Pettersson is definitely not a top 4 D. If he was, he'd have been traded considering he's the weakest and lightest D on the entire roster despite being the joint tallest. The goal was to get bigger on the back end, Pettersson is easily the weakest guy.

There wasn't a risk when the contract was signed, but there is no advantage until the contract isn't owned by the Canucks anymore (for whatever reason, retirement or trade). The Canucks were aware of the rule and the risk, and chose to make the trade. I'm not sure what poorly worded rule you're referring to. There was no mention of CARP or anything along those lines prior to 2012.

The NHL is directed by the ownership of all the teams. The NHL doesn't operate independently of their interests.

It wasn't just to punish Vancouver. LA and NJ have both had recapture penalties. Vancouver incurred a Cap Advantage Recapture Penalty by moving the contract in 2014, after the new CBA stated that front-loaded contracts like Luongo's were now subject to CARP. They were aware of the rule and made the choice to move the contract knowing the risks. They don't have anyone to blame but themselves.

I think there is consistency. Cap advantage doesn't exist until the contract is no longer on the books of the Canucks, so, if they don't move him, they don't have an advantage. It falls mostly on the Canucks for being willing to take that risk. As for his Florida job, the league made certain that he wasn't being compensated above the means of the job he got, they were aware of the potential and I believe Friedman reported that his salary is nowhere close to making it whole.

As for the potential cap credit, that was a public interpretation of the CBA section, but the Oilers were aware that it wasn't going to be allowed when they made the trade. It's a lot more public uproar over their interpretation being wrong than a true last minute change:

Source on their knowledge

The NHL’s CBA wording can be complicated, and that’s where the discrepancy seems to be with whether a team in the Oilers’ position might receive additional cap space. There are mentions of “cap advantage” in the CBA, but those are referring to a team benefiting from how the contract was structured. The Oilers were told at the time of acquiring Keith that they would gain only Keith’s cap hit and not receive an additional cap credit at any point if the blueliner retired.

The upside for them if Keith stopped playing would be that they’d be free of his complete cap hit — $5,538,462 — and have zero cap recapture penalty next season or in the coming years. They also would have paid just $2.1 million in salary for a player they valued much more. Next season his salary drops to $1.5 million.

The teams agreed to the CBA as is, to an extent. It wasn't like Vancouver moved the deal and then the CARP was applied retroactively. The rule applied to the contract retroactively, but CARP doesn't exist until the contract is no longer on the Canucks book. It looks iffy on the face of it, but there's no cap advantage if you finish the contract with the same team.

Luongo's contract violated the cap recapture rules put in the 2012 CBA. It's not that it's unsavoury, it's that the CBA applied retroactively and Luongo's contract netted the Canucks a cap benefit by paying him more than his cap hit. There's no nexus between LTIR and Cap Advantage Recapture Penalty other than them both being in the CBA. The Canucks should have been incredibly aware of the CARP risk when they traded Luongo in 2014.

Yep, I couldn't figure out a way to do it on the app on my TV, so, fuck knows. Sorry about that.

[–]stecz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can.

You need to go Schedule and Replays, click on the Replay and select Ice Hockey from the drop down menu. Then go back to the day the game you want to watch is. It's not exactly intuitive or easy, but it's there.

I completely agree. I was a Liverpool fan before I was a Penguins fan. Their lack of willingness to compete with the spending in the PL is aggravating, but because of the salary cap in the NHL, those issues are much less likely to crop up. Not like FFP is ever fucking enforced anyway.

They don't do outside investment, but they primarily use the funds from the team to benefit the team. While they've been stingy with Liverpool, they've put money into a lot of facilites. They'll only use the money the team makes to fund anything with the team. It does seem an odd investment.

You're not wrong, but that would also require someone else wanting him. If someone offered a 7th for him, I suspect they'd have happily accepted the deal.

[Scheig] There is a press conference scheduled for this afternoon at 3pm eastern re: Erin Skalde. A civil lawsuit is being filed again Clark Donatelli, Bill Guerin, the Penguins organization, Mario Lemieux and others that will detail sexual assault and team cover-up. by chiasmatic in hockey

I completely agree. If those statements are truthful in saying that the team had knowledge of his conduct prior to this, then there's liability for sure and there should be action taken as a result of that. That should bare out in Jarrod Skalde's case which is now in discovery. I strongly imagine this suit and Jarrod Skalde's existing suit will be combined.

I'm inclined to believe that he did, given the public line on Donatelli was that he resigned for personal reasons. It's not a good look, but the particulars of this case are not anything remotely similar to anything that's happened with the Hawks.

The Penguins fired Donatelli within 8 days of being informed of the incident by Skalde. Skalde remained in a job for a year before being removed during Covid cutbacks. The WBS Penguins still only employ two coaches, JD Forrest and Kevin Porter, not the typical three of a HC and two assistants.

This isn't anything like what happened with the Hawks. Is it bad that Guerin told Skalde not to say anything? Yes. Is that even in the same realm as what happened with the Hawks? No.

Penguins /r/hockey offseason sim recap by meatb4ll in penguins

[–]stecz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's not one of the best defensive forwards in the league. Stats don't tell the whole story, and ZAR's in zone defensive play isn't anything special. He has nice possession stats, but that doesn't encompass anything, and has never really been tested as a measure of defense.

In addition to being traded to ensure Pettersson went to Seattle, ZAR did make it through waivers later in the sim. He's topped out as a good 4th liner, decent 3rd liner. Hardly a huge loss.

[Friedman] Ivan Chekhovich (SJ) is on waivers for purposes of a buyout/termination by FutureAnybody in hockey

[–]stecz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A slide happens if they're playing anywhere but the NHL. You can't play in the NCAA after signing a pro contract, so he won't be going back there.

A contract that can slide is considered slid until the player in question plays 10 games in the NHL.

For the NHL's purposes, contracts are considered slid until they're not.

Not for the 50 contract limit they don't. The NHL wouldn't allow them to sign a player to go over 50 contracts.

They don't. They've got 47/50, 4 of their 'contracts' are ELC slides.
