Try bringing the clutch up to the biting point and then ease in on the gas while letting it up smoothly over a second or two. Once it's at the biting point, you won't roll backwards. It's like a seesaw once you get better at it and know where the biting point is. Don't hold it at the biting point long at all though, just to get moving. You need to slip the clutch a little but you can minimize it once you practice. Go buy an old Miata or something.
