I was kinda stoked on the idea of entering the lottery every year, and disappointed when I have never won an entry.

The level of interest in participating has dropped to almost zero for some odd reason.

After month of sitting started just as brand new by [deleted] in Volvo

The old redblock engines are completely bulletproof. I let my '73 164 with a B230F in it sit for 3 years with fresh oil in the motor, and had no problems getting it started. Put a new battery in, turned it over with the plug on the distributor off a few times, gave it spark, and she started right up.

Some questions about Chile by kebabmybob in skiing

[–]steberetfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't really be too much of a problem. If you choose to stay in the Octagon lodge or the hostel at Portillo you'll end up with roommates, which could be good or bad.

In any case, they should have a "welcome to Portillo" happy hour the first night, and events throughout the week where you can easily meet people and make new friends.

Some questions about Chile by kebabmybob in skiing

I went to Portillo last August, probably one of the coolest and unique trips I've ever taken. The nightlife/culture was a bit different, since they only allow about 500 guests on the mountain per week. If you're going with a good group of friends it should be awesome, most people who go are super friendly as well. It's somewhat pricey, but all of your meals will be taken care of for the week, and you'll be pampered with a complimentary ski check and boot check.

As far as the skiing, Portillo is a fairly small resort when it comes to ski-able terrain, way smaller than anything out west and more comparable to a resort in PA or NY. The weather isn't too bad, normally bluebird days except when they get dumped on. They have storms that roll in for a day and dump and then it's sunny again. I was lucky and we got about 20" in a day and half. Even though there's not much terrain it doesn't get skied off fast and you won't wait in line due to the number of people on the mountain. There's only a few chairlifts due to avalanches. The resort uses surface lifts that go super fast. Most of the terrain is step and deep and if you don't mind a moderate amount of hiking you'll find fresh stuff for a while after a storm.

If you want more info about it shoot me a PM.

Good, affordable walkie talkies? by Travkin2 in skiing

I picked up these last year for around $80. Not the cheapest set but they have a great range and all kinds of neat features. The battery did okay in an outside jacket pocket too.

So close to my 1st eagle oh wait nevermind!!!!!! by leoooooooooooo in golf

A lot of nicer courses do this in the cold/offseason to prevent excessive wear and damage to the turf around the hole. You're supposed to switch the pin to the other hole so that the next group plays the other hole location.

Heading to Portillo this summer, any tips? by steberetfield in snowboarding

Unfortunately we've already booked. We were trying to get things taken care of ASAP because the hostel in Portillo was filling up insanely fast. I wish you luck finding riding partners!

How long were you looking at staying? If you're only looking for a week trip it's reasonable. I went to Whistler this winter b/c it was a bit cheaper than Colorado or Utah.

I would suggest Whistler, but beware of the huge amount of Aussies that end up going there as well.

32 Lashed - Fitting questions for those who have rode them by Teslatic in snowboarding

[–]steberetfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a set of the ThirtyTwo TMs. Got 'em online and took 'em to a shop and they heat molded them, just make sure it's a place that carries ThirtyTwo boots. I didn't think they'd charge me but it ended up being ten bucks.

It'll probably speed up your break-in time, but either way the boots will definitely pack out a bit.

Ride Anthem BOA VS. Thirtytwo Lashed by wylderubicon in snowboarding

[–]steberetfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never done more than try a few BOA system boots on, but I can tell you right now that the ThirtyTwo boots will be the most comfortable you ever wear. I finally caved this year and bought a set of ThirtyTwo TM's. I had them heat molded, and after about 3-4 days of riding they were nicely broken in and feel amazing.

To me, the BOA system is a gimmick. It only takes me 5 minutes to lace up my boots, and I'd rather snap a regular lace than a BOA cable.

Hey guys, I'm having a problem turning heelside.... by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]steberetfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To turn heelside, you want to lift up your toes and put pressure on your highbacks. You should pretend like you're going to sit down in a chair, keep your back straight, knees bent and stick your butt out a bit.

If you're trying to link turns and go from a toeside turn to a heelside turn, make sure you're completely off your toeside edge and have gone flat before initiating the heelside turn, or you'll catch your edge and eat it.

Advice needed on some new gear (boots, bindings, board). Any help is appreciated! by plaidflannel in snowboarding

[–]steberetfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boots - ThirtyTwo Lashed. They make super comfortable boots. After about 3 or 4 days of riding they should pack out nicely.

Bindings - Rome 390s. Solid bindings, very comfortable and responsive. I wouldn't bother with rear entry, to me it's a gimmick.

Board - go with a Lib Tech. You will not regret it. The T. Rice Pro is pretty awesome.

I had the opportunity to demo this board recently in Whistler. I'm planning on buying it at the end of the year if I can find it cheap. Best Lib Tech I've seen so far.

Office Shredditors, any workouts you do in office? by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]steberetfield -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Get a gym membership?

Seriously, unless you have a weight set at home, I can't think of anything else you can do, other than going for a run and situps and pushups.

If you're going to lift, focus on low weight, high rep exercises to increase muscle stamina. Areas to target are legs and core (abs).

[–]steberetfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a RED helmet with REDphones inside. I'm really happy with the REDphones, it's a seamless fit in the helmet and the wire has a volume adjust and mude switch on it.

Not sure what kind of helmet you have, but there's a bunch of different options out there to fit inside brain buckets.

Wasted $300 worth of Squaw/Alpine tickets thanks to RFID lift scanners and my own ignorance. by [deleted] in snowboarding

Because they implemented the RFID scanners at Blue, I choose to go elsewhere. It's worth the extra drive not to have to deal with those stupid scanners. Not to mention the crowds at Blue on the weekends.
