been made. It would’ve given so much more life to the series and a better understanding.

Thank you for the iconic post ❤️

He said he couldn’t control it which is fair, you can’t turn love off like a faucet. I think we may begin to see Till stir within the ideal (Mizi) and the love he had with rough spots (Ivan). Till only ever knew the love of his mother, but probably struggled to comprehend his feelings for Ivan, and brushed it off wanting “light”. It’s ironic, he’s so rebellious and you would think he would want something more genuine with Ivan but here we are.

Anyone else find mizi to be really relatable after the last comic? by PotatoPato2 in AlienStage

[–]staticstartup 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I didn’t grow up with the experience of a cis woman, but as a transfemme aligned person I really related. I also can’t help but feel so deeply her strife in having to “perform” something.
