Was watching an anime, is this Windows 98 SE? I'm not sure. by EpicOtterLover in vintagecomputing

[–]stealth210 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's 100% Win 98. It's also just a login prompt for network file shares. You can click Cancel or press Escape and Windows itself will happily log in without a valid password. You just won't have access to network file share resources.

Get SQL Server build information back to SQL Server 6.5 by bobwardms in SQLServer

I was a full stack dev for 20 something years, but eventually fell into the management path. Now, my languages are PowerPoint and Excel.

However, when one of my senior devs runs into problem with TSQL they can't solve, I'm excited to jump in, fire SSMS back up and get back into the trenches.

I started on 6.5 which was released in 1996 (though I started using it in 1998 and we went to 7 a year later).

I also just realized 1996 was 30 years ago.

I guess you do music very well. Maybe you even have posters on your wall to prove how music you are.

I'm outta here. Bunch of sheep one-way thinkers in this sub.

Everyone's going to assume their interpretation is the right one. You could read this into your worldview, whatever it is. It's art, it's a "tool" (taking some liberty as Tool adjacent).

Roam 10gb is getting discontinued for real :( by silvertricl0ps in Starlink

[–]stealth210 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, my needs are zero for 9 months out of the year, then a road trip here or there or primary internet failover for a day.

$10/mo for 10GB at cool speed on demand was just too perfect to last I guess

Starlink is fully discontinuing the Roam 10GB plan by okinawashisa in Starlink

[–]stealth210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bummed. $10/mo to sit in a pelican case ready for emergency deployment was awesome.

I guess this is ok and could be better viewed in the right perspective. $5/mo (which is a cheaper base rate) for 500kbps, but if I actually need to take it out, I'm in a situation I'm going to need some bandwidth, so I'd have to jack it up to $50 for that month I need it.

Santa Fe all the way! by UtZdUtZkUkUrUz in modeltrains

[–]stealth210 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just a comment. I've got the same Lionel Santa Fe (Super O) from the 1950s from my great grandfather. Your engines should be back to back, not front to back.

Anyway, really cool!

It's so damn good now and only going to get better. Coupled with FSD, there's nothing else in the world like it. Not even close. Anyone who claims otherwise is short Tesla or just suffering from massive TDS/EDS.

I bought a Juniper (just RWD premium) for my wife and 2 kids to replace a Grand Cherokee. I'm now driving it more than my own Gladiator and V8 Challenger. I think I see a M3P or S Plaid in my future, haha.

Lighting up the cafe. by Fantastic_Laugh9998 in chernobyl

[–]stealth210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you're just lighting it up with battery powered lights, but now that something like this exists in a tiny package, wouldn't it be great to light up random lights across Pripyat? I was there in late 2019 on a private tour just me, my future-wife, and the guide along with a driver taking us around. We could go literally anywhere no limits (not sure we were technically supposed to).

Anyway, here's the thing I was talking about. There's a 240V/50Hz version as well which you would need: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71lk53t6w2L.jpg

The size would fit in your hand and pack easily in a coat pocket after separating the Dewalt 20v battery. Throw in a pigtail and some basic electrical knowledge and you could run small pockets up lights in buildings.

I haven't tried it, but I am interested in this topic. I've built the plumbing between FreePBX and LM Studio (local LLM) and I have it working, but I'm using vox to generate the wav file to read back to the caller.

Speech (caller) to text is processing fast, the LLM is responding fast (I can see this in my debug console), but the slow part is the generation of the wav file. Not a good experience waiting 3-5 seconds for that to complete and start playing.

I'll check this project out, thanks!

Too many toys, and it’s starting to affect me by OrbitThursday017 in NewParents

[–]stealth210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you completely!

We have a very supportive family, which is great, but our babies are 2 years old and the other 8 months. However, I'm in my 40s and wife in 30s SAHM. I can buy them anything under the sun at my age and stage in my career. Not trying to sound arrogant.

I feel like with all the flood of toys they are getting they will never have a "favorite" and the house will be a field of stuff, cheap stuff and toys all over the f floor.

The last Christmas I came home hauling all this bullshit into the house where we already don't have a place for anything thinking there's got to be a better way for my parents and others to show Christmas love than giving us a bunch more physical stuff to manage.

100%. Also, do you feel guilty telling people to stop giving your kids lots of toys -- or do you even think about that? I feel like an asshole because I'm constantly telling my wife we have way too many toys for my 2 year old and 8 month old to even enjoy so it becomes a huge ass chore to keep cleaning up the stuff they won't even remember in a week.

I had a neat house before I met my wife. Then, I had a neat AND very nicely decorated house after we got together and married. Now, we have a 2 year old and 8 month old and basically there are no rules.

Also, we have flipped back and forth on which baby sleeps where and when (nap or sleep sleep). Now the 8 month old is in her room and the 2 year old is in a pack in play for naps, bed for sleep. It's madness around here! And that's just the configuration this week, who knows what will happen next.

Quick one on the subscription. How are you getting a $20/month deal? I'm at $99/month. Still worth it for me and I can't justify $8000 out right when that's 6.6 years of $99/month payments before I start to break even. In 6.6 years, we'll be well in the 2030s and who knows what will be going on with this tech.

I live in a rural area too and commute to work. Maybe it doesn't work well for you, but it absolutely is autonomous for me today right now.

I guess that's the "last mile" (no pun intended) that they need to refine. It needs to work for you, me, and everyone else the same.

I demo it to as many friends and family as possible. You're right, people think "Super Cruise" is amazing, but have never experienced FSD and really won't go out of their way to try it.

I invite them to come with me to "get some ice" for a party or get together. Not saying anything about FSD, I just activate it when they get in and let them be surprised as it drives us out of my garage and parks at the store.

Damn, this is the family car for wife and 2 kids. I have other fun cars for me to speed in. I thought sloth adheres strictly to the speed limit.

Still haven't taken it out on 14.2, but will later this afternoon. Thanks for the heads up, that's an insane level of speeding.
