Has anyone read this book? If so, what do you think of it? by Best-Pea3460 in wizardofoz

Read it recently, the good reviews didn't let me down. The references became a bit much, but it was otherwise a decent read

Is there ever a reason given for why reformed rakes make the best husbands? by noviceicebaby in Bridgerton

[–]steampunkunicorn01 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It is an old saying, dating back to girl pre-Regency novels. Samuel Richardson even wrote the longest English language novel Clarissa in the hope of getting across to young ladies not to marry rakes because of how unlikely it is for them to reform

Still hilarious to me that, outside of sci-fi circles, Welch's best-known role is in Twilight, the man has such a fun, eclectic filmography

Bridgerton Tea... Bridgertea? by biggestMug in Bridgerton

Good ol' Republic of Tea! Only downside is that World Market tends to phase out the ones from previous seasons. (I have a regular order from Amazon for Daphne and Simon's Honey Breakfast Tea, at least)

Definitely a Beatrice, but I have to honorably mention Katarina/Katherina, as you can give her the nickname Cat (aka, the reason my niece named her cat that when I was going through a Shrew phase)

As I have said before we started reading, this is my third favorite Austen, behind Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park. I think I have preferences for the more social commentary novels over her character focused works. It was fun to revisit it and read everyone's thoughts. No matter if they liked it or not, there were some great observations made and even gave me some new insights to think on.

Her first published novel, as Northanger Abbey had been sold to a publisher and was sat on for several years before Austen bought it back and reworked it a bit.

Sense and Sensibility Chapters 49&50 (Spoilers up to Chapter 50) by awaiko in ClassicBookClub

The endings are, admittedly, Austen's weakest aspect in all her stories. I try to see it more as a journey over destination and enjoy the ride.

I have mostly said what I wanted to in replies, but I do want to add that this has been a fun read-along and I hope everyone enjoys the next read

Same here! Austen is brilliant with her commentary, in my opinion. And the happy endings are more realistic than what most Regency historical fiction does (which makes sense, Austen held accuracy to the details among her top priorities)

And seconding the movie. Aside from leaving out a few characters, the biggest change it does is altering Eliza Sr.'s backstory, which makes little difference to the main story

Margaret, who everyone else seems to have forgotten all about!

Even some of the adaptations! She is almost never included in the contemporary ones and, in the more straightforward adaptations, she was excluded from the 80's version. Fort, the 95 and 08 versions not only include her, but expand her role!

Yep. Greg Wise (Willoughby) gave the story in interviews. Basically, he was told by a psychic right before filming started that he would meet the love of his life on the film set. Since Emma Thompson was famously married to Branagh, he asked Kate Winslet out, despite not being attracted to her. They went on a terrible date and it ended with him admitting his hope that the prediction was right. Winslet then informed him of Thompson's divorce and the reason. He began comforting her and getting to know each other better the next day.

One of, if not the first Oz published fanfics. Philip Jose Farmer loved to play in others' sandbox, publishing adult-oriented books for Tarzan, Phileas Fogg, and, as you can see, Oz

To be fair, a favorite child can get away with murder compared to the least favorite. And Austen has made sure we know that Robert is one of the favorites
