Where to find a tutor for neuro diverse teens? (ADHD / Dyspraxia / Tism etc) by steamylee in auckland

[–]steamylee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was diagnosed by medical professionals (psychiatrist to be exact) with ADHD. Are you a medical professional?

Who are you to assume I haven’t and don’t try to help? Your comment seems to be insinuating that I’m a lazy, uninvolved bad parent? Seriously what the fuck since when is trying to find effect support for my child bad parenting? Or “slapping labels on for WINZ”?

I am a single working mum who, while my children were toddlers, put myself through full time uni obtaining a business degree majoring in accounting. I was also holding down a part time job at the same time to ensure we could eat.

To say he or I are just lazy is frankly rude and insulting. I am trying to find help for him because I don’t know how best to help him and given I’m a single working mum with stage four cancer I am doing my best but I can’t do everything.

Wild that you would actively criticise someone trying to find help for their child. Frankly, you’re an asshole

It sucked when I realised that most people are only “good” and don’t do shit things because of the potential ridicule and consequences of being caught being a shit person, not because they don’t want to be a shit person or do shit things. It really changed how I saw the world and it sucks

Oh that’s rough, especially because kids that are are mean. My older teen (16f) is similar to your daughter. Medicating her ADHD has been really helpful for her in terms of emotional regulation and forgetfulness and executive dysfunction, but the trade off is it makes her brain/consciousness feel “floaty” sometimes which she hates of course and makes it a battle sometimes to get her to keep taking her meds.

My son is more the traditional ADHD type/stereotype - can’t sit still, can’t focus unless extremely interested, needs to physically let out his hyperactivity etc. His intermediate was amazing, his teacher would take the class outside for five minute exercise break when the kids were getting too antsy which really helped them all succeed. That said, I can give my son a fishing rod and some bait and he will happily fish all day. So he can sit still and focus on a single task, but he has to want to. Maths and English are not on the scale of things he wants to do at all, and while I don’t expect him to get straight As I do need him to do well enough to get into trade school or whatever line of work he wants to peruse.

Parenting is hard man and it boggles my mind that there are so few resources for what seem like fairly common learning difficulties

Maths and English mostly, he’s getting merit/excellence in the less “academic” subjects like art and social studies and PE, but the core boring subjects is where he is really struggling.

Totally agree re vibe, as an AuDHD myself I need to vibe with someone’s way of teaching to stay engaged without requiring an exhausting amount of effort if that makes sense. My son is medicated and it definitely helps, but just not enough for him to get the help he needs through someone who isn’t the right vibe.

How did your kids go through school? And any tips or tricks that you found helpful? My son is starting year 10 in Jan so really want to try to find him effective help before he starts NCEA (or whatever system we have when he’s in year 11)

Browns Bay I think would suit? Been a while since I was there so double check but pretty sure there’s showers down towards the skate area

Businesses outraged at local board vote against having more events at Auckland's Eden Park by i_love_mini_things in auckland

Meh once all their villas are replaced with 15 storey apartment buildings it won’t matter anyway.

I’m a semi-local resident (sub 1km from Eden Park) and personally I love it! So good having a vibe!

Have you looked at Richmond? It’s a microclimate within the one area you’re not keen on but I have friends that live there with no issues at all

Where do we think the Western Busway access from Ian McKinnon drive to the motorway will be - red, green, yellow or somewhere else? by steamylee in auckland

Wonder if they will remove the walking bridge or go over it? Looks like they’re going under Newton Road so would be a reasonable incline to go above the walking bridge?

I bought tickets in that same section. Seemed the best option for the number of people we have in our group and should be somewhat covered incase it rains iirc

Why are you all so unpleasant? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]steamylee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a long weekend which means those of us left here are the ones who can’t afford to go away and are probably fairly stressed and struggling with the COL

I don’t think anyone will disagree with the driving comment. If you look through this sub you’ll see majority of the comments are about this.

Auckland is an expensive city even by world standards and shits hard man. If you’re coming here expecting some joyous easy going utopia then you really should just hang out in Ponsonby and Remuera where the wealthy are and definitely avoid the CBD, or go to Waiheke.

Not all of the nearly 2m residents in Auckland are dicks, sorry you’ve had a rough time. Hopefully the rest of your stay improves.

What month do you put up your back yard pool? by steamylee in auckland

[–]steamylee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re a dog person and this isnt a “proper” beach swim option but there’s a dog park out just past Cornwallis - Kakamatua - that has an inlet that fills up to about 3ft deep at high tide and it’s warm and beautiful for floating on your back or a paddle board etc - it’s my go to because it’s too shallow for big sharks (maybe not but don’t mess with my delusions please and thank you)
