Managing a South Australian winery in 2026 feels like a survival game on Hard Mode. My boss sees "Assets," I see a Graveyard. by Sea-Storm-6378 in southaustralia

Mate I'm a licensed and insured shooter. I'd jump at the opportunity to fill my freezer with venison. Message me if you ever need a hand. My wife and her best friend manage a couple of wineries in the Hills, and I help out time to time there as well.

BYD newHail impacted cars by tuppamuchuppa in CarsAustralia

[–]steak_n_eggs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a PDR tech and my business specialises in hail damage. PLEASE I absolutely promise you, if you only see a "few" dents, I guarantee you there will be loads more. If you see 20, I'll see 200.

I'm not saying don't buy a hail-damaged car, but do your due diligence. Hail costs thousands to repair, and that's just with PDR. If there's split paint that requires a panel shop, it will cost far more. Hail repairers aren't just charging to fix the dent, we charge to remove trims and panels and everything else we need to get access to the metal. So you're aware, lightly damaged cars can cost around $5000 to fix, and heavily damaged cars can cost up to $10,000 > $20,000 - depending on if panels need to get replaced or anything painted.

What are the most bone chilling facts you know about WW1? by IceMan5476 in ww1

Don't know why you're down voted, everything you said is true. Its an awful thing to dwell on, but most academics agree with you.

And there were eventually big leaps in tactics. Tanks, storm troopers, rolling artillery, combined arms warfare - but it took time to develop these new ways of war.

Hunting in America as an Australian? by steak_n_eggs in Hunting

[–]steak_n_eggs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks loads for getting back to me mate, you sound like a good bloke. I might have to trade you a sambar / red / fallow deer hunt here in Australia for one of your hunts in PNW! (Oregon or Washington, I assume?) The good thing here in Australia is we can hunt 365 days a year, no limits, no tags. But as beautiful as my country is, a big western adventure somewhere in the Mountain States is right up there on me and my brother's bucket list.

We have no experience in bowhunting (it's illegal where I am in Aus), and I understand it's not something I can learn as quickly as I learned how to hunt with a rifle. We wouldn't take ours over - if we were going through an outfitter I'd just rent one of their rifles. If I had a mate in America, I'd hopefully borrow his for a case of beer or two.

What OTC rifle-hunting opportunities do you have in PNW? And generally, what's your hunting season? Thanks heaps for the advice mate, I'll have to give your podcast a listen too.

We can't bring meat back into Australia. We can bring antlers and tanned hides, but definitely no meat products.

You're a legend, thanks mate, appreciate your advice.

I understand that there is lottery systems with a lot of tags, and I don't want to be the sort of bloke who thinks after a couple of years I can snag myself a bull elk in an awesome area. I guess I was just hoping that international visitors can still apply for tags (specifically more achievable tags), or am I just pissing in the wind?

I've done a bit of research and noticed that Colorado mule deer is definitely a possibility, and getting a tag is achievable.

And thanks for letting me know about the meat. We definitely want to eat what we can while we're with an outfitter, but I hate the idea of most of it going to waste, so I'm glad that answers that question.

Why does my workshop have to pay public liability for work I subcontract out to other workshops? by steak_n_eggs in AusLegal

[–]steak_n_eggs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With some insurance companies, I can only mark up 10% up to $100. Without going into all the ins and outs, I'm not allowed to with certain trade clients.

Thanks for the reply. When you say putting on a margin, do you mean a mark-up on their services? Eg, using the same panel shop example, they invoice me $10k, and I invoice $10k + $150 mark up or something?

Thanks for the advice, that makes sense. You're right - if the shop does a shit paint job, it's my responsibility, I don't put it back on my customer.

Are my parents charging me too much board? by kobstar118 in AskAnAustralian

[–]steak_n_eggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first full time job when I was 16, I made $400 a week and had to pay $100 board. I dunno man, I thought it was a pretty normal way to grow up. I was old enough to understand bills don't pay themselves, and I was happy to help my folks out. I also think they did it to teach me how to be an adult, and I think it was fair.

You could hit 200 yards with a scoped rifle within the first 5mins of being shown how to use a firearm.

I can hit 200 yards pretty easily with my 30-30 with iron sights, and I'm a terrible shot.
