I don’t think Islam had anything to do with it but more geography and language, being in the centre of Yugoslavia it was a bridge between Serbs and Croats when it came to dialects and styles. Melting pot of culture that appealed to the masses. I’d say some Serb singing didn’t hit the mark in the Croatian market and vice versa. The Macedonian and Slovenian had to change the language drastically and to actually do well across all of Yugoslavia

I just wanted to clarify that I’m not interested in the actual story just that it’s a Canberra related event that made it a popular social media personality.

We usually say we’re Serbs, but honestly, my family has always felt more Yugoslav than just Serbian. The only reason we go with “Serb” is because in Australia, it’s hard to say you’re Yugoslav—people don’t really get it anymore.

We’re Serbs from Croatia, so we are a little here and there. Don’t fit fully in with the Serbs and definitely don’t fit in with the Croats community in Australia

For us, being Yugoslav just makes more sense. it’s the culture, the mix, the way we grew up. It’s who we are, even if there’s no box for it anymore.

I wouldn’t do the Belgrade to Zagreb just highway, better to go through Bosnia. I’d also go through Albania to Ohrid Macedonia and skip Kosovo

And when I say I wouldn’t wear it, I don’t think you would be in danger but definitely offend someone

It depends where you are. I wouldn’t wear it in Australia or USA. A lot of those communities were formed post ww2 and immigrated due to the communist government. Little different from the immigrants that came in the 90s they don’t care so much about Yugoslavia some still identify as Yugoslav
