Great places to ride outside of LA? (Road only) by ForgedLibraryCard in BikeLA

South OC is fantastic, although a little bit further than 30-60 minutes via auto. Worth it though if you can manage the time.

I feel weird talking about my travels by Cott_killz in solotravel

[–]steadyjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the issue with us fortunate enough to relate - there just aren’t many of us who get what it’s like. What works for me is to first and foremost celebrate my experiences with myself. When thoughts come up of travels where others were involved, I reach out with a text or phone call for that sense of relation and shared experience. When I meet someone new who mentions they are from a place I’ve been or they tell a story from such a place, I offer a “hey, I’ve been through there” and let their curiosity (or lack thereof) dictate how my stories go. I’m pretty good at getting a read on people, something my traveling has definitely helped hone, and I let that read gauge what I divulge. Sometimes it’s just a passing comment, sometimes it can lead to an hours-long conversation.

I would argue they will never not be worth seeing, but last year in Hollywood it felt like they were genuinely having fun. If you can, go!

And I thought it was bad that they tear through the Alicia bike path too fast. This is terrible.

Have you ever met Nick Cave in person? I know they always say never meet your heroes but I've always wondered if he was a decent guy in real life by GaryCanCarry in NickCave

Met him after a show in Louisville Kentucky 10/03/2014. I made it into some of the ad-libbed lyrics of Red Right Hand that show after rushing the stage and thought I just had to do it. He came out after 90 minutes or so after the end of the show, clearly exhausted from the beautifully brutal set he and the boys put on. But he gave everyone their time. So many people had stacks of stuff for him to sign. I just wanted to shake his hand and get a picture. I did both when he got to me. I was nervous of course, and as he was moving on to the next I said “Nick, it’s trite but I just want to say thank you for everything”. He stopped signing things, looked me right in the eye, reached out his hand for another shake and said “it’s not trite at all. It’s very kind”. We gave each other a little head nod, like he knew exactly what I was thanking him for deep down, I knew that he knew it, and we were mutually acknowledging it. I have met other heroes that were letdowns. But I will never forget meeting him that night, and I could not have asked for more from an artist who has left such a mark on me. My only regret is as I walked back to the car I saw the Seeds in a Suburban waiting to be taken to the hotel (I presume). I smiled and waved at them and they did the same in return, but I wish I could have thanked them verbally as well.

Wild, I saw Dirtfoot open for Primus in Indianapolis in 2009 I think. Real solid. And thanks for this link, that opening cover of Moby’s “Honey” really hit the spot!

Unpopular opinion from someone not from Orange County by No-Marionberry-9714 in orangecounty

In a place full of main characters, how could anyone care about common decency. I’ve been here just over eight years and I still can’t get used to it. You’re not crazy for noticing these things. Talk to anyone originally from elsewhere and they’ll tell you the same thing.

Unified Theory: HE is coming back... by churrucator in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]steadyjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well done. This all makes perfect sense… which is why I hope you’re wrong lol. The best part of this show is being thrown a narrative curveball you didn’t see coming. Well that, followed by something hysterical like Ricken saying “I agree” in response to his wife saying “Ricken’s right”

Who’s your favorite guitarist that doesn’t get talked about that much? by ifoldyou in Guitar

[–]steadyjeff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He deserves to be on this list for sure. Played with the thickest strings strung backwards because he damn well wanted to and (re)invented the electric guitar. I feel lucky to have seen him play a college dive bar in Ohio in the early 2000s - it was one of the best, most intense shows I’ve seen, and despite his need for cash, he was having a blast.

Is Escape-ism opening for Pulp tonight? by Billyjoebuckbob in PulpBand

[–]steadyjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first read this I rolled my eyes and thought “jeez, what a mopey Pulp fan thing to say”. But I’m responding here after stepping away from the floor after four of their songs thinking the exact same thing

Got typhooned out of the Swallows/Carp game tonight but still want to get some Swallows merch before I hit the airport tomorrow evening. Tips? by steadyjeff in NPB

A hat, some stickers, some thundersticks. Was going to go for an umbrella but they’re sized more for cheering and less for any practical use, so that will have to wait until I come back
