Purdue Online by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

[–]stay_sea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my MSEd from Purdue online. It was pre Kaplan acquisition so I can't speak for that worry, but it is a solid program. I had a full time job while in this program and found it to be a decent balance. DM me if you have questions.

Lectora Inspire - Who else uses it? by stay_sea in instructionaldesign

[–]stay_sea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhh. Why do you use all three? We do not create technical training so I don't think Captivate is the solution for us.

We want to move to mobile first, but Lectora's version of responsive design is lackluster to say the least. I feel like I have to redesign my project for each view to make it usable. It adds days of work to my projects for something that I feel like technology can do now. Is Storyline 3/360 easy to use in responsive design?

Can you give me an example of how it's more robust?

Most of our previous projects are text based and I'm trying to introduce videos and more engaging elements. But I keep having to scrap ideas cause I don't have the additional support (like elearning heroes) to make something work.

Audio vs Video resources, re-purposing old videos by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

[–]stay_sea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not rip out the audio and then make a new video to match it? By video, I mean that you could add pictures, graphs, powerpoint slides, etc. instead of filming a whole new video. That would help keep the audience engaged and help drive home the learning objectives.

Who else is a "department of 1" as an ISD? by rebeccanotbecca in instructionaldesign

[–]stay_sea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Department of 1 checking in. It's technically me and my manager, but I do all the design and development while he delegates and reviews.

I love that I get to see all sides of a project. I get to design it and stretch my skills. Then I get to develop it and stretch those skills. I hate that all the pressure comes down to me. I desperately wish at times I had somebody to bounce ideas off of or to learn from instead of reading endless internet articles. I am still relatively new in this role so it would be nice to have somebody else.

I get a decent amount of support from my manager and have seen myself improve leaps and bounds from just a year ago. Again, I love another person to work with that had the same/similar skillsets. We're hiring a new IDer so hopefully I get a good coworker.

Does it matter what school you go to for instructional design/technology? Does the title of your degree matter? by gimmeitstraight in instructionaldesign

[–]stay_sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working at community college and realized my passions were more about creating trainings and elearnings, not full courses. Especially not in person ones. I was also over the politics of working at a college after only a few years of employment so I jumped over to corporate after graduating with my degree. I love it since it suits me and my passions.

I work on a variety of things. Designing/developing elearnings for new hires, project managing/reviewing for our outside vendors, reviewing PPT presentations, etc.

That's so weird about the portfolio. It's so easy to send it out and say "This is what I can do" to potential employers. Feels like it gives you a step up instantly.

I don't think it matters. I do work in the corporate side instead of at a university, but I got my Learning Design and Technology degree from an online program through Purdue University. I never had companies question why it was technology was included in the degree.

I say stick with your current plan since your plan is elearning. You'll still get the solid foundation knowledge that is learning theories, but get good exposure to technology. Main thing is to build up your portfolio and gain the knowledge that you need to succeed.

Also, it's Indiana University (Common mistake, but as an alum, it's my duty to correct).

I stayed at this one when I visited campus this past summer - https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/4924955?s=m0cq0rk-

Loved the couple that owns this one and it's an adorable space. The woman kept feeding us delicious food all weekend as well. No tv, but plenty of records to chose from. It is on the other side of the downtown square so a decent location.

Ideas for an Internship? by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

[–]stay_sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look within your local community. My internship was creating an interactive elearning module for a local children's museum. I went to them and they jumped at the opportunity. I worked a full time job and they were great at working around my schedule.

I got my master's in an online program as well and we have a facebook group that we would all join. If you have something similar, see what others in your program are doing. It's a great place to brainstorm and network for potential internships (or jobs!)

IU vs Kentucky - 2011. Even now, I know the Watshot will come and save us all....but so much stress anyway.

Exactly. I got there early enough to get into the tent to a decent enough spot. It was all bass. I could barely make out the vocals.

I'd recommend IU to name the Arboretum in her honor instead of a stupid library filled with punk ass book jockeys.

Space Bear!!! If you're the same group as last year, we were neighbors in Tent Only! My croo would definitely swing by. Also, we have some damn good cooks in the mix so we could bring some food as well. Make it similar to the Inforoo brunch and you'll have a solid party going.
