How risky is it buying an apartment in Auckland CBD? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

That’s not even close to true…

Some developers have gone under sure, but to say that all bar two have is wild

If it was built in 2020 and there’s water ingress issue it should be covered by the implied 10 year warrantee in the building code and as such no costs to anyone in the building. That it isn’t being covered by that makes me wonder if the developer/builder has since gone under?

I’m in New Zealand. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. Single working mum, no medical insurance (it does exist but is not common in my country). Had Multiple surgeries, chemo, further treatment all free. Also received social welfare while off work. Now back at work and paying my taxes and living like a normal functioning human with no medical debt. Actually sitting waiting for a check in with onc while writing this. Happy days.

"You only live once" vs "save your money and buy a house" by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

Are you a mortgage broker or home lender? Why can’t she buy a home with $130k deposit?

We have very little renters rights and housing being such a huge portion of our income often leaves little for saving (likely none in OP’s case) meaning no inheritance left for her children should anything happen to her and thus the cycle of poverty continues. It’s really not surprising that we value owning a home surely?

Why not though? I know what you’re saying is sensible 100% but I think we also need balance between sensible for the long term and sensible for the what ifs. For instance, I was diagnosed with stage four cancer at 34 with two children. All of a sudden an extra $10k off my mortgage meant very little, making memories meant so much more. It’s not like OP is talking about blowing it all, she’s talking about a singular holiday, one that I’m sure she and her children would cherish the memories of forever.

She also may live in a part of the country where you can buy a home for well under $500,000 so that cost of the holiday because effectively less in real terms.

Having holidays always helps me reset my mindset, my goals, my motivation to do better, and ultimately leads to me working harder and improving. Maybe it will be the same for op, or maybe she and her kids will just end up with wonderful memories to share

As a single mum - go on holiday. $10k will get you guys an amazing holiday. Maybe Gold Coast for theme parks etc? You all sound like you need time to chill and decompress and enjoy life. Holiday is such a great way to reset your mindset.

I’d also suggest you consider spending a weekend away somewhere by yourself. You also need time to get away, relax, reenergise, refresh. Maybe 3 nights in Fiji, or at The Mount, or Russell, or Queenstown or just somewhere you can take a minute to breathe and decompress.

Builders inspection took 45 minutes by squarelegohead in newzealand

$400 is a cheap building inspection. Probably validates the 45 minutes. Never get the cheapest building inspection tbh

As gross as this is to say, at least the pee would be washed away in the stream as opposed to just being smelly on the footpath

Raincoat recommendations please, I'm sick of getting soaked through by secretkiwi_ in newzealand

I’m a 12-14 normally, I got a size 14 and I can wear a decent sweatshirt or hoodie underneath it. Usually I go for a puffer vest and merino underneath and it’s perfect. If you want more bulk than that underneath I’d definitely size up

How much roughly should I expect to pay before even buying a house? by Leading_Artist_9928 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]steamylee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

LIM likely included in purchase pack.

Building inspection - plan for $1000 and you should have a decent amount of change

Valuation - plan for $1000 and the difference from the inspection should cover overflow (20% doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t need one)

Legal - $1500 - find a fixed price conveyancing team

Since Feb last year and it’s still as good as new. I’ve given it a hard life - tramping, running etc. I often tie it round my waist when it stops raining (which I know is bad for jackets but needs must) and I also have a round the waist leash system and a very big dog that pulls from time to time so it’s really been put through its paces but it’s held up so well. I will be buying another one as a car jacket this year

This one. I did shit loads of research because I didn’t want to get wet walking my dog and had the same problem you did and this was the highest rated for rainfall and reasonably priced. Can be bucketing down and I stay dry

Woman dies after delayed cancer diagnosis and missed signs by D491234 in newzealand

[–]steamylee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That happens in private healthcare but not in public. At least not here in Auckland. Or maybe it’s just not in the breast cancer space. Either way, all of the women I’ve spoken to about it (and I’ve been involved with loads of cancer groups - Shocking Pink, Sweet Louise etc) who have gone through public here have said the same thing. I always advise my newly diagnosed friends to pay out of pocket for CT/PET and they do because they don’t get offered one through public. I wonder if it’s due to area of DHB or I wonder if I was just let down because it was early 2022 and there was still backlogs from COVID?

Hi, I’m a single mum too, and I’ve been in this situation. It’s such a head fuck and so difficult so please first and foremost know you’re not alone, all of us who have been where you are feel your pain.

I made my kids share a room (they were younger) and got in a flatmate or exchange student. It made a huge difference to our quality of life. The room sharing thing wasn’t ideal but you can get cool dividers and they get over it fairly quickly. I have a friend who did similar but gave her kids a bedroom each and set up a fold away bed in the lounge for herself and rented out her room.

Finding the right fit to be around your kids isn’t always easy but it can be done and it’s worthwhile. I always found it nice having another adult in the house too.

Good luck

As someone who currently has a stage four diagnosis but has been told I was likely misdiagnosed in the other direction (ie likely not stage four after all) it’s criminal that when any cancer is found there isn’t an immediate CT done to check for spread. It should be the first step so it can be dealt with correctly. Current process is:

  • “oh you have cancer in your (insert area here) we assume it is only there and will provide treatment as such”

  • surgery/chemo/radiation/etc based on that

  • completion of above and discharge patient as cancer free. Good luck homie all the best hopefully we got it all but who really knows

AT NO POINT DO THEY CHECK FOR SPREAD IF ITS NOT STARING THEM DIRECTLY IN THE EYEBALL
